I had a first gen. Whirlpool Cabrio machine with the central agitator (which never seemed to be offered in high numbers). It had a very similar washing action to this machine. Very effective and always got our clothes clean. It lasted about 13 years before we had to replace it.

Was it direct drive using an inverter DD motor? I know when Whirlpool took a 20% stake in Fisher & Paykel in New Zealand, WP started implementing the use of F&P SmartDrive motors when the original DD motor patent was still valid. It might have been a later Cabrio, my memory is sketchy lol Anyway for some reason the deal went to sh!t, the New Zealand government refused to bail out F&P, and Haier became a 100% stakeholder. As a NZ'er and an appliance fan the loss of a New Zealand icon was sad for me. At least Haier have allowed Fisher and Paykel in New Zealand to remain a somewhat seperate R&D entity rather than just rebadging original Haier product.

KENMORE with model number starting with 106 or 110 ARE WHIRLPOOL as is MAYTAG. Sears doesn't build anything themselves. First three digits before decimal indicates manufacturer if KENMORE products.

This machine does a great job cleaning (similar to the direct drive predecessor). The issue is that it still has cheap VMW parts and will likely be headed for the scrapyard after the mfg warranty runs out due to insane Whirlpool parts pricing and lack of durability of the parts. This machine is probably the best option for cleaning capability, but plan on replacing it after 5 years (with a few break downs during that time frame) in my opinion.

i would agree, because i have this exact machine. After 1 year, nothing but problems. Trans/ motor replaced took 6 weeks. Now 2 more parts to replace. Piece of Garbage.

I repair appliances. This Maytag is virtually identical mechanically to the less pricey AMANA tested in another video. Same motor, "Splutch" (whirlpool clutch mechanism that replaces a transmission) actuator and interchangable agitator. May tsh may have more or longer cycles achieved by a different control board and has a heavier cabinet.

It's identical also to the affordable Kenmore washer my family uses we replaced it once with the same model because the part that holds the suspension arm up broke on the old one so it would go off balance all the time but despite how cheap it is it still cleans better than most high priced he washers but if this one dies soon we're gonna try to find a old school DD washer

I have this and its a beast from hell. Went from a Consumer Reports "best" LG HE washer which took well over an hour to not clean the clothes to this heap which cleans like crazy in 30 minute cycles. Laundry day went from a 2 day process to an afternoon or 1 day at worst. Only downsides I see are it doesn't spin like hell as the modern HE washers do, so clothes are not as dry coming out and you really need to thin out the fabric softener (like they tell you to) as if you use it full strength, it won't spin out of the cup all the way and you might end up with a few blue softener drips on your clothes. Great video and PLEASE do the "ketchup test" with this!

This would be the washer I would buy when and if the Miele 4842 dies. That's like a Bullet Proof Washer by today's standards. it is 2022, we have had this exact washer since March 2019. it worked great for 1 year. Then the motor/ trans went out. took 6 weeks to get fixed, due to the unavailability of parts. Then had to call 1 month later, have to have 2 more parts replaced, actuator, and motor something. So we are waiting again. The repairman, was not familiar with the machine, so had to call tech on his phone. Diagnose it. Jeez, I even had to supply a bit part to open the machine, because the repairman did not have that screwdriver bit. He said to call Maytag and complain about how these machines DON'T hold up. What a cluster ------. Waiting 6 weeks is ridiculous, sending a repairman that is NOT trained is another. Nice guy, but not trained sufficiently.

This clearly shows how the lack of a tub break can cripple even the strongest agitation. Now, while I would not do 10 in a WP Direct drive it would not have choked like this did. The machine would have struggled a bit but still kept agitating because it could not transfer that motion to the drum.

This machine is incredible. It does what it was built for. Turn over is fantastic. One of the very few toploader I'll consider buying. I've said it before, the only thing this washer needs is a "Quick Wash" cycle that will do small loads. Maybe you can make a recommendation to the manufacturer about that. Thanks again Eugene. My Beloved 1992 SQ clone Amana washer is slowly dying. Too bad it can't get serviced due to parts not available. Design was almost exactly like a SQ and I think they actually made this washer for Amana back then just with a different transmission which is the part that is dying. I love the fill options and the temperature options on my old washer. I could manually set any water level and also the temperature for wash and rinse. Three levels of agitation. Normal, Permapress,/Knits, and Delicates. What else does one need? I looked at this new Commercial Maytag washer last night. It looks very cheaply made at least the exterior metal and over all outside fit. The price of this unit is too high in my opinion. I would say if it was priced in the $500 - $600 range that would be perfect. The wash tub seemed very flimsy and thin. Plus it sloshes around loosely. The one I saw barely had any drain holes in it? It has two load levels full or half and only half on Norma/small load. I don't know if I want this machine or not though the reviews by Gene and other owners seem positive. The videos show great turn over but the machine sounds like it is going to tear itself apart! The retailer store I went to said it is a good washer and they sell a lot of them but they also sell lots of SQ's as well. They say most are going with the new SQ design with the fixed agitator/tub or (Perfect Wash) They claim the SQ is far better machine per build quality and also if loaded correctly will provide as good of a job cleaning as the Commercial Maytag. Too bad Gene doesn't live in Utah I would hire him to rebuild my old Amana. He is a true asset to the Appliance Community.

Question.... why does this washer not fill-up all the way to the top of the stainless-steel tub? On older model washers, the little screw on the pressure-switch could be adjusted to increase the water fill amount.

8 of those big towels is good for any TL. I wouldn't try more even in a Direct Drive or a 26 gallon Lady K with DAA. 11 of that size is the max I will do in my SQ FL.

Actually, it was still turning over the load with the 10 beach towels in the load. 8 beach towels is better still for this machine. But this is a Commercial Maytag. If there’s any machine at all that could take 10 beach towels in an entire wash load, it would be this one (an old school Speed Queen aside). Try this same wash load in an older pre 2018 Speed Queen and see won’t it get that load clean as well. -Charles-

No such thing as a Neptune top loader. Neptune was the FL washer that bankrupted MAYTAG as 9 years worth were recalled in a Federal class action lawsuit in 1997. MAYTAG is now a WHIRLPOOL brand since 1999. Atlantis was the high end top loader MAYTAG.

I have a aeg front loader with a 10kg wash load and it washed 10 bath towels and spun them at 1800rpm with no fuss and I had perfect wash results. Goes to show the great American top loader washer is crap

@@patcola7335 A top loader wears clothes out far quicker than a front loader and due to there rough agitation clothes do not come out clean, In UK a top loader is rated at the bottom of cleaning efficiancy and also for economy and they have the worst spin efficiancy. My AEG has a spin speed of 1800rpm which heavy bath towels are damp dry after the full spin cycle and I never have to use bleach to make them white, as they have a long wash at 60'c, When the weather is good I can have the pleasure of hanging out my laundry to dry which dries with a fresh smell, and also in bad weather I have a new heatpump dryer which costs pennies to run also, but I tend to let nature dry my laundry as its free and everything smells better

@@alextilson5809 Our top loaders for decades outscored front loaders for cleaning ability over here. Clothes were made better and you still have the cushioning of the water itself. So for 73 years since the first top load automatic washers came out we have been doing it all wrong..hmm... Manufacturers got good at making smooth agitators causing as little damage as possible. You folks and your precious front loaders. Yet here you are watching an AMERICAN top load agitator washer doing its thing. It's only in the last 23 years that front loaders are now a thing when we had them all along. I have both a front loader and top loader which I won't have either for long. Anyway the front loader doesn't clean any better than the top load washer I have . The front loader's strengths are it's cavernous tub and spin cycles. Other than that it's not the wash day miracle some of the front load camp make them out to be.

@@alextilson5809 Alex did you ever use a top loader ? You are entitled to your opinion but don't be disingenuous. Top loaders have been used by a large portion of the globe since the first automatics came out after the war. To say they don't clean is laughable. Even our testing agency Consumers Union in the U.S. showed from their testing that front loaders didn't do quite as well as agitator top loaders. The front loaders removed more heavy dirt and sand because their drums were perforated while most top loaders in the 1950s and 60s were still using a solid tub...except for Whirlpool/Kenmore. Anyway I don't lose sleep over this stuff. Efficiency is also one's time. Using more water helps cut down cycle time also. Easier for dirt to be flushed away. The new 'high efficiency's top loaders aren't great that's for sure but the old "water hogs" were the best.

I have a 25 year old Maytag and do you see how it is twisting the towels and tangling them up. You definitely had it overloaded they need to be able to move freely in there. It is hard on your belts and motor to work that hard. I was letting my daughter do washing and she would pack it too tight because she didn’t want to do multiple loads because she was impatient but I had to scold her because it’s too hard on the machine. They are well made but don’t push the limit unless you want to break it. That has a strange change of rhythm. .

KENMORE brand is no longer owned by SEARS. MOST KENMORE washers and dryers are now made by LG. The first three digits of KENMORE appliances indicate the manufacturer. 106 or 110 are Whirlpool.

What gets me is this washes like a DD without the transmission. Even though this is the VMW platform this machine performs better than them all it seems. More power and capacity. Whirlpool proved by this machine that the VMW design can perform like old school machines. Why they aren't making a whole line of these I can't figure out . If they know this is what a lot of Americans want then what is the holdup on more production of these machines with more features and cycle options ? Those DD washers with the one piece spiral agitators with hardly any fins on the base is pointless. Now they have a whopping 6.0 cu .ft model with an agitator and those shallow base vanes.

Probably an override on the lock, or this may use older technology that allowed for adding items mid wash. I miss that era.

Maytag used a loop hole to get a real washing machine to the public they slapped the word "commercial" to it, the EPA regulation makes regular washers worthless.

Cesar Blanco: It can do a partial spin-drain after neutral draining 4 or 5 inches of water. The one washer the Speed Queen TR SERIES , THE TR3,TR5,and the TR7 models. I've seen videos of these top loading machines in action. I have the 2018 Speed Queen TR5 top loader.

IF the pump is strong enough then yes, but some HE pumps can't pump fast enough. But generally neutral drains are less wear on the motor and gear case, So when the mechanism allows for that it's better for the machine.

ALL the women (& men) in our family purposely/slightly "underload" their washers in the interest of clean laundry & the in the interest of the longevity of the washing-machine. The people in our family have either the Speed Queen "classic" model washers or the Maytag "commercial" washer that's shown in this video.

I have a MVWP575GW barely 1 year and broke, won't agitate. It spins, but will not agitate and made a clanking noise before it gave up. This video of overloading is so lame, everywhere else, people are reporting NOT to overload because of a weak transmission (has a belt drive) all plastic.

MAYTAG Centennial, Bravos and other WHIRLPOOL built TL washers are all mechanically similar and available with the top agitator or the clothes mover in the bottom.

👋 I'm wondering why you load the machine by wrapping items around the agitator. I've always had better results by dropping straight in. Seems this machine would benefit from an extra fill or a full sensor to remove stress from overloading. Or is this an hE /low fill machine? I've recommended the commercial Maytag in place of the 2018 SQ in a cleaning group, but I'm now second guessing my original impression of this machine. Is the noise level stressing the difficulty with this load, forewarning of lesser quality parts, or is this normal? Not to be that guy..... I despise what Obama politics removed from our quality machines. I want to start a " give us back our water and machines" movement....

Why do americans have these toploaders?... never understood how they can be better than a frontloader? Can you maybe explain what the benefits of a toploader are compared to a frontloader? Btw where i live you can’t even find toploaders besides the very old used ones from the 60s.

I hate front loaders. They don't last. My Maytag top loader set is well over 10 years old.

@@holdenvtseries2274 how can a toploader use less water than a front loader? My front loader takes maybe 10L of water. The toploader that i had once took like 40L to fill. Also i had to bend over the whole machine and dip my head into it to grab stuff from the buttom. And no mine doesn’t take power when “off” british outlets have a on/off switch that you turn off after use to prevent accidents, same goes for the water outlet. And about the washing time… i have a “quick” program that takes 15 min.

A decent machine, but come on machine, work harder and more aggressive on clothes by speeding up agitation like on older machine so it would clean better. Is there a setting to do that?
