That was super interesting Nick, living in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia I used to be a 4wd tour driver so I really appreciate the work you have put into your beastie. And yes on trips north into the deserts we have been caught out, its not like help is anywhere close, you have to be self sufficient and capable of thinking outside the square. You've inspired me to start doing a bit to my old Discovery 2. Already has good suspension with a small lift. Decent tyres because of where I live is a given, just the driveway is 2 km of clay track so when it rains its fun. Thanks for doing this video, very enjoyable and inspiring.

You brought up a good point about buying the Sprinter and other conversions. I was looking at them at first but got a tent shell from GFC in Montana on top of my 4-Runner instead. I carry a Jackery portable generator with solar panels. It allows me to plug in my small 600w microwave for heating food and drinks. With all my junk in the 4-Runner I still get the same gas mileage I did before the tent and other stuff was installed. Almost 19mpg with the V-6.

@@NickPage, my wife & I have talked about those vans for down the road (as in, when we get too old to get in and out of this mini camper) - but they are so limiting. I love to push into the backcountry (although, not as far as you, apparently), and those vans just won't do it. Plus, they are so danged expensive.

I went through it quickly! The solar panel on top of your pop up sleeping trunk is brilliant. One thought to the draws: why do you not use one as a kitchen with a gas cooking station and a cutting board for cooking. That was just one thought that crossed my mind. Overall I love it. Ice and easy to handle!
@NickPage2 жыл бұрын
It is crossed my mind! But this vehicle is my daily driver which means that what is in those drawers change from time to time based on if I’m on a trip or not. Or if I will be doing any camping or not so I don’t want anything too “ built in”
@terrylong84652 жыл бұрын
Excellent rig! I was looking at the Colorado w/diesel a while back. I'm getting old and can't crawl around much anymore (such as getting on the tailgate then climbing up a ladder to get into the tent) so I went with a small overland trailer (sort of like a teardrop). My rig is not as "mobile" as yours but like I said I'm on the older side and with the trailer it's much easier to get into and out of than a RTT. I'm exploring the possibilities of getting a Colorado and putting a small slide in camper such as the 4WheelDrive. It still won't be as compact and mobile as your set up but again...my age plays into it. Again, nice rig!

I’ve looked forward to this video since watching your first adventure in the snow with the new rig. You are so right, these projects are never really done, but this is pretty well set. Love it and wish I’d had this in my younger years. Having reached the big six-oh!, I decided to give up the extra off road capability for the comfort of the full size Ford Transit van which I’ve just “completed” the conversion as photo road lounge. Not to rub salt in the wound, but, my 1 ton dually extended with all the amenities of home still gets 16 mpg out of its 3.5 liter twin turbo eco-boost (think “Raptor” power in their largest van). I’m sure that mpg will take a big hit when I pull a Jeep to get out to the remote spots. Keep the updates coming.
@Luigi132 жыл бұрын
There are people that sold their home for life on the road and your truck definitely qualifies for that. Good investment Nick it should last you a very long time.
@WJMPhotography2 жыл бұрын
So many cool things about your rig, but my favorites are your awning (so cool!) your tire table and that light bar. I had an LED lightbar on my FJ, but the whine that thing would make from the air moving under it was unbearable, so I had to take it down. Yours is flush down on your roof and I would imagine it doesn’t make any noise at all. Brilliant set up. Between your rooftop tent, the solar panels, your winch, and everything you have in the back of the truck, you definitely look prepared for whatever comes your way while you are out there. Thanks for sharing this with us!

I own a 2018 Cajun red gasser and I love the ZR2 platform. That front locker really is easy mode. I like being able to select which gear I am in while in 4L by using the shifter up and down buttons. The leaf springs squeak a bit but not a huge deal. I am happy I upgraded the headlights from stock, makes a huge difference and looks more modern. I have added most of the underbody armor from the Bison, next will be the steel drive shaft. I overland alone and need my rig to be as close to bulletproof as possible.

Thanks Nick The forever struggle between the Van and the truck !!! I have changed my mind so many times. My purpose is mainly for wildlife and landscape photography but also may want to get out in it for extended periods of time as a (home) The challenges of storage come into play but 4 x 4 is definitely the most important .I don't want to be at the rest stops will all the other folks. Always compromises for either set ups but I think the truck is the way to go. You got me thinking now about getting the full size truck. Very well thought out. I do alot of art shows so I needed a van. This is my 2nd Sprinter van so the majority of what I invested in the original van was designed so it could be removed and added to the new van. Nice job. I just sold an Magiolini Air Top that was on my Rubicon. If I'd had this setup, I'd still be running it. Thinking about an AWD Transit if I can find one that's 3-6 years old - I'm at the point where I don't really need all the off capatility, since I'd only use it if I were in a group. At my age, self-recovery is maybe a bit too risky, and using an InReach to call for help is likely to be expensive - better if I stick to backroads and logging roads.
@keithdraycott2 жыл бұрын
Very nice rig. Because we aren't planning on doing any off-roading, we went for the Van conversion option. I had the same thought about what happens when we trade the van in and have designed everything except walls, floor, ceiling and insulation to be easily removable with just a few bolts and screws.
