Almost forgot how strong Cash was at the net, and his pure athleticism on those overheads. He seemed to serve particularly well during the '87 Championship. Great viewing, thanks for the upload!

If cash would have really worked on his ground strokes he would have won about 3-5 slams? He reached the finals at Australia & played 5 tough sets. He was so good at the net and volleying he slightly neglected the overall game? Still won 87 Wimbledon vs lendl .

I think his main problem was that he had quite a few injuries, which led to major setbacks in his career..

If Cash wasn't crippled by knee injuries he would have been in the same sphere as Edberg. In many ways he was better. Power, serve, athleticism.

Totally agree. He could have been an all-time great. Back, knee Achilles. Just sad.

In no way was he a better athlete than Edberg. Edberg had a slightly better serve, better return, backhand and backhand volley, Cash had the better forehand and forehand volley. Overhead about even.

Connors had no energy after playing 3 consecutive days. Also he was clean no doping I am sure if he had sufficient rest he would have won this semi and the final By the way a real genuine kind man off court I was fortunate to have spoken to him in montecito California

That’s not really being fair to cash who was playing unbelievably well that year 1987- also went onto trounce Ivan Lendl in 3 straight sets in the final! When he was Injury free and on form, Pat Cash was one of the greatest Australian champions ever….great movement around the court, and his volleying skills were comparable to McEnroe’s and Edberg, plus he was a Superb Athlete!!

@@kingarthurusatenniscoach1415 Nope, I live in Europe . Been following tennis since '70 s, played tennis , still playing these days and used to 'teach ' or better to follow a team of kids from the psycologic side (sport psychology- until 2010). 'Coulda woulda shoulda' is Sampras favourite motto and I lke it. With regard to Connors as kind mann off the court , well...I like him a lot (for his take no prisoners/ attitude on court) but his/our behaviour on court IS ALWAYS the reflex of his/ our life attitude and on court I can still remember ' cancellation mark' US open 1977 against Barazzutti and most of all , his love story with C Evert - when he wanted Evert to stop to play professional tennis (when she was on top of the women rank)' because in a traditional marriage one of the 2 must stay at home ' and most of all for being so disrespectful towards her when he put on his book/autobiography ('outsider,' I got it) that She had an abortion when they were together without asking the permission to her - which put their current relationship on a strain

@@kingarthurusatenniscoach1415 Anyway , it is true that at the time Connors was going for his 35th birthday but do not forget that Cash - 22 at the time and also injure prone - was one of the best player in the world on grass -Becker , MC enroe, maybe - MAYBE - EDberg at that time and then him . This is also the reason why he won that year - He was so much better than Lendl in the final match
@PaulJohnson-yw9gi Жыл бұрын
Connors so flat here; he'd played three tough matches in three days and had nothing left. Connors was 35 then and past his best, though he really should have gone on and won it. I'll stand correction but from memory I don't think Cash ever beat him again. These days, 35 is nothing; just ask Rafa, Roger and Novak.
@travb7058 ай бұрын
Every time Connor’s made a deep run in his 30s, media would fall all over themselves raving about the ageless wonder. Then when he got beat, it was the excuses about how he ran out of gas after a tough draw. The opponent never seemed to deserve credit and rarely received it from Connors. Truth is, Connors was owned by Borg and McEnroe in his prime. The best thing that happened to him was the retirement of Borg and Mac’s loss of motivation. He stuck around, won three post-Borg majors and enjoyed endless curtain calls.
