It depends on what the laws are where she lives. Generally the laws on the squatters side. Home owners have very little in their favor for getting unwanted people out of their homes. Selling is definitely easier than evicting them.

Yes, I agree with everything you said. Hubby would have gotten divorce papers along with serving both with eviction papers, if it were up to me. She put up with tooooo much and should have taken care of everything so much sooner. The nerve of MIL to dispose of personal belongs, redecorate, etc. ... and lock her out of her own bedroom? Where was the husband when MIL did that? He was evil also, that he would allow that and to be siphoning off their savings to support MIL behind OP's back. Naw! He definitely had to go also! GOD'S justice prevailed. Their self-induced "misfortune" is their own fault.

Paragraph Person here, pm paraphrasing the story. OP allowed MIL to stay on three conditions, 6months limit, no redecorating, no changing house rules. MIL violates all three, and hosts gatherings. MIL tells family and friends that house belongs to Jeff, her son and OP's husband, that OP is a guest. People believe her. MIL removes furniture, brings in other for her own taste. OP sets up cameras, sees MIL opening OP's mail. OP finds bank statements in office shared with husband, sees he's been giving large sums to MIL since she mived in. MIL changes locks on OP's bedroom, keeps key to herself (no word on where Jeff sleeps), OP changes them back, a few months (!!!) later and MIL does it again, forcing OP to sleep in a guest room. At one point, when OP tells MIL off, MIL tells OP "if you don't like it, you can leave." Tries to pressure OP into putting Jeff on the house title, tries to get family to pressure OP too, even brings in real estate agent. Jeff never stands up to his mother, and sits while arguing goes on. When asked, he says he's "conflicted." OP (FINALLY!!!!) sees a lawyer, who says MIL can be evicted, but selling the OP's house would be a cleaner break. OP gets a real estate agent and starts secretly packing, puts stuff into storage unit, finds one room apartment. House is sold, cash offer. New buyers show up for final walkthrough, when MIL and Jeff finally learn what OP has done. They are upset about becoming homeless and expect OP to take them in. Jeff finally gets divorce papers. MIL ends up in shelter, while Jeff couch surfs at a friend's. They continue to hound OP, with MIL blaming OP for ruining her life, and Jeff wanting to get back together again, with the possibility of bringing MIL with him. Family and friends side with OP. OP moves to another city, points out to Jeff that the divorce is final, shreds MIL's demeaning multiple page letter, lives happily ever after.
