So the white thing they are describing to you is the potash. That is what they use in making the soap. Also, shea butter can be added along with palm oil in certain proportions to get an even richer black soap. For those who cannot tolerate the harshness of the raw soap, the pH can be adjusted with citric acid to make it suitable for sensitive skins. The harshness is because the soap is alkaline in nature and that is what gives it those antibacterial properties.
