Not that I like to see people struggle but honestly I appreciate this video having all of those awkward moments of, dropping the filler, having to position yourself on your head, and just all of the weird ways you had to put the pipe to weld it. It makes me feel better that even professionals struggle with the same things that I have problems with when I'm just a hobbyist and occasionally weld stuff like this. Not many show that in their videos.

A few months ago I did a stainless exhaust on my truck. Yeah there's definitely different qualities of stainless out there I did play with Tig on mine for a little bit but ultimately wound up getting Tri gas and Mig welded the rest for the sake of time. I did purge the tubing either way but maybe I didn't give it enough time to fully purge.

One thing to consider when you are questioning the metal "quality" is that some of the material may be a 400 series stainless steel rather than a 300 series stainless steel. The main difference is the lack of Nickel in the 400 series. Also, the Carbon content may also be affecting your welding. PS: Great video. I have started doing aluminum fabrications and it is challenging at times. All that practice welding that I did on the coupons has really paid off. Even today, I will take a break and just weld beads on some coupons, some for practice in different positions, others to warm up before welding on a critical fabrication.

While youre not wrong, it is worth noting that Chineseium is crap regardless of the grade. If they advertise 304 or 316, you can be sure it is 300 series... and thats about it 😂
@paulkurilecz4209
@paulkurilecz4209 6 ай бұрын
@@chriso1373 A few percentage points in alloying element content, such as the difference in Cr and Ni content in 304 vs 316 really will not create a big difference in weldability. However, the difference in Ni content between 3XX and 4xx will make a big difference as most common 3XX have between 8% and 12% Ni while most 4XX has less than 0.5% Ni. I do agree that with commodity items from China for which there are no documentation requirements, the tramp elements may be excessive and cause problems.

Mr fabricator I have a question have you ever come across a blueprinted exhaust system for a car that was ISO specified like it actually had a blueprint that went with it the reason I ask is it seems like every video I have seen on KZbin outside of yours you explain everything which is something I like it seems like everyone cuts it to fit has there ever been a standardized blueprint for a exhaust system or is it all cut to fit in place

@thefabricatorseries This weekend want to repair a crack that has gone about halfway around the joint entering the muffler (no internal access). It is good quality stainless (Capristo). I've already brushed the outside clean and I've got back purge plugs. Do I cut the joint completely in two so I can wire wheel and acetone the inside free from soot, or do I just blast away? I think cutting is the right way, but I'm worried that the separation and gap from a sawzall could make it tougher to get perfectly aligned and then refitting to the car may be tougher. My skills are hobbyist level with an Alpha Tig 200.

Total newb here. I'm interested in welding stainless eventually, but my understanding is that welding stainless produces toxic and/or carcinogenic gasses (hexavalent chromium, I think it was?). I see Justin is not wearing any mask or respirator. So... What PPE or safety precautions are necessary when welding stainless?

Serious question, Im not being rude. You said don't buy cheep stainless and yes, we know what you mean. However, I ask what do you understand by this comment? I am assuming (with no evidence) that expensive stainless is more pure and therefore not magnetic. Conversely that cheep stainless is highly magnetic due to its being alloyed with mild steel for production economy and possibly for metology reasons, machining toolbit reasons, maliability, weldability to mild steel, electronic or magnetic requirements? There could be an infinate number of percentage ratios steel vs stainless in this mix. So do you check the stainless with a magnet before starting or quoting for a job or is there something else to gauge with? I know you said the crap tube was thinner but I doubt the thickness is a gamestopper. Thanks,

I'm also getting charged ~150USD to refill a 125cuft tank. The local gas shop won't even sell you anything larger, you have to lease a 300-330cuft tank for a year and spend 1000-1500 getting it topped up periodically. To buy the tank outright is 600-700 online at NorthernTool, but none of those stores are near me.

Did you know that start and stops are not good for the welds. Therefore you should weld more than one inch at a time. And forget the colours. Even gray is good colour if it clean easily with brush. You are basically welding strength welds not art. Also you need to clean the dirt before welding. Those roots look awfull. Sometimes its ideal to clean the oxides too. You will see why. Good point about root gas. Its also helps to wet the weld. Makes welding easier. Also it prevents forming of carbides. Have you noticed slag patches on the weld puddle when welding metals with bad quality? Also with those pipes dirt makes puddle act bad of course. It sucks impurities from the root to weld puddle.
