If I were her, I would have said (at the dinner) “I love you, Mom and Dad, I love ALL of you, but my parents crossed the line, and I need a break, so I HAVE to do this. I’m sorry to myself, my parents, and all of you, but I have to do this.”

Absolutely not the jerk. Few things chap my hide more than entitled parents who try to micromanage every moment of their families lives and then try to shift that energy on to other people. The quote of “clean your own damn house before you tell me how to clean mine” comes to mind. If Sarah doesn't release the grip and stop smothering her children, I guarantee you they're going to rebel as they get older and eventually, at their earliest convenience, move out and go no contact. I've seen it happen. For example, I knew a lady who had two kids from two different marriages seven years apart in age. When her daughter, the oldest, wasn't being completely ignored, she was parentified by her do-nothing mother into being her spoiled younger half-brothers nanny. Mommie Dearest treated her son like he could walk on water, never disciplined him, taught him a healthy respect for boundaries, that the word no is a complete sentence or any sense of accountability. Unsurprisingly, he got worse as he got older and one day [surprise, surprise] he was taller and stronger than her. I had warned her, for ages, but she wasn't doing him any favors by treating him like he was the second coming of Christ. Because I'm male, single and adamantly child-free by choice, she dismissed everything I had to say as I “didn't know” what I was talking about. She was all smug like she had won. One of those people who thinks that her opinions are facts, if that tells you anything. After realizing it was like talking to a wall, I told her that I hoped her arrogant logic would be sufficient comfort for when her son inevitably raised a hand to her or ended up standing before a judge. She did not like that. Because she was an emotional vampire who pulled focus, no matter how inappropriate the situation or occasion may have been, I went no contact with her when her son was a moody, angsty, rebellious 13-year-old. From what I remember, she was at her wits end and whined to anyone who would listen to “what went wrong.” What went wrong? It's called she was a lazy piece of crap irresponsible adult who never should have had kids.

I'm unsure if this is standard banking procedure, but I believe opening or funding a child's account without parental notification may be against regulations. It seems that most banks require parental or legal guardian consent before a minor's account can be opened. This is unlike inheritance, where beneficiaries receive assets only after the benefactor's death. While notification isn't required for wills, opening an account establishes legal ownership in the child's name, and this likely requires guardian approval if the individual is a minor. Only say this because it seems people think she had i choose not to tell her sister about the fund but mostly she had to in order to open the fund anyway.

Absolutely not in the least bit wrong. OP set down a firm boundary and is not asking for much, just a little respect. Mother-in-law said the quiet part out loud. At least the husband stood up for her. I'll give him credit where credit's due that he's standing by her side and won't allow the parents to see the grandchildren until they apologize. They might begrudgingly do it or double down. Who knows? Still, if I were OP or the husband, I would not let those people around my children because God knows that type of toxicity can screw a kid up.
