I have a similar output turbo miata with lots of chassis and suspension upgrades. It's got Toyo Proxes r1r tires and it's like you say: it's too much grip. Especially on the street if I want to try and drift around a corner, on stock tires I could do it at 30, now I'd have to be going 50 and it's a lot less predictable.

Awesome build. I can see how in 2005 this would have been a really up-to-date turbo build. If you don't mind me asking why are you still using the FMU with the MS1? Also, why the Greddy EBC and not running a MAC valve off the MS1? Love the car and I think your builds are some of the most complete and attention to detail orientated for someone that drives the cars so hard. I focused much more on the function aspect on my NA but I agree 100% that the hardtop and other styling ques are needed to distract from the overall feminine presence of the car. Again, credit goes to your great eye for detail. I would almost assume you did some time in the military or a parent perhaps.
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
+NA6 driver I literally have one of the first run of group buy MSPNPs made. There was issues early on that were sorted out over several firmware revisions, so I didn't really want to mess around with adding auxiliaries. And maybe because 10 years ago, a much less experienced me was probably too afraid to solder more stuff to the board lol. As for the FMU, it came with the Greddy kit. It was 200.00 for an adjustable FPR or 13.00 for the 3:1 disk that is in there now. Both are just a means of raising fuel pressure, so I didn't really see the benefit of spending the money on an adjustable unit if I could just buy the new disk. Thank you very much for compliments, but I am neither military or a parent. I am just a guy who loves automotive with a great passion and try to demonstrate that love in the details of my builds :)
@CodyYankey8 жыл бұрын
+Quinn Kizis I missed the part where you changed the disk in the FMU. I can see how you would need more fuel pressure at your power level on the 460s. I'm a bit lower power than you with fresh 460s and see 80% duty cycle at 180kPa on cold nights at 43psi fuel pressure. I can also understand not wanting to fix something that isn't broken, and the EBC clearly works well for you, lol. Love the builds man, and thanks for investing into some audio equipment, it really helped out in this video. looking forward to your future projects.

Such a sick car, god damn. Do you ever feel like you went with too much horsepower? Since it does seem to be like a hand full to manage or is the 250 horsepower worth it? I have a 99 Miata my self and I always thought around 200 horsepower with small turbo that spools fast would be perfect because it would still be easy as hell to manage but give me that extra power the car is lacking. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for making all these informative videos.
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Heagerty Thanks man. I'd say this car is close to the limit of what the chassis can take before it really becomes a joke car. The track surface at Lime Rock's go kart track is definitely less grippy than normal road conditions. If you are looking for around 200-230 whp I think the Rotrex supercharger kits are the way to go. They are reasonably priced, very simple to install and produce less heat than other superchargers and turbochargers. Or you can do a K series swap if you want all motor. 200 whp N/A is not easy on a BP. I've just about maxed my NB engine out while keeping it streetable and it is making 185 whp all motor.
@crate28198 жыл бұрын
Quinn Kizis I saw your NB videos and couldn't get enough of that car. Do you think your NB is more fun than an s2000? I absolutely love s2000's mainly due to the engine and gear box. I feel like the NB is more fun to throw around corners due to lower weight and shorter wheel base or just what mazda did making the chassis, haha.

18psi at 250whp? I would try going for lower boost settings and making the tune more efficient. You could have much better response at the same power level. Otherwise, the car looks, sounds, and goes well. You've done a really good job. Edit: and also, why have an FMU when it's already on a standalone ecu with larger injectors? I find FMU's to be very finicky and it's much less complicated to just get a good fuel map on the ecu.
@TheSlipAngle6 жыл бұрын
I am not following what you are saying. The turbo is going to spool at the same rate regardless of how much boost I am running. The head flows what the head flows. What do you mean make the tune more efficient? We have quite a bit of time into this tune at all levels of load as well as tuning all of the corrections. This setup has been making this power level for over 30k miles with how I drive it. I'd say the tune is pretty good. As far as the FMU goes, you do understand it is just a fuel pressure regulator right? You change the rate/pressure by changing disks vs turning a screw with a traditional adjustable FPR. It cost me 12.00 to change the disk vs 150.00 of buying an adjustable unit. At base fuel pressure, the 460cc injectors will not support this power level, therefore we needed to increase fuel pressure to be able to support it, hence the requirement of something to increase fuel pressure.
@WTGRacing6 жыл бұрын
The FMU does make more sense now that you mentioned the injector size. Also, my mention of making the same power with lower boost is favoring a more immediate power delivery. It wouldn't take as long to spool 14 psi as 19. And more importantly, it could reach the targeted boost at a lower rpm, making the power more linear. Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "efficient", since your work has clearly proven reliable and makes good power. There are many ways to skin a cat.
@TheSlipAngle6 жыл бұрын
Volumetric efficiency of the cylinder head is the same and displacement is the same, so the turbo spool rate is not really going to change. The turbo is still going to build boost at the same rate whether you run 14 psi or 19 psi. Sure you hit 14psi sooner than 19 psi, but to get from 14 to 19psi is such a small fraction of a second it doesn't matter. The car overall will be faster running 19 psi over 14 psi. You are not going to make the same peak power at 14 psi as you are at 19 psi, so I don't understand when you are say "making same power with less boost". Unless it is strictly just trying to boost more sooner but there is not really any way you can do that without compromise or increasing VE and displacement. You can run more timing advance to try to achieve more power with less PSI and maybe increased PSI at a lower RPM but that is a great way to strain the rotating assembly and decrease overall life of the motor. The tuning on this engine is kind of no BS at this point. All bases are covered. Makes good power, doesn't detonate or run too hot, doesn't have too much timing so it snaps rods or runs rough, has very good street manors and driveability for a car tuned this much, has air temp, coolant temp, voltage corrections tuned for all scenarios, etc. I've seen a lot of people convinced that turbo Miata's cannot do more than 220 whp without forged internals because their setup failed, but 99% of the time it is just bad tuning. It's the most important component. I've been around in this scene for a long ass time. I've seen it all for the most part at this point and I've seen countless builds suffer premature deaths because of various reasons, but a lot of them were tuning related. More than half of my cars have standalone ECUs in them, some dating back as far to 2007. I have yet to lose a motor. You are more than welcome to tune how you want to but I am going to disagree. Years of proven reliability, driveability and making good power are why I stand by the way we do things.
@WTGRacing6 жыл бұрын
Good points. I'm just surprised to see how much boost it's running at that power level and set up. Anyway, thanks for your input, and I'm stoked to see how the rotary build goes in this car.
@AndrewLeet928 жыл бұрын
Awesome car. I am also running MSPNP2 and a greddy setup on my miata, however I struggle with boost issues related to the wastegate actuator. Do you have a recommendation?
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
+André Baumgartner Get a stronger wastegate actuator and size as close to the max boost you want to run as possible. The more you deviate from what it is rated for, the more it will struggle to maintain that boost level.

How did you install the S2000 antenna? Where'd you buy that 'spacer' that sits between the antenna and the antenna assembly? Thanks, great looking car!
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
I bought it as a kit years ago that included the spacer for the NA Miata body. You just have to remove the old antenna assembly and sandwich the body with the new antenna assembly, It just screws together.

Quin, love these videos. I Just picked up an engine from a 99 car that i am planning on rebuilding for a turbo and swapping into my 1992. I'm looking for help creating a build sheet of what is necessary and what is not to make good reliable power (approximately 250-300). Would love the help if you could.
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
+Will T You can do 250 to 275 whp (maybe even more) all day long on stock internal engine. The tuning and cooling will be the most critical aspects of the reliability assuming you have everything else to support the setup: fueling, drivetrain, etc.
@Zypher9dotse8 жыл бұрын
Both your miatas are awesome! But for a day on the track or some curvey roads would you choose the ITB or Turbo one?
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
+Zypher9dotse Thanks man. I typically enjoy driving the ITB car more for technical stuff. It just edges out the turbo car in regards to the balance and overall experience. Maybe that will change once this turbo cars gets an all motor 13b ;)
@speedyshenanigans2 жыл бұрын
Bro, the car is so gripped that just using control with throttle won't be enough, you need to use the clutch to build your revs if they go too low or it just won't rev back up quick enough, theres a lot o fdifferent clutch teniques that help a lot, have a look at fd drivers footwork and you will see how gripped up there cars and then you will know everything

Hi! I noticed none of the cars have a coolant reroute. I am curious what is your opinion on the coolant reroute or why haven't you done it :) (i searched your threads if this has been answered before, but i couldn't find one). Thanks!
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
Since this car is primarily a street car, I don't think it really warrants it. If I were to track it a lot then it might be of benefit. It is only my personal opinion, but I don't think the coolant reroute is as critical as it has been made out to. In Spec Miata we weren't allowed the modification and would run 4 hour enduro races on hot days without issues. Now that doesn't mean that I don't think there is some added benefit to it, but just not a necessity.

I'm on the edge of doing something to make my Miata faster, but I'm not really sure about turbo, since this car is my main time attack weapon, and way to master the driving aspects. I've been tracking mine for 2 years now, I would like to add power, but I'm not sure if turbo is a way to go, since I really like N/A engines. Is your setup responsive enough to the throttle? I never put a turbo to any car, so I'm not really sure what to expect.
@TheSlipAngle Жыл бұрын
It's just a really different power delivery. Throttle will never be as responsive as the ITB cars but the ITB cars will never make as much power as the FI cars. Best bet would be to try to get a ride in someone's and see how it feels to you

Have you ever considered the fastback hardtop? You did mention you don't like how feminine they look. Is there a reason you went with a turbo rather than supercharger which would provide a more linear power-band? Thanks for the great content!

I have considered a fastback. I do like them, but there is some angles that always made me reluctant to ever pull the trigger on one. At the time there was only roots blowers available and I wasn't too thrilled with the placement or the added heat. The turbocharged setup allowed for easier packaging and cooling mods. Plus I can drive the car off boost when cruising normally. And thank you for subscribing!

how do you like the car without power steering? I've been debating removing mine and I'm just not sure
@bartvanriel67678 жыл бұрын
unknown1creature just do it, I did it to my nb and I'm absolutely loving it, good weight while driving and certainly don't need it in the parking lot with a car this light
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
It's not too bad. You probably want to remove as much caster as you can with the alignment as the steering effort required does increase. The wider wheels and grippy tires also add to this effect. It is certainly manageable on a small light car like the Miata though. I mostly did it for the space savings and to be able to run my IC piping how I wanted to. My NB with only 8" wheels and 205 tires is much nicer to drive with a depowered rack.

Never had it in mine, parking etc is a bit of a workout, but once you get going all is well. All in all, i'm glad i don't have it as i love the feeling.

I had a question on how you installed your fender flares; the fronts are fairly straightforward but on the rears there are 2 layers of metal and I'm not quite sure what to do. I've seen people fold the metal over the edge, fill the gap with expanding foam, or weld the gap shut. I'm just curious on how you did yours since I'll be installing some to accommodate wider tires. Any help is appreciated!

I snipped a bunch of notches on the inner layer then hammered them over the other layer and sealed it all with silicone.

Do you know just how much goes into this? The hours of fucking research and trial and error and then here comes you "please hand me shit for free." Knowledge cost you the same price as the rest of us, TIME. which aint' cheap, so get to reading. XD

@garagequinnmotors Absolutely love this build. Seems like I have the same build goals for my 99. have a fun, fast, street car that can be a strong contender at a track event or two. I'm curious about how much this build cost?
@TheSlipAngle6 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. I couldn't give you a dollar amount if I tried. I've never kept track of costs.

When you did the ARP head studs, did you replace the head gasket or did you leave the head in place and just replace the studs?
@TheSlipAngle3 жыл бұрын
Head off and new gasket.

What kind of seat brackets did you use for the custom seats? And what was the price for the pair if you remember?
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
I just modified the stock seat rails and made adapter brackets.

did you do all these mods yourself? also, how much cost wise would you say it cost you for all the aftermarket parts especially those amazing seats and side lamps.
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
Yes I did. Probably could have bought an ND for what I have into the car.
@ozerinx8 жыл бұрын
thats what im debating right now. the nd 2017 rf or the na modded

+jeffbk95 Thank you. I have no idea honestly. I've never tried to keep track and it took me over 10 years to build.
