Ride along as we reposition a Piper Saratoga. This is a short flight in IMC so it is very busy. Basically as soon as we take off, we are on the approach to the neighboring airport. It was 1,300 overcast at the departure airport which equates to about 900 overcast at the arrival airport because of the elevation change. KSUZ-KORK RNAV Runway 5.

That was exciting. I've told myself for years, if you are in ifr conditions, just remain calm, trust the instruments, remain calm. Just like you did.

The problem I have with IMC where I live is there isn’t enough of it. Out in the Midwest there are just two flavors. Thunderstorms in spring and summer or Icing Conditions in fall and winter! By the way, great video. They are suggested this was an Arnab approach which meant there is no glide slope. It is just vertical guidance, even though it uses the glideslope indicator.

It can be tricky. I also had that issue. Until I started flying airplanes that were certified for icing, I was pretty limited

I used to fly a Saratoga SP - flew for many years - a great airplane - stable and roomy - took it to Canada several times. I enjoyed your video.

Yes, that is what I liked most about it - very roomy. I flew other faster planes but decided to settle on the Saratoga - so comfortable. It had two alternators and weather radar, which was good for instrument flying here in the northeast.

Great content Ryan, keep them coming. I think a change of the camera to behind you looking at the panel would be a better view, even though you are a good looking rooster . :)

I can't, help to notice, all the racket that engine is making. It doesnt sound normal. I certainly wouldn't be flying that plane, in the IMC conditions, or VFR, for that matter.

The guy's suggestion for maybe adding one or two other camera angles so the "uncut" video was not just a basic 'looking at you droning along in full cloud coverage on auto pilot'. I actually dozed off at one point.

Nice ride. Totally Agree: single-pilot in IMC - and - personal minimums well above the published minimums ... I'll take all the automated assistance that I can get. Further, I won't do IFR - at night - in IMC without a copilot, either. Cheers, Chuck (NE Florida) +)

Curious why you didn't continue to hold hands with approach when IMC?

I think you are asking about why they handed me off while on the approach. If that’s not what you mean, then let me know and I’ll try to answer it better. Anyways, North Little Rock airport is an uncontrolled airport (no control tower). Pilots simply broadcast their position and intentions on a frequency for other pilots to hear. You start out with approach control, and at a certain point on the approach they “hand you off” to the other frequency with the instructions to “cancel IFR in the air on this frequency or on the ground with flight service” or something similar. At this point I switched over and began broadcasting my intentions on the local frequency. Once we are clear of the clouds and in visual conditions, you can cancel IFR at any time. Until you cancel/close your IFR flight plan, no other aircraft can land or take off from that airport. Hence why I switched back to approach and canceled as soon as we were clear of the clouds. It is a courtesy to other pilots to prevent them having to hold in the air, or sit on the ground waiting for you.

The ceilings seemed high enough for pattern VFR work, usually they ask you to monitor their frequency in case they need to alert of traffic right before you break out ie Class G doesn't require radio comms so you wouldn't know coming out of the clouds if someone is on final or base to final without the help of radar services. I know every center does things differently.

I see what you are saying now. The airport I flew in to sits a little higher than the departure airport, and the clouds were a little bit lower out that way. It was 900’ ceilings at the arrival airport, so it was IFR. VFR traffic could not fly. About halfway down the approach, you can hear them briefly cancel my approach clearance and then say disregard. This was for an airplane departing the arrival airport that they were able to get out before I was too far down the approach.

Odd question but how tall are you? Considering getting a Saratoga but I've never been in one so not sure how much headroom they have. Thanks!

I am 6'3". The seat is adjustable through a small range up and down. I still don't lower it all the way to the floor, so if you are in the same range it should be no problem. Occasionally I wish it had more leg room, but I usually don't notice that until I've been in it for 2+ hours.
