I have a machine very similar to this, from back when the Orbitals were still using the similar tub style to the Pitmans before the Dependable Care series came out. These styles of Maytags are around 30 years old by now, so it's good to see that some of them are still mint like this one. Great work! 👍

Nice. I saw a similar Maytag washer at an estate sale, but someone had already grabbed the dryer. The washer had the wonderful aquamarine agitator with the lint filter in it. It looks like your machine here might have a filter in it, too. If so, you gotta show us how much lint and hair and junk it collected! I still want to find the guys who decided to discontinue lint filters in the washers. 🤬

I’m gonna call this particular series a 1990. I still have the (Montgomery Ward) brochure and service manual on these. These were only made for a few years before graduating to the larger lid opening and the 12 vane agitator around 1993 - 1994. Personally, while I love the white tub and the white shark fin agitator, I do believe that all this tub indexing caused by the orbital wears out the brake package prematurely. That said, I still believe that the series before the orbital trumps these and all future models in the reliability category. I’d still love to have this matching set. Maybe in almond. 😎
@peterh5485 Жыл бұрын
This agitator was originally called “Power Fin 12”. 4 shark fins on the barrel, 4 large flexible fins and 4 small auxiliary fins on the skirt. The very first ones were aqua, then changed to white. Later, the filter was removed, the barrel extension was lengthen, and the extra tiny vanes added to the barrel.

This looks like my old washing machine and very well could be my old one, since I'm just down the road from you. Got rid of it in 2016 after the transmission gasket failed, and fried the transmission. It started smoking and stuff. Bought a new, at the time, Whirlpool Cabrio WTW7300DW and haven't had any issues other than a small rust spot. The machine gets clothes clean, but the cycles are longer. Paid $516, with tax. We still have the matching dryer for this washing machine, and that always works perfectly. I just wish that this washing machine had a bigger tub, as it filled up fast.

The machine you have has the nylon gears with the round counter weight on the transmission. The noise you hear is the agitator not tightened up as it gets loose. The screw on the bottom just needs tightened to the shaft.

I have a large lid Maytag Commercial Quality set that I paid $501.44 for and it’s still cleaning very well. I agree that the orbital is not my favorite type of wash. It does have the screw type agitation and turnover is quite noticeable. I like the old ones much better before they made the Turquoise agitator and the full half orbit really cleaned clothes.

@@jeromedavis8575 as a whole the company was doing things that honestly ate itself to death. This all started in 1986! Developing new divisions buying up companies that took money and focus away from the products by putting them under the Maycor umbrella and the high union costs that sent jobs to Mexico etc etc and serious CEO mismanagement etc etc. I live 20 miles away from the Maytag laundry plant in Newton, IA. All this was producing daily local news reporting events on an almost daily basis until Maytag went out of business. We saw the reliability of the laundry products begin by the end of 80’s. Quality control was getting pretty lacks it was a mess. The few machines from this particular machines era that have survived is a miracle actually. It was greed on all levels that killed the Maytag Corp.

This transmission in this machine was not a hit in terms of its agitation performance. The orbital transmission was a cost cutting measure in terms of materials and in weight reduction, which adds to the cost of shipping these machines. Keeping costs under control was a big issue as these machines all because of weight were quite costly to build and ship! They began pushing hard on the Norge based products as Maytag Performa’s, as they were much cheaper to build and they did perform decently. Magic Chief in MayCors’ lineup was another one we sold plenty of at the time with a wash stroke of 210 degrees.
