@6:28 Correct in your guess of onions garlics and gingers per bag. They handwrote the “/bag” over the printed /kg label. Nice work 🤓

While olive oil is great for dressing and mild cooking, it cannot be used for high temperature cooking like stir-fry or deep fry because of its low smoke point. For Chinese food, peanut oil is one of the most suitable choices for its neutral flavour and high smoke point, hence the large selection of peanut oil in the grocery there

Welcome to Macau 🇲🇴! Locals buy fresh meat , seafood , vegetables and fruits in wet markets. Older generations sees people who shop for meat and vegetables in the supermarkets are lazy and “not care about freshness of what they eat” 😅 The are a number of different supermarket chains in Macau and the one you visited was a small local one for lower income households. Big ones like Park-n-Shop got a much better wet food section. As for bread, we don’t really buy bread in supermarkets unless we are desperate 😂 we go to bakeries. The Portuguese buns are easily found in bakeries. And as for Portuguese cheese etc., you need to visit supermarkets that target local Portuguese. 🙂

Very nice! I'm currently teaching English in China, and I'm having a video interview tomorrow. If all goes well, I'll fly out next week for a face-to-face interview. Seeing videos like this gives me a better idea of what to expect, price-wise. Thanks!

Welcome to Macau! There are several bigger chains of supermarkets, each with slightly different selections (catered to the neighbourhood they serve, I suppose). San Mui has more mainland brands. Royal is more local. Park N (from HK) carries more international brands. My favourite is Seng Cheong, a smaller chain that carries more “western” products like breads, cheeses, cured meats, a butcher counter… You can find “real” coffee and mustard for sure! If you know where to look, you can find organic veggies with reasonable prices too.

Thanks for your review in Macao Supermarket and hope you enjoy the time! As Macao citizen, knowing the feeling that you may got disappointed about mustard. Some bigger supermarkets will sell that. Because local citizens seldom use mustard so which is not quite popular for some local supers to import that.

Great content Steve and Ivana! I started watching your trips recently. In terms of cooking oil, the oil producing material usually do not have direct correlation to quality/impact to health. Typically peanut oil and palm oil are the most suitable for deep frying; soybean oil, and colza/rap oil are good for shallow frying, usually with pre heating requirements to get rid of the raw seed smell; most types of oil are good for stir frying, with the exception of some olive oil (depending on the manufacture process). That said, how people define a type of oil being good or bad to health can be reliant on how suitable it is to their cooking styles, which varies A LOT among countries and regions. In most regions where no specific types of oil is produced in close distance, the price mostly depends on how local people prefer to cook their food, the best suiting oil being more expensive (ofc taking consideration of transportation and storage costs).

As mentioned by others in comments, Chinese cuisines prefer stir fry and deep/shallow fry, I just wanna mention there’s a big part of oil used in Chinese kitchens where chefs toss oil in to the wok in middle or near the end of stir frying. The technique is called “bright oil”, indicates the brightness of colour when served in restaurants. This would also require the oil to have no distracting smell at raw, while certain types of oil bring to the dish some of its natural flavors at the same time. A good percentage of pro chefs have a preference of peanut oil when it comes to bright oil, i would assume peanut oil is popular for that reason too.

The reason you don't see a big meat and seafood section at a supermarket is because local people usually buy their meat and seafood at a wet market. Also, Macau actually has one of the highest per capita GDP in the world. In the sense, prices are very very good.

The MOP and HKD isnt actually 1:1, they just says that to get more money. because hkd is worth more than MOP so they can exchange HKD to MOP for around a 20% increase

The mystery fruit you'd touched is called "ginseng fruit" by the locals. It has a fresh mild taste like a cucumber and it's said to be really helpful for your digestive system. Speaking of the sections, depending on where you stand, every supermarket has different size and variety of sections. Some of them have butcher and fishmonger sections, but most of them don't (due to the limited space). But, you've guessed it, most locals prefer to buy fresh meat and fish from the wet markets. Finally, about your "no mustard" rant, I'm sorry to tell you that you'd gone to some local supermarkets where there's no mustard. You could try your luck at some other supermarkets, or go straight to some special supermarkets which lean more towards the foreigners (New Yaohan, 7th floor for example). Those "foreign" supermarkets are much more pricey, but has everything you want and mentioned in the video.

The correct rate of exchange is HKD 100 : MOP 103
@campbelllin3323 Жыл бұрын
Actually it is not accurate to say HKD and MOP are 1:1. It is true that MOP is pegged to HKD (which again is pegged to USD). However, the pegged rate is 1 HKD : 1.03 MOP. So you were to buy something more expensive like cell phones, clothes etc, you might as well use your credit card and ask them to charge you in MOP. A side note, large ticket sales in Macau like real estate, cars are only priced in HKD and locals have to pay in HKD.
