Full press conference: UVA's Tony Bennett announces retirement

A tearful Bennett said he isn't the person to lead the Cavaliers in the current college sports landscape, and said he's at peace with the decision to step down. He wants longtime assistant Ron Sanchez to take over the program.

Coach Bennett's ability to lift a team from the depths of hell one year and take them to the mountaintop a year later speaks volumes to his determination and resilience. He's a class act and chose to exercise integrity in the moment of choice rather than allow the DYNAMICS of NIL and transfer portal to compromise his principles. Kudos to him for STANDING TEN TOES DOWN on his values. 👏👍🏀

Great coach. Even better man. I met Coach Bennett 20+ years ago when I was an assistant high school coach and he was an assistant for his dad at Wisconsin. My first impression was "this guy is really good.. what a class act." My first impression was right! Congratulations on a great career, Coach. Best of luck in your retirement and future endeavors. When I entered UWGB soccer program as a freshman, Tony was a sophomore basketball player. His Dad was the head b ball coach. Class family. Good morals, work ethic and kind people. All the best Tony:-)

I had the pleasure of watching Tony play in high school at Preble and in college at UWGB. His father instilled in him his discipline, moral fiber and faith. He is leaving for all the right reasons. Godspeed.

The next 30 for 30 doc should be about VA losing to the 16 seed then winning the championship the next year. I don’t know much about VA basketball but I think that would be an amazing story. Coach seems like such a good dude.

I have respected this man so much. Almost as much as Coach K. His attitude towards basketball should be an inspiration. I never really cared if Duke lost to teams like Kansas and Virginia because I thought so much of the opposing coach that I felt that if they got it, then they absolutely deserved it. He is a great man and coach and his departure only makes the game overall worse because it is such a hole created. They have been steadily destroying the game I love so much for decades and this just brings all of the problems into focus. This sucks.

Sometimes the game is more than X's and O's and wins and losses. No UVa fan by any stretch of the imagination, but, I believe Bennett is a class act and a helluva coach. The ACC and the game will be less with his departure. As a longtime ACC hoops fan, UNC in particular, it is sad with the way the game is turning out. Bennett said almost verbatim what Roy Williams said when he left UNC. Not against NIL per se, but as Bennett alluded to, there needs to be controls and limits. Sad that it is pushing out one of the good ones. Glad it is not a health issue, Godspeed.
