More 'Tech Talks' please!! I found this to be very interesting. Reminds me in the 80s when the AM stations in SoCal were going stereo without agreeing on a standard. C-Quam and something else. Is that still a thing?

I don't think anyone is still using any AM stereo anymore. Some stations may still have it in the racks but it's bypassed. Cool, maybe I'll do more!

Shango066 channel featured an AM stereo station a few weeks ago with a tour as well and c quam explanation from the station engineer.Station I think was in the Midwest, Shango is from So Cal area, restores old TV's and radios.C Quam theory explanation is interesting.

Cquam was made the official analog AM stereo standard by the FCC in 1993, I believe, so yes, it is the AM stereo system the FCC finally chose. But, they waited so long to make a decision that no one was interested, so very few AM stations transmit in Cquam today. The major competitor, Leonard Khan's Independent Side Band system, ultimately lost, but he turned it into PowerSide mono. I don't' know if there are any AM stations broadcasting PowerSide at this time. An important aspect of radio technologies is the business model. Car manufacturers have been putting analog AM/FM radios in cars for years. There are no licensing fees for the car manufacturer or subscription fees for the listener. If anything, HD is in competition with satellite radio. With HD, the car manufacturer pays a licensing fee to include HD radio technology, but it's free to the listener. I'm not sure if this is still the situation, but at one time the satellite company was paying auto manufacturers to put the satellite receivers in cars. but they make their money from subscription fees. For a while, they were putting both HD and Satellite into cars, but since there's really not much consumer demand for either, I think they gave up on HD since it was an extra licensing cost in building the car. My $.02.

This should have been considered about ten years ago. Government always waits until it's almost too late, then it acts. AM stereo could have worked but the FCC screwed it up by not settling on one system. When they did, it was a dead issue. BTW Europe uses DAB+, not DRM. DRM is used in India and I think Pakistan. I hear it (DRM) is working rather well. there. Of course, we'll never get it. Thanks for a thoughtful piece.

Oops! For some reason, I was thinking DRM was Europe. Thanks for the clarification!

I’ll admit as a radio nerd I was super excited in the early 2010s about HD radio but I know here in Houston it’s pretty much just gone by the wayside and it’s just a bunch of originating stations for translators that feature religious or ethnic programming.

A long time ago, some government entity required TV sets to pick up the UHF channels. Now I can see the possibility of requiring the digital signals in AM and FM to be picked up also. If you buy a radio that doesn't have it, you are missing out on stations broadcast locally. I also remember when the FCC required the termination of analog TV stations. Why not implement this rule for AM and FM? I have a tuner that can pick up all these stations. It is a Sangean HDT 20, and it works really well to pick up all the subchannels that analog can't provide. If AM stations were required to give both analog and digital signals, the whole idea of providing digital AM would be accelerated. I'm afraid that if the government doesn't step in, we won't have much digital AM for a long time.

I think the bigger issue for AM stations is that the land the towers are on end up being worth far more than the station itself. So greedy owners sell the land to developers for homes that no one can afford and close the station.

No questions yet, but I am a long time analog radio fan in Silverado, just appreciating all I learn while enjoying your recent videos. (I'm also glued to your stream when my canyon is on fire, but that's another story.) Thanks for sharing!

for a start the emergency station would have to continue to Similcast Analogue as well as Digital signal for the foreseeable future because if have no Cellular services or the network goes Down you have no information as what you should do
@TheBroadcastEngineer
@TheBroadcastEngineer 3 жыл бұрын
That’s the discussion and controversy. It’s not practical from a technical standpoint to switch back to analog “in an emergency.” It would be the new permanent transmission mode for those stations.

@@TheBroadcastEngineer well if the FCC Mandates that Station is an Primery Emergency Station then they would to make it a Simulcast Station AM and Digital

As of now, I doubt any LP1 or LP2 stations would be considering all digital AM. Maybe in the future...

You said "all those listeners will leave when you shut off your analog signal." That assumes anyone is listening to the analog signal in the first place. In my town, there are 10 AM signals in the immediate area, give or take. I suspect maybe three of them show up in the ratings. Two of those three stations have FM translators, and all of them stream. The other stations are just keeping their broadcast towers warm... they have little to no listeners. It's like turning on a brand new station from scratch. You'd have to get people to turn over, because they're not on the AM band anyway. (They're barely on the FM band!) I've heard videos here on KZbin on pure digital AM and WOW. You're technically right that it's not CD quality, but for your average listener it is "perfect." Plus, any current HD radio can pick it up; they don't have to do anything or upgrade their radios. I'm hearing about 30% of the cars and trucks on the road have HD radios, so they're already ready to listen. Plus, hybrid AM sounds so AWFUL. Even my wife, who is no audiophile, said, "what's wrong with that station?" I explained it was limited bandwidth and she said, "it sounds bad... different, but still bad." Analog AM may be the most fool-proof way to get out emergency information, but if you're going to run a business, you want to go all-digital AM. (We didn't even talk bout coverage area... wow!!!)

Good points. But if those stations didn't have listeners and advertisers to pay the bills, they'd be off the air already. There's always someone who wants to listen. In my previous job, I put together a streaming station of some of the late 70's early 80's Jesus People music that the church owned, and there was a consistent 30-50 people listening at all hours of the day. And this was for something that wasn't being promoted at all.

DRM is going to be used in India on the AM frequencies, no plans in EU I've heard of.

They could set a transition period of 10 to 15 years. If possible, broadcasters could overlap/simulcast digital and analog signals (kinda like how FM currently has digital and analog at the same time). And once the cut-off date comes, switch to digital-only. If possible, they could make a digital converter that plugs into the earphone jack (I'm sure China could pump out tens of millions of these in no time). This would be akin to the digital converter boxes for the digital TV switch back in 2009. Another option is to designate some channels/frequencies as analog-only to be set aside ONLY for emergency broadcasts. This would be done to keep the millions of analog devices relevant. Or simply make all digital AM receivers capable of receiving analog signals. I think that after 20 years, things could switch to all-digital and only-digital. On one hand, i am happy to see that AM broadcast radio is getting a shot of life. On the other hand, i am sad that thousands of antique radios (20 to 100 years old) will suddenly become nothing more than cool-looking furniture pieces or decorations on a desk. But that's life. We no longer drive around with 8-track or cassette players in our cars or watch VHS movies at home so i guess this will be another inevitability of technological progress. We have to take the bad with the good.

Wouldn't be too hard to just tack something on to them to convert the signal back the analog AM.

If AM radio goes digital, they should also use digital compression to transmit the signal. That way you can get higher quality in much less bandwidth.
@TheBroadcastEngineer
@TheBroadcastEngineer Жыл бұрын
They use a form of AAC for compression. However, there isn’t much bandwidth available for data.

I was recently in the UK, and they had DAB+ digital radio. What was interesting was that no matter where I was in the country, I never lost the signal. What is the difference between HD Radio and DAB+?
@TheBroadcastEngineer
@TheBroadcastEngineer 8 ай бұрын
DAB and HD are using different schemes to transmit their data. Beyond that I haven’t really looked too deep into it. But now that you’ve asked, I’m interested.

Hiya, just found your channel. We have similar problems with DAB+ (initially intended to be the successor to FM). There's that delay of around 6 seconds to the analog signal. So, why not produce the whole program, say, ten seconds in advance in order to have both signal chains in sync? BTW: What's that music bed called you used in this vid?
@TheBroadcastEngineer
@TheBroadcastEngineer 9 ай бұрын
Welcome to the channel! Yes, HD Radio here in the US has that delay. You have to delay the analog audio to match up with the digital audio. There are devices that allow you to do that, and will even monitor the station and make automatic adjustments should the timing change. The music I use is from a service called Epidemic Sound. They have tons of music in all sorts of genres.
