Harness racer here :) I would not reccomend trotting/racing/training/etc on asphalt! It can damage the horses legs and especially hooves. (And if it falls down there's less chance of returning to this type of trot ever again. The horses legs will be damaged from the fall since they probably will get scrapes from the asphalt. Horse might not even make it out alive in the worst case scenario.) Don't take this video as advice!!

Those are referred to as "Indiana Pants". They keep Pacers (which is what this horse is) in gait. Standardbreds come in two types, Trotters (diagonal legs moving in unison) and Pacers (legs on the same side of the body moving in unison). The idiot driving it deserves to be horsewhipped to an inch of his idiot life. Driving at full speed ON A PAVED ROAD is one sure fire way to cripple a horse for life or injure it so badly that it will have to be euthanized.

The fact that these horses (North American Standardbreds) are hobbled and forced to pace on an asphalt surface makes their breaks far more dangerous, because they will slip and slide and possible fall down. Build a frigging stone dust racetrack for chrissakes.
