I think the reason why PopCap is still unbeaten in this type of game after it dominated the industry is that they made PC games, not mobile games. These were paid games that required a paid game's worth of content. Free to play mobile games are like the reality TV of video games, you down it without thinking. PopCap was making capital P PUZZLE games, ones that required genuine intellect and skill. Sure there was simple matching stuff, but Peggle and Plants vs Zombies run circles around any of the shlock that gets released today. PopCap were developing their best stuff basically right on the cusp of the huge mobile shift. Imagine the timeline where they just kept improving to this day.

Part of the reason why I don't think people mess with the music is that it's really damn hard to edit dynamic music tracks. A lot of PopCap's games use a audio file format that lets you jump around to arbitrary parts of a song based on triggers, and if you wanted to swap out the music, you'd either have to fit an existing song into those sections, or you'd have to manually change the jumps in the game's code, which seems like a ton of work just to add custom music.

iirc one of us asked the peggle modding discord for help on how to edit the dynamic music and i think literally no one knew how to even open the files because they're in some insane cryptic format. they are untouchable

@@FlippinEgg As it happens, I found a way to open the music files for PopCap games a bit ago (which is why I know how they work). I don't know how to properly repackage them so that Peggle can read it, but it's a start. So basically, the music is stored as an mo3 file, which is like a zip file for audio. You have to take that file, decompress it, and the result will be an IT file. You then open that file with a tool like OpenMPT, and from there you can try to edit the tracks, export them as mp3s, or save the result as a new IT file. Then, you use the same library as before to compress the IT file back into an mo3 file and insert it into the game. I haven't been able to run custom music yet, since something seems to be going wrong with the re-compression step, but it's definitely a start.

I was super excited about the pinewood derby because I put in a lot of effort, and so I was happy to go again when I tied with the scout leader's son.
