John Barratt commentating and making an interesting comment at 01:47 - the courts at the Australian Open back then when it was held at Kooyong were weird. They were built on a slope to assist with drainage and you were hitting the ball uphill from one end, downhill from the other. As John Barratt said, it really seemed to disturb a lot of good servers. It may well go some way to explain why both Boris Becker and John McEnroe never really performed well when the Australian Open was held at Kooyong.

Cash’s volley throughout 1987 was by far the best in the history of this beautiful sport, which used to be more sober and technically elegant back then.

Pues en los tiempos que corren, Edberg no destacaría, sería un jugador obsoleto. Impresionantemente pobre el tenis de los 80. Becker tampoco sería un jugador destacado hoy.

@@rushrush1209That has nothing to do with it. A good volleyer will withstand power without much trouble. Volleying has become a lost art in today's game, that's why we don't see it anymore.

As an aussie and fan, it was interesting that after this loss, a leading magazine here was incredibly positive and praized Cash's form and performance during that years AO. The author of the article ( cant remember their name ) went on to say that Cash will likely go on " to win this years Wimbledon" . Thought it was a bold statement at thst time - but sure enough , Cash blitzt the field at the 1987 Championships, soundly beating Lendl in the final

@@yoharlemmusic4411 Well, it was a diferent style, definetely a trend in those days, although there were Legendary players (Lendl the most notable) who never considered playing like that. But remember, that many of the most representative champions of serve & volley were great base line players as well. Becker, Edberg, Sampras later on. A great example is the Becker-Sampras classic 1995 final

Classic serve-and-volley tennis of a high order, no doubt. Edberg is surely one of the greatest players ever in that category. Didn't Pat win Wimbledon that year, beating Lendl? If so, he had a truly great year. Looks a little like a young Mel Gibson.

Not really. A good volleyer will be able to play S&V on any service. That being said, grasscourts are indeed the natural habitat for serve and volley players.
