In case you out there in KZbinLand are not aware, scratch-off packs are essentially "split the pot" raffles. Half goes to the state and half gets distributed out as winnings. The packs that offer the grand prize have only 1 winner in the entire pack. Taking other players into account, on average, you will win 1/3 of what you spend. I remember back in the day, the scratch off delivery drivers used to know which books had the big winners in them. I used to work at a corner store and he’d tell the owner. I just wanted to point out that odds and probability aren't the same thing. However, they are related. Since the odds are 1:2.99 that implies that the probability would be 1/(1+2.99) = 1/3.99 or approximately 25.06% . So if you bought 30 tickets you would expect on average about 7 or 8 winners, not 10.

My son worked at a liquor store that had the first lottery scam in Massachusetts. The owners would scratch the code and if it was a winner they would cash it somewhere else. they would sell the losing tickets to customers who were not aware. Also; every book usually had a $500 winner, so lots of people would buy the whole book of tickets knowing this. The lottery usually had a payout of $30 minimum for evwery hundred spent. Now its about 25% per $100 and even less. But my opinion its better than any casino in massachusetts which is the lowest paying casinos in the country.

I live in Massachusetts. Years ago i used to win quite a bit. In the last 15 years the lottery has gotten really cheap. I think it's due to the fact that they really raised the jackpots alot. For example a $5 ticket's jackpot back then might have been 100,000. Now it's a million which takes away from the total number of smaller prizes. I don't play like I used to because of that.

Stupid really....Thats one thing they do not do in NH...In NH you win the denomination of the ticket cost and nothing less..This business of putting 5 and 2 dollar wins on a 20 dollar ticket is ridiculous

No I just think this is for not playing an entire pack. Years ago I played a whole pack of the $1 ($500 a week for life) and lost half my money. These never are a good idea

Agreed, the odds are really bad. But you can’t win if you don’t play. I just stress for people to play within their means.
