Majority of Filipinos do not use the English language at the level she's functioning in. The reason she's well-known in the journalism/writers sphere is that she's using her efforts with the biggest tool she has and that is the English language. She has achieved a lot in her field and won many awards, one of which is a Nobel Prize. Meanwhile, Filipinos haven't changed, still possessing a defeatist attitude. This shows in the decisions they make in their lives such as deciding to live in the slums for years and years. Many have made up their mind that their situation in the city is permanent and being careless about having children they cannot support. They have to be shown examples that apply to them and goals that they can see themselves achieving. Using English as a language is nice but it should be given a much lower importance in order for Filipinos to change for the better.
