Part 31! 1968 VW Radical Kustom 🤠 Ian Roussel Fabs A One Of A Kind VW Door Hinge System 👽 🛸
There are no rules in car customization, and if there was a rule it would be to go as far outside of the box as your fabrication skills can take you. Ian envisioned a simple and radical solution to this style of door opening. He walks himself and Jamie through the process, with pretty satisfying results. This is only the beginning. Come journey with Ian out of this world fully into the outer space of KUSTOMS. 🛸 🛸 🛸 🛸
"Car Building Is Fun! Lets keep it that way."~ Ian Roussel
The backstory...
Ian has decided to lower this VW Beetle 6 inches to get it to the ground and start radically modifying this beat up 1968 VW Beetle, but like most things that were once going to find the fate of the crusher, he once again proves you can do some amazing things in your garage with some imagination, fearlessness and a willingness to make mistakes as you create. 🥴
His fascination stems from the seemingly limitless customization opportunities for this vehicle. Join Ian on a wild ride through his mind 👽 as he envisions then fabricates his most radical ideas to date.
Ian worked and studied at a bronze casting foundry as a young man, where he learned to create models, armatures, molds and finished sculptural artwork in all mediums and finishes. Ian is fascinated by the artistic process of sculpture. He brings this knowledge to his car customizations, to his TV show audience, and now he brings it to you, his growing KZbin audience.

Ian, you could consider using a sing out chair (like from the navigation station) from a boat to make your seat swing out so you can set on it then swing into the car. It could mount inside on the b pillar area. Put a nice seat on it with a locking point so it will stay still while driving. Maybe even make it actuate with the door to swing you out while the door opens.

When you’re fitting the door at the end of the video, I noticed the part that slides back-and-forth that the hinges welded two are you going to make that a little longer. It looks like it might make the door more stable. Great job I’m learning a lot.👍👍👍😎👩‍🎓👨‍🎨💡

I've always imagined having a door open by coming out and hen up vertically,(like a minivan door but vertical, I guess) but I've never been handy enough or blessed with the means to build anything like that. much less figure out the math on how that would work. Watching Ian figure out how to do all the wrong things in allthe right ways is always cool. (or is that all the right things in all the wrong ways? I don't know... I've never hated a buld, I know that)

When you first put the combination fender running board on the passenger side I noticed the front part of the door was blocked. I thought great Ian how you going to get in the car? The window frame you built is way to small to Dukes of Hazard your way in, then I thought well I guess you could modify the door a bit to allow it open like normal, what I didn’t expect was what you came up with. That concept is bloody brilliant, I didn’t get it at first but once you mocked it up and then demonstrated your idea I thought how the hell did you come up with that idea and the more I think about it the more I like it. Now I really can’t wait to see it in action. As always great camera work and editing Jamie

Have you considered using motorcycle fork tubes ( minus the springs ) for the slide movement. Already lubricated and sealed. Also look how a self closing door works on a cam mechanism, so that it has to turn as it goes out.

Take a note from those old station wagon doors , that flapped down or to the side . I the door flapped down from the running board first / you can make a better seal to the frame . Then if you had a tubular extension [ like ] running board as some do as part of their roll cages / you can hide your rams and flip hinge to clear the rear tire . When you go back to closing the door , after flipping it back to a ridged base the rams suck it back to frame [ Less Warpage ] . Also you save so much room for your seats .

Hi Ian just a thought on your door hinge fab instead of a flat strap on inside of the door connected to the hinge. If it was a piece of angle iron going to the inside of the door you would have a wider surface to weld the hinge to plus a structure to weld to for caping 11:07 the bottom of the cut down door structure to . Sorry just a thought. Love your work. Always looking forward to your videos. Your awesome keep up the great work

Nice thought ! can really see it working ! Doors can open in so many ways its just someone coming up with the way of doing it. You can make it with gears and motors or air rams .... so many ways to make it do what you want it to. Funny the door will be the lightest part of the entire mechanism. I really liked the suicide hinges you made on the blue bug that had the coo front end on it. It was really low but, I have always liked suicide doors. Now that I can't move around much and I have either my wheelchair or a walker it makes it easier to get in and out when the door moves away from you the most. We have a Honda van and the power rear doors that slide really are nice for just that. Kee up the good work.. We really are getting wel deserved rains here in the desert. I just live in the Arizona part of the same desert. Keep warm and dry !

I was thinking you could cut the doors in half and just climb in like a dune buggy. I would actually leave the top of the door as well as the very front and back of the door, then cut between the front section and the rear section. Once done just weld the door shut and cover the top where you cut the door. You could do a circular cutout instead of a straight one as well.

Heya Ian, are you trying to build a door that will work similarly to the dihedral synchro-helix door mechanism that the Swedish car manufacturer Koenigsegg uses? If you don't know what I'm talking about just lookup Koenigsegg doors here on YT to find videos that show how those doors work. Seeing those doors work may help you design the doors for the custom bug you're working on.
