and why would a closed tank explode? It wouldn't. Accidents happen when the lid is open and when it's open there won't be an explosion - the flames will just burst out and that's that.

Full tank will not explode, empty tank also will not explode. What explodes are the fumes, not the gas itself and if the tank is full there is no space for fumes so it might start pouring out and catching on fire but not an explosion. Half full is the most dangerous, as it has the perfect mix of oxygen/fumes, quarter full is still dangerous but it will not generate enough fumes to cause a big explosion

The last one was clearly exaggerated with additional explosives, but in general, yeah, the point is correct...fuel vapors are more dangerous than fuel itself.

I share the same suspicion, I think it would be more interesting if they were more upfront about the details and maybe even had several versions of the empty take showing variations/failures to detonate in the movie-like way.

Empty tank wasn't true. If it was truly empty, meaning no fuel, no fumes, nothing, zero, it would have done nothing. So there had to be a small amount of fuel providing the fumes.

The only possible way for a fuel tank to have zero fumes is if there has never been gasoline in it This is experiment is done using real-world practicality. Your average Joe's empty fuel tank will have residual fumes inside.
