Scotty Bowers was the go-to guy for any and all sexual fantasies. A fixture of the Hollywood scene for over 70 years, he had a little black book locked away in his head until 2012, when his "tell-all" hit the shelves of bookstores everywhere. The book exposed the not-so-secret sex lives of many old Hollywood stars.

I met Scotty a few times when he appeared on a show I was working on about a year before he passed away. He was about 187 years old but still sharp and funny. Super sweet guy. “Everything was 20 bucks!” Haha

I read the book about Scotty Bowers. Tons of names dropped and my jaw dropped more than once. What really surprised me was how easygoing his co-workers were towards sex in general. But then again, many of them had served in WWII, so engaging in something that was fun for a little pay probably seemed like a no-brainer.

Scottie Bowers was a free pansexual person and helped people to live their sexuaility freely at a time when everything was forbbiden and appear conventional. His contacts and services were much needed at a time when sex was (wrongly) to be hidden.

*I remember once being told that the death of Natalie Wood wasn't an accident, but that she was about to lift the lid on a host of closeted gay actors. She was 'permanently' silenced in order to let them continue deceiving the public with the illusion of male virility. It sounded outlandish at the time, but thinking it over since, it doesn't really sound that improbable. She was deathly afraid of water and yet was partying on a boat. That alone is one inconsistency in her life*

Hello, first of all, I want to say I love old movies from the 1920s to the early 1960s. Also, I adore anything and everything on old Hollywood. It's very fascinating. So sorry for the blog comment! LOL! Ok! back in the beginning of Hollywood in the 1900s, to the golden era of Hollywood, and even beyond, it was a very, very liberal anything goes place. Everything was accepted. I communicated with a couple of Hollywood insiders who I'm not at liberty to say who they are. One of them wrote and worked in the Hollywood industry with some actors. She said a man who did a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff in the film industry said, the 1960s was nothing compared to what we were like in Hollywood in the 1930s. He said it got extremely wild. This same lady said a friend of hers knew Scotty Bowers and he said Scotty is full of it! There were a lot of gay and bisexual people in the Golden Era of Hollywood, but they were terrified that it would leak out to the public, so they usually had sex with other actors and actresses in their profession who were gay or bisexual. It was playing it safe that way. Also, she said they would never ever go to a gasoline station so casually to pick up guys. Again, this was the era of the studio system. I once read that MGM I believe, had a brothel on the lot for straight actors to go to prostitutes. They thought if the actors wanted to go to a prostitute, it would be controlled by the studio, and they wouldn't get caught in a public brothel by the gossip columnists. Also, the studios had doctors to treat movie stars for syphilis, which many would get often. Somone one online once said his grandmother was a nurse who said Joan Crawford would come in with venereal disease very often. About the Duck and Duchess of Windsor. I communicated with this lady whose father was an actor, and she too I can't use her name. She had a friend who knew the Duke and Duchess of Windsor very well. Her friend said the Duke of Windsor was not gay, I know I was shocked too when she told me this, and the Duchess Windsor wasn't either. They did love each other very much at the beginning, but their love wore away. The duke regretted marring the duchess becuase he felt useless in his life with her. Their marriage was a big mistake. This lady said, Debbie Reynolds was a lesbian or most likely bisexual. Someone told me she watched the documentary on Tab Hunter talking about his life as a gay man in Hollywood. Tab Hunter said there are actors today who are married who don't want to come out of the closet. He said you would be shocked if you know who they are. BTW, before the Hayes Act which started in 1933 or the pre-code era, the films got away with a lot. There was some nudity, they made films on subjects like prostitution, etc. were more graphic than the films that were made during the Hayes Act. There is an early film starring Barbra Stanwyck in the early 1930s, which her character is very poor, but she strives to live the affluent life by using sex as her tool to get to that place. It's really risqué. However, films later in Hollywood dealt with sex by using innuendo. Usually, scenes which the characters are kissing, and it fades to black indicating they had sex, or the next day the couple is buttoning up their clothes or fixing their disheveled clothes up a bit and they were together all night.

The major point missed, which is common among younger readers/bloggers, is how taboo homosexuality is even TODAY in show business. We know several actors and singers today who are currently in fake relationships/marriages. Back then however, you were labeled "sexual deviant" and could possibly face severe harassment including loss of job and housing and possible arrest depending on where you lived.

Yes! I've been waiting for this! So good, guys. Such a thorough and nuanced discussion of a VERY complex and fascinating man. There's so much to talk about and you kept things concise but didn't miss any of the juicy tidbits. I love these Old Hollywood topics (like your Tab & Tony episode) digging into the complicated truth behind the glossy veneer the public was force-fed. I think it honors those lives to actually discuss their richness and fullness in a comprehensive and inclusive way. It also helps restore some of the history that has been swept under the rug or hidden to conform to a conservative narrative that just wasn't accurate to how people existed then or how they exist today. I think it's invaluable to expose this uncensored version of history so that people know we were always and will always be here! Thank you so much for this. Loved every second of it.

I think I’m pulled in both directions. On one hand, it’s up to those individuals to come out or not, on the other hand, there was nothing wrong with any of it. And the conservative narrative that’s always been pushed needs to come down so everybody will realize people need to be able to be who they are.

More, more, more Coffee & Tequila, Zach and Alistair!!! I LOVE ❤ the "Bewitched"-inspired cartoon opening & music!!!! Absolutely amazing 👏!! I saw my 21 year old nephew this weekend and mentioned "Bewitched" by chance. He looked at me blankly and said "What are you talking about?" 😳 I knew the writer / celebrity Gore Vidal towards the end of Gore's life. He told me that everything in Scotty's book was true. It's so cool 😎 that the two of you talk about Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy, Randolph Scott (I know a guy whose big claim to fame is that he slept with Randolph Scott in the back of "Randy's" Jag) and 4-time Best Actress winner, Katherine Hepburn. I know a famous author who used to stay with Hepburn at her townhouse in NYC. She was definitely gay. He used to have dinner at her home with her live-in lesbian girlfriend. I'd like you guys to watch Kate Hepburn in "Woman of the Year" with Spencer Tracy and give us your reviews. Hepburn also starred in the film "The Lion In Winter" for which she tied for the Best Actress Oscar with Barbra Streisand who starred in "Funny Girl." You guys should watch both movies and give us your reviews. That would make a great show! Also, Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant in "Bringing Up Baby" versus Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neill in "What's Up Doc?" That's a whole show right there for you! xxx ooo ❤ 😍 💖 ❣ 💕 💘

I heard beautiful handsome muscular George Prepard had gay sex, boy, I would of loved to have had sex with him over and over again ... Good for them, and Carey Grant and Randoplf Scott really did love each other, yes they married woman but their marriages did not last long, not when your not with your true love ❤🎉😊wish they did not have to hide their lives, they should have been free to love each other and be together for their entire lives!!!

I don't think you have to be Sigmund Freud to see that Scotty did a lot of burying of things that were extremely painful--too painful to allow himself to experience consciously. A complex man for whom sex was, partially at least, a way of negating or avoiding that pain. And may I say, the best part of your vids, guys, is watching your relationship in action.

Because of the deep concern regarding future legality of abortions mentioned, I want to point out that years ago abortions weren't discussed. No one would talk about that nor did people want to even think about it. But for years now abortions have been openly discussed. When people can talk about things that's power because it's out in the open. We'll never go back to the awful horrible days of back alley or coat hanger abortions. We're too smart now, and those days were too sickening for anyone to want to bring them back, including conservatives. I'm confident that there will continue to be open speech and legal abortions available. I'm saying this because I've seen too many women fearful of losing rights to their own body and wanted to bring some peace to them.

Having read plenty Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy bios ( tbh i think i read all, i am an old hollywood fanatic haha), Scotty got it wrong or, i am pretty sure, Scotty is just saying his version of what he thought he knew but Spencer and Hepburn truly were in a physical and emotional relationship. They were clearly bisexual, but for sure had been in love too, and the evidences to that are vast and includes personal letters found later on And no, it wasnt publicized about Katharine Hepburn and Tracy at the time (40s to 60s).

Hey Guys ... to me, this is easily the best Coffee & Tequila you've done. The only other episodes I liked were on 'Tab and Tony'. I haven't watched enough of your other episodes because the horror stuff and the talentless female singers are boring. But you really come alive in this episode - never seen the two of you so animated and the interaction between you is electric and beautiful. This is totally a side comment to the main thrust of the episode, but I just wanted to say the movie that Nestor Almendros won the academy award for was “Days of Heaven,” directed by Terence Malick, and it may be the most visually stunning film I have ever seen. Where I live in North central Connecticut, next door is Hartford, CT, where in a lovely cemetery, here there is the Hepburn family stone, and Katherine is buried there I didn't care for the documentary as too much about his hoarding and stuff, not much about his past Hollywood life.. I read the book when it 1st century out, did see the documentary & did not like Hollywood on Netflix, but I do love old Hollywood. I was shocked by some revelations, but not so shocked by others. Mostly felt bad for those who had to hide what they were. Scotty's life was a Hollyeood story.

This was great! The book was a great read. Katharine Hepburn was one of the most interesting. I went to her estate sale at Sotherby's in 2004. Great event.

I enjoyed Scotty Bowers' book. I think he took too long to write his memoirs, because so many people had to die before he could completely go on the record. I first heard about Scotty and his famous Richfield Station about 35 years ago, and I can well believe that what he said in his book was true. I found the documentary hard to watch due to the graphic scenes of hoarding in those houses. I guess Scotty's widow got tasked with the job of getting all the properties cleaned up. Regarding his childhood sexual situations, which he did not regard as abuse, he stated this in the documentary: "If you get paralyzed for life in a car accident, that ruins your life. If someone sucks your c**k, that does not ruin your life."

Oh my God I knew Bowers well many did especially if good-looking. And I'm not getting all into it except to say mid late 70s disco era us San Diego Lombard underage disco (if we weren't using fake IDs to get into WCPC) our gang often drove up Hollyweirdland to hangout at bigger Odyssey underage disco (if we weren't trying to get in StudioOne) at least I think that's how it went. But honestly I remember more thr happenings like rich men I mean RICH rich producer types is when we'd drive to Laguna and hangout dance at BoomBoom room disco on Coast. We'd get all lit then go trapsing up the alley (actually a street called Gaviota that looked like alley) to the old Little Shrimp piano bar on Cress St sorta draggish like. Evidently sadly both bars closed for good years ago now but if the walls could speak who what where went when. LOL. But we knew Scott Bowers. There use to be this well known SoCalif club parties thrown monthly or bimonthly it all depended what members threw. I think they were called BoysLife club or something. The older rich dudes were who the main members and you had to get invited by them or someone in the whole loop and they were basically designed to flock together all the good looking boys to the wealthy. Many of those were up in Laguna Beach too. But they were totally fun to go up and many famous celeb musicians etc at those which Ill never divulge names. Only reason I blab Bowers it's already here. But those ole late 70s early 80s dayz was magical FUN better time to come out flap wings with so many crazy fun memories. Look for my book. 😳😅😁💋

Greetings from Chiapas, México. I just love this new content. When I lived in Chicago in the 80s I met a makeup artist and hairdresser named Alan Seidel, while bartending at the Red Lion. Alan was very much involved in the Hollywood scene and worked for some of the stars. After a successful career in Hollywood he returned to the Windy City to take care of his ailing mother. Wile serving him he would tell me many wild stories about Scotty and the gossip about who fucked whom back in the day. Alan also mentioned what a nice guy Scotty was...then he would chuckle and add..."nice and horny"

I read a book in college called Queer in America. It basically told the same kind of story. Agents and Pimps and Lawyers having full time jobs just keeping gay and lesbian hollywood stars in the closet. Producing "beards" and "phantom spouses" and placing articles in the scandal magazines to show the lesbians in public with popular actors and the gays with cute starlets.
