I was there in the infield. A couple friends and I were going to school at the American Motorcycle Institute (AMI) next to the speedway. Bank #3 was right next to the school, and we could hear practicing and polling a few days before, but obviously couldn't see anything. But the sound of them, literally just a few hundred feet away, out of sight was enough for us to know we had to see this on the fourth, which just happens to be my birthday. At the tender age of turning 24, it is a time I will always remember.

There has to be a full race replay somewhere out there. It’s shocking that one of the most famous NASCAR races doesn’t have a full race replay on the internet
@Federalwaywebbs4 жыл бұрын
This was probably a segment on ABC's Wide World of Sports. You didn't see much flag to flag coverage back then, especially on ABC. ABC probably didn't even record the entire event.

There isn't one. The firecracker 400 used to run during the week of the 4th ...as in ....the weekday....this race ran Wednesday and was aired at 8pm eastern after the local news on the east coast

The fact that there isn’t a full race replay somewhere that can be shared is a damn tragedy.

It’s just the TVs, tapes and signals of the time that made them look bad. The original footage and sound recordings are top-notch. As long as the original is well-preserved, it’s gonna look and sound great

Even though it ended under caution, It's still an awesome finish because they both knew it was the last lap. BTW I hope we can all come back here in a year, including the king, and check in. Wish you all good health in the coming months.

NASCAR should post the 1987, The Winston like this, showing the first 3 laps and final 2 laps if the first two segments. Then showing the entirety of the final settlement and post race.

How is a full race replay only 32 minutes long?
@epaddon4 жыл бұрын
Because ABC back in the day aired the Firecracker 400 only on "Wide World Of Sports" with limited coverage. In short, they were still broadcasting races like it was the 1960s and early 70s even though flag-to-flag was increasingly the norm.

Theodore R this was before they ran this race on the weekends. For a while up until until 1987 (with 1988 being the first year) the 400 mile summer race was always held on The 4th Of July and the race was held on whatever day of the week the 4th fell on. Then in 1988 they moved it to the first July weekend in the month.
