My mission for my aquarium business (still small and just starting) is to keep the hobby affordable. I have no problem under pricing other people in order to make it affordable. Not many people can afford a few hundred or thousand dollar coral. And I want everyone to be able to have the option to have a beautiful reef tank in their home and office.

Exactly! And if the majority of what you're selling, you've cultured yourself. It's all profit anyway, so there'a no need to be greedy on the pricing

Really great video Jake. I think you brought up a lot of good points about how companies especially at conventions need to start making pricing more reasonable to the average person. I also totally agree with your comments about having to ask the prices for every coral and kinda scaring you away rather than just labeling each section. Companies should take down some notes because you hit the nail on the head today.

Don't need to tell you, but coral prices go crazy in waves. For awhile, it seemed like you couldn't buy any zoanthid for less than $10/head. During that time, you could get dang near any acro frag for $30-$40. All of a sudden, zoas have cooled and those acro frags are $150. Then acros cooled, on and on and on and on.

I am happy to hear some complaints about some of these ridiculous prices especially torch corals. It seems in sale threads EVERYONE is selling them. So if there are so many being sold how are they still getting that number. If there is an abundance of them what makes them special then. Just like those Acro like the ones I see on every 3rd thread for sale Walt Disney, homewrecker, and such.

I’m super glad that you weren’t afraid to put these idiot seller on blast. I live here in Los Angeles, and I know I’m right here where all the wholesalers are, but I have seen (just the other day) at one of the shops here in the San Fernando Valley part of L.A., a set of Torch Coral, including a bright green fist size frag for about $150.00, which was fantastic. Some sellers at these conventions need to not be in business. Total opportunists.

So true about the coral pricing...one thing i have also noticed is some of the vendors will jack up their prices once it has been mentioned on reef builders magazine or any other article. As much as i like to know about the coral’s origin but vendors just dont care except $. And once the link of your article is published they will take it and post it on forums and facebook pages and than that coral which could have been sold for $50 is now $500. Not that i am calling you off Jake i like the information you share but these guys just turn it around for their benefits. Nonetheless thank you for raising this topic. We need to make this hobby affordable for it to survive.

1. Those insanely high prices are ripoff. Why i say this you may ask? Because those colors only come out when all blue lights are on. You want to spice it up even more? Throw on some yellow/orange lense glasses in front of ur eyes and they pop like fire, or same yellow/orange lense filter for your camera or phone and yeah....youll get your crals to pop like that. Even regular polarized sun glasses make coral colors pop a bit. What im saying is that vendors are cheating when they advertise their corals to make them look like they cost thousands. 2. A reefapoluza speaker once said that you only get those insane colors when the coral is just a small frag. Half an inch to an inch. Once they grow into a colony the coral does not keep those insane colors and becomes a single dominant color throughout the colony. If you watch some of Dr. Sanjay videos, as good as he is with sps, he too says that once the frag grows into a colony it becomes one single dominant color. Please be informed and dont fall those insane coral prices. Some vendors just want to take advantage of us and want to get rich from one day to the next. Knowing this piece of information might help you negotiate a way lower price with ur lfs next time the want to sell you that $1000 half inch frag which in reality should be a $45 frag +/- Im just saying, lets stop this ridiculous price madness.

Jake I commend you, as soon as I clicked this video I was going to ask you a comment if you knew why torch corals were stupidly overpriced now, and while you don't need to point out names of vendors (because they're all guilty of it) you publicly said what everyone is thinking about. Personally I've given up on the whole coral market, they're mostly all a bunch of crooks and speculators with the prices they're charging for these things, and it goes all the way up and down the chain, it's not like Aussie wholesalers aren't seeing how much these prices are going for and of course they're going to get it on it too by upcharging all these corals, and I haven't even gotten started on the whole "blast everything you grow with royal blue and UV LEDs and magically watch how they have funky colors"... but I'm not going to mention any of those by name, but everyone knows them... slap a fancy new name and YOUR name on an existing coral that looks "better" because people have LED lighting versus when they had metal halide or T5 lighting and double the price. I'm just happy with corals that I have like the Bali green slimer and oregon torts of the world. The worst part of it ... people are paying these outrageous prices, $2k for a colorado sunburst? Yet as you said, call any store and you can get them, go to these events and you see dozens upon dozens through multiple vendors... yeah they're "rare".
