Id say the biggest problem with the 229 besides the vacuum issues, is the viscous coupler on the 229, they seem to all be bad, and arent at the spec amc sets when you do the torque wrench test.. i think mine was at like 12-15 ft lbs or something and it should be 25.. It works fine in 4wd, but still

The best combination for a full size jeep was up to 1979 with a T15A 3sp or T18A 4sp and a model 20 transfer case and locking hubs. Dana 44 full float front and 44 rear. Anything with quadra non sense was bull shit. Chains would stretch and skip when under load. I owned 4 of these long before they were popular and over priced.
