i still remember the night that lake land exploded. i was working at save on foods going to get the carts before the store closed and i saw 3 firetrucks rushing towards the downtown area, which is weird because you never see anymore than 2 going at a time. i took the bus home still unaware of what happened and i overheard a conversation from a lady talking to someone on her cellphone. i remember her saying "oh my god, lakeland?!" i still had no clue what had happened. when i got off the bus near my house i noticed an huge orange glow in the horizon. i thought it could have been the northern lights so i decided to go up a hill to get a better view and look at it for awhile. when i was climbing up the hill i thought to myself that the northern lights aren't orange. when i got to the top of the hill it literally overlooked the entire city, including where the lakeland mill was. what i saw was completely unbelievable, it looked like a nuclear bomb went off. i swear this huge area was completely covered in fire lighting up the surroundings like it was noon. it was so eerie hearing the sirens and looking at this sight. the initial explosion was heard from the farthest parts of town. some people thought a car accident had occured outside their home just of how loud it was.

saw mill workers are like.....the most down to earth people ever. and they're so hard working. My dad is a saw miller worker. This bothers the hell out of me, and probably a lot of other people in bc. Those people are true survivors of a tragedy, and it's horrible to see how broken they are now. How could nobody have done something sooner. I mean, there is a lot of other terrible things going on in the world, but that's just sad.

I worked in the paper industry for thirty years and have seen dust explode many times. We used to clean and clean all the time. One time I was walking along side on a paper machine. A small flare up of paper dust resulting in a small exposition that In turned cause a small blast that knocked the lose dust to fly off the beams and hoods. This in turn caused a bigger flare up which cause a bigger flare up. Fortunately we ran out of dust and the fire was checked.

Why didn't the union pull the workforce out? that's their job to keep their members safe.

I worked in a particle board mill for many years and have seen a lot of dust explosions. One took the lives of two contractors in November 1999. I heve dreams about that place twenty-three years later.

This is so sad. This is terrible too. How can companies just ignore the needs of their workers...oh wait, it's the money of course. And it's a damned shame!

Canada needs to do more to protect our tradesmen and women. I work in a factory n we do some sketchy things in there but a lot of these places are just terribly dangerous. The government needs to make sure these places are following proper protocol. What's more important. Making more money or having your workers killed\hurt or emotionally damaged. I'm just a junior welder so I'm not that important but a lot of these factories are responsible for bringing money into Canada cuz we do business with a lot of foreign countries. Tradesmen and tradeswoman do so much more for this country than people realize

They need to make a "Faces of Deregulation" and send it to every conservative in NA. This is what companies do when unchecked and unpunished for their obvious negligence. They don't give a damn about life, only their bottom line!
