Not gonna lie, I expected more from a Chasing cars review. They're traditionally very good on the details, where this one seemed to be talking more about its place in the Cupra range, and its style, look, and feel. No mention on whether it has a frunk or an automatic tailgate, and never shows a clip of the boot or mentions boot space? Says the Torque figure hasn't been announced, as it's displayed on the screen... Is there a shade on that sunroof? Are the seats electric or manual? Was this review and the article on your website done some time ago and just published now due to some embargo? Because whilst pricing isn't announced yet, full specifications were announced a month ago with Australian WLTP figures (which don't match the figure provided here, possibly because the 21's are standard on the AWD VZ in Aus and not overseas?). Some things not mentioned here were differences between standard and VZ trim (which includes AWD, much of the interior, and a number of other things praised in this vid). The article on the site goes into more detail, but also contradicts the Australian specs previously released stating things like Matrix LEDs are standard across the range. Is this video and the article out of date at the time of release, do Chasing Cars have info others don't, or is some of it just... incorrect? It's also worth mentioning that the drum brake rear is paired with regenerative braking from a 210kw motor on the rear axle, so those drums aren't exactly doing all the work, even when braking hard. Yes, discs might be nicer but, on an Ev - and on the rear axle especially - the drums may be more than good enough. The article suggests the drums held up well during multiple short bursts of spirited driving. For something as important and fundamental as "the brakes might not work well after a while", I would have hoped for some actual first-hand experience when making that claim - after all isn't that what we watch these for? For the reviewers experience?

Fully agree. I've watched a lot of chasing cars reviews and this is one a big downgrade of review comprehensiveness; approaching the level of carsales or wheels. Didn't even show the boot, or boot space.

I agree it’s not a very good review… a bit jittery and effusive and forgetting how help consumers evaluate it as a daily driver… I suspect he’s just not prepared and winging it which gives the impression of arrogance. Actually he’s like new car salesman telling only how amazing it is…

We need Tom to test as many as he can. Recently I just don’t bother watching chasing cars anymore cuz none of them have the passions to cars like Tom does.

turning circle, what's the sound system like, do the seats fold flat...all these reviewers go on and on about how something drives but to me that's purely subjective. One persons mushy is another's smooth.

Thanks for the review - but no mention if it has: glass roof cover, VTL, close and lock button on tailgate, front "boot", android auto - apple carplay, boot size, wheel size, any annoying bings and bongs, interior and exterior colour options. I can remember drum brakes in the day - on wet days there was always some fading during braking. Not sure why VW would persist with them.

Yeah, if I was living outside Europe definitely. In Europe the base version goes for 46K€ and 569km WLTP range which is virtually the same as a Model Y

Cupra interiors are worse in real life. Having test drove recently the styling is sleek but quality doesn’t match up close… the styling isn’t to my liking it reminds me of transformers

The BYD Sealion 7 will murder this with AWD and 390kw with a back seat much bigger, better brakes, better value, great build quality and reliability and arguably better looking for less money. Glad we got the Seal Performance, was a no brainer as will the Shark and Sealion 7 when it makes it to our shores.

Cupra's introduction of the Tavascan to the Australian EV market indeed seems to be a strategic move to cater to consumers seeking a distinctive choice beyond the prevalent options. The Tavascan, with its bold design and packed features, positions itself as a sporty alternative to the more ubiquitous Tesla Model Y and various Chinese EVs

Drum brakes are a valid choice for an electric car. Electric cars benefit greatly from regenerative braking which largely remove the possibility of brake fade which is the main drawback of drums. On the plus side drums are cheaper to make, have more braking area and they limit emissions of brake dust.

There is a good reason for that. Drum brakes produce less friction when not applied and this benefits range. Also, EVs do not use their brakes much so any heat dissipation issues are largely moot. Had a look under the back of our top selling cars lately? Leaf springs and drum brakes.

As an owner of a Tesla and a Cupra I really hope this proves to be a good addition to the aus market. Price will need to come down though because it is not worth an entry BMW iX1 valuation.

How can you say "the build quality is better" after half an hour or whatever. You could say the finish looks good but build quality is a test which an opinion can only be formed over a long term. Sounds like you are being biased to the whole car based on a free holiday.

Build quality is a term that means different things to different people but our initial assessment is that this vehicle has good build quality. Like we always do, we’ll conduct further testing at a later date to see how the car holds up over the longer term but we wanted to provide our initial impressions now for those looking to place an order early on.

The European correspondent is a tad too effusive and overly complimentary. Lovely to call out the good but would be appreciated if calling out the daily frustrations too like no climate controls, lack of under thigh support in seats etc… just a little balance so consumers think about them when testing. Otherwise this is a bit like an advertorial from a VAG spokesman…

Even though I love Cupra, have a Seat Leon and Ateca and I'm waiting for the new Cupra Leon - I will never like these coffee-grinder electric boxes. And no, this silent Tavascan is not the heart or soul of Cupra. And Tesla? Don't make me laugh...

For 70k this brand will not survive in Australia. There are two types of people here. Those who buy fancy brand cars like Benz or BMW and those who don’t care about cars and drive Toyota or MG. Cupra is not cheap or premium but it seeks premium price…
