As a Texan, I am grateful KXAN posted this. Also as a Texan, I am embarrassed by this debate format. No audience and 15 seconds to respond??? This debate is so important for MILLIONS of people and it gets chopped up for media consumption. While everyone involved in this debate was Texan, this is a poor representation of the meaning of Texas.

And it was a one-sided victory for one candidate. Beto O'Rourke wiped the floor with the current governor. People choosing Abbott over Beto are just gullible at this point. Beto is clearly more intelligent, more honest, more compassionate, and has that "it" factor in leadership. Beto is a person who acts on behalf of the majority. Abbott literally said he ignores the majority of Texans in favor of policies that only the far-right extremists love because his "principles". Abbott's abortion stance of "no exception for rape or incest" sounds like it is from Saudi Arabia, Iran, or North Korea.

The cost of living has increased, as he points to electricity cost, and then says Teachers are underpaid this amount. Well, yeah! They both are below the National median average. Thank you for carrying this and allowing folks like me (who was at work during the debate) the chance to view later. That said, this format was unhelpful in informing voters on the content and character of these two candidates. The short answer period and lack of a true debate between the candidates, reduced this to a mad rush of sound bites and jabs.

Would have been better with just one moderator and much longer for debate before that hellacious dinging bell cut short any in depth debate on any topic. Actually, this "debate" raised more questions than answers. The quick answer format is totally unproductive in providing voters with any thoughtful solutions by either Abbott or O'Rourke. An important debate like this should allow more time devoted to it than what was allowed. Ridiculous and a waste of everyone's time - the candidates and the voters time both. Irritating to watch, irritating to listen too and totally irritating hearing that dam bell!! FAIL.

@@le6859 I believe not. My understanding is that in order to get Abbott to agree to a debate, they had to make major concessions, such as having no live audience. I believe the shorter time was on the part of Abbott’s campaign, to minimize damage, though ironically it arguably benefitted Beto, who was far better at making his points concise.

I agree. Of course even then there are many cynics including myself tbh, I would verify the verifier as well to make sure this is being as honestly as it possibly can. From what I gathered Abbott literally told the truth twice, that's it. And O'rourke said something that's "mostly" true once, everything else was factual and based. Hopefully Beto finaly got, and I quote him, his "s%&t" together, because I want him to win.

This is all circus to hide the fact that Blue States INTENTIONALLY forced Blue Voters into Red States. It might already be too late for Texas. The problem with Republicans is their “we accept everybody” stance. You shouldn’t accept people who think differently than you about life. If Texas doesn’t start passing laws that are reprehensible to people that would change their way of life, Texas will end up like Oregon. Here’s how you do it. Take ANY law that you would never want in your state, and you pass the exact opposite. For example, if you want to keep your Second Amendment Rights intact, pass mandatory firearm ownership, training, and safety certification laws. Maybe even pass mandatory militia service laws. Treat your Rights as a responsibility rather than merely an entitlement. With those laws, who do you think won’t move there? Blue Voters that afraid of guns. CRT? Pass laws that ban it’s implementation within government agencies and companies that accept government contracts. You HAVE to treat your State/county/city/neighborhood/block like it’s your house. Live with people you agree with, and pass laws that repel unwanted citizens so that they cannot move in and vote your way of life out of existence. The NEXT thing you do is conduct missions into slums to find people who just want a crime free life for their families. Then, you bring them to your communities so they can see the truth of your lifestyle. If you don’t, then they will constantly vote Blue while breeding more into those broken systems to dilute your national votes. Leave Democrat areas full of violent criminals while you save and convert the victims in those areas.

Families of murdered children in Uvalde traveled hundreds of miles to attend the debate in Edinburg which Abbott knew were coming. He deliberately banned them from the debate. His disrespectful attitude towards the family members was like a slap in the face and showed that he doesn't give a damn . What is he afraid of ? Republicans like Abbott need to go . It takes a special brand of brain damage to think that voting in Beto as governor wouldn't be a massive disaster. Texas has been the fastest growing state in the country, and by far the most successful state in the last two decades in terms of growth, budget balance, freedom, and low taxes. IMAGINE the mental state you would have to be in to look across the country at states with governments like the one Beto wants to implement, and think "yea this will be much better".

They need to hire cross-examination lawyers to craft the questions. Direct questions are so easy to avoid answering. They need to learn how to ask questions that squeeze information out bit by bit.

@@chriskingery3555 There would not have been any debates if Abbott had gotten his way. Beto coaxed him into one. Ask yourself why Abbott wanted none and then when there was one put forth... no audience. That's the mark of a dictator. He doesn't want to be held accountable to the voters. Other GOP candidates and incumbents have acted similarly.

They had to identify them by the shoes they wore and Abbott turned around and signed a law that allowed everyone to carry without a permit anywhere! We have had men come in to visit at our church with 45's in their pockets!!! It's crazy!

The most important question NEVER asked that should be put to every politician, both Democrat and Republican alike, is, "If you're taking millions of dollars from corporations and special interest groups, why in the world would we believe you're going to serve your constituents and not them?" Last I checked, most people work for whoever is paying them, and that governor salary from the state looks like chump change compared to what the corporations and special interest groups are dumping in their pockets.

@One Two Transparency is great, but I want the money out of politics. The Supreme Court legalized bribery, and we're all far worse off for it.
