Sam sits down with Jaime Manson, Rafa Kidvai, Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg to learn how their counterparts on the right have successfully melted American minds to make us believe that God outlawed abortion. God didn’t. God’s actually pretty chill.

You are not wrong. The right wing cannot hold onto power by legitimate means (IE offering policies that are beneficial to most people), they can only do it by creating fear (vote for us or the other side will get into power and xyz will happen). That's why they have to create these strawmen. Abortion, immigration, CRT, pronouns... Basically anything they can use to gin up fear and/or anger in their potential voters.

We don't talk enough about how politicizing abortion was a concerted effort by conservative strategists in the 70s and 80s to unify conservative Catholics and Evangelicals in order to strengthen their voting base. And it worked. Abortion was not a huge political issue for most before this time. And now it is the single most important issue for so many voters. Very intentional and insidious. There's a very good NYTimes essay (Abortion Has Never Been Just About Abortion) that describes how much racism also played into this strategy.

I can appreciate the Catholic perspective and feel like they could have gone deeper into how that works - like she said, the church's stance is that abortion is bad in general, but still an overwhelming majority of them support Roe v Wade regardless. Because freedom of choice means they can practice their religion how they so choose, they can choose to not get an abortion in circumstances where others might opt to get one, and they can say they made that choice for religious reasons. But that personal decision isn't a mandate on others to do the same.

Ah, but that's assuming the pro-choice people were actually interested in reducing abortion. I propose it's not really about the baby's souls because they don't care at all about the baby when it is born. What they are interested in is making women suffer for their "original sin" and treating them as second class humans who are property of men. That includes not letting them have abortions as well as actively ensuring the mother & any children they give birth to suffer for not having a man who earns good money there to support them.

Well stated...and true. Additionally, as one of the women stated in the video, "Freedom of religion also means freedom from religion". One of the ideas that's supposed to separate us from many other nations is that the laws that govern the most recognized and celebrated religion (within a given country) don't also govern the land.

As we used to say growing up in the 70s: "Opinions are like a$$holes. Everybody's got one and they all stink." It used to be considered rude to inflict ones political or psychosocial philosophy at work. Now we raise our opinions to the status of morals and our whims to the status of commandments. This behavior is encouraged by the Megamoney interests President Harry Truman warned us about: "This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence-economic, political, even spiritual-is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together."

If you check out the CDC, most abortions are early in the pregnancy. Those that are mid to late term are for medical reasons. If the fetus is dead, it is extracted to spare the mother. If it is alive, and there is the barest chance of survival, they either do a caesarean or induce labor. Whichever is safest for the mother. In short, doctors do not perform late term "abortions" ever. I despise people who can't be bothered to look at the information collated by the CDC. I've had people tell me those numbers are not accurate, are lies, are made up. I hate those people more. Confirmation bias, belief perseverance, I try to be sympathetic. I don't often manage it.

The "anti-abortion law is against my relegion" is actually a good arguement. To pass or strikedown a law because one religious sect happens to believe one way is not separation of church and state. If the court ignores the beliefs of other religions that believe abotion should be legal because the health of the mother is more important, then that exposes their bias and they are unfit to serve as an impartial judge. They are creating law based on a minority religious belief. They become a political operative at that point.

This is my favorite Sam B. episode and what's the bomb is that she had all women. The history of Abortion and the ban against it is complex. Those of us who don't want to interfere with women & sometimes their partners choice to have an abortion, regardless of the reason, understand it's a healthcare issue; health is personal when it isn't communicable. Last I checked abortion isn't a disease. Those who are anti-abortion overlook that they don't bring this same effort for the babies living in this country who need to eat, need good healthcare and a functioning education system that offers Pre-K, instead they're obsessed about the unborn who sometimes don't make it to term.
@ForbiddenFollyFollower

Although, for fairness’s sake, she said that our book mentions that after 120 days, the soul is blown into the body of the baby. But that somehow is not related to any ban of abortion whatsoever. I'd throw tantrums if was seen as the lesser gender since the beginning of history too ...no one holds it against her, whine away! 🤣🍷you know, I'm SURE thats where the use of the word "whine" to describe complaining came FROM,..when woman would be given permission to talk by their husband or harem king after work, he would FIRST wave to THEIR servant and they would say to the barmaid "whine away"! "Oh is the MRS' gonna be allowed to talk again..he doesn't NEED this whine AGAIN, give him this grain alcohol it might help". And it stuck since then. Now... The man comes in from a long hard day of work, his dutiful wife has a hard drink ready for him so she can start talking.... STILL this way in MOST good homes 🤣

As an atheist, I have to point out, "atheist" doesn't mean the same thing a "secular". You should have said, "The law should be *secular* ." Also, the Bible possibly _does_ talk about abortion, and even *prescribes* it as evidence of a wife being unfaithful. Take a look at the "ordeal of the bitter water" (Numbers 5:19-24) where, as a test of a wife's faithfulness, the priest says some words, gives the wife a potion, and if she was unfaithful, then she'll have an abortion. (Admittedly there are other interpretations of the passage, but this is certainly one of the widely held interpretations.) That doesn't sound like a religion that should claim to be against any and all abortions, at least not if they don't want to be in conflict with their own religious texts. However, all of that's irrelevant. The US isn't a theocracy. You don't get to impose your religious beliefs (or non-beliefs) and laws on other people. Period.

Beat me to it! I was going to mention it. When she said there isn't, I was like, I beg to differ. Isn't it weird how us atheists and agnostics (I identify more as agnostic) seem to know more about certain parts of the text than the people that follow it? I know, it's like really super strange, huh?
