There's definitely a dark tone as the world and characters are introduced but I think there's a promise of hope in this show, similar to ATLA.

I have heard it described as "good people in an terrible world doing their best", and when taken as a whole, the show does have a very hopeful tone. The first bit definitely takes it's time showing that the characters are not in a nice world.

The reason these early episodes are so fast paced is that Brotherhood is a remake of the first FMA anime. FMA was a show that outpaced the release of the manga, so they wrote an anime-original ending for it. Brotherhood didn't come out that long after the first one finished airing. Since it had to go over a lot of the same story FMA had already told, the animators decided to fast track the introduction. Good for the large existing fanbase, but a little overwhelming for firsttime viewers.

So a lot of people are looking forward to all the rough parts and heartbreak, and I won't pretend that's not coming, but I think one of the best parts of this show is that it's not just constant doom and gloom, they do a *very* good job of giving you room to breathe along the way. So don't worry, there will still be plenty of lighthearted and uplifting moments, especially once you start getting to know the wonderful cast of characters better.

I want to send good vibes your way. One of this show's sub-themes is about the ups and downs of life. How nothing is ever just one thing. How, even on the worst day of your life, something good may have happened, and vice versa. So an episode will have sad moments, and funny ones, and hopeful or frustrating ones. It's a rollercoaster, and a journey worth going on. It can get very sad, but without sadness, joy loses its meaning. Take your time if you need a break, but if you make it to the end, you'll be just like us, rewatching it to laugh and cry all over again.

Brotherhood sprints through some of this early stuff because people were largely familiar with it from the original show. At least up to the point where the original went its own way because it has caught up with the manga. Imagine if they'd seen the original versions of these early stories. You get more time to meet and love some charactes. Don't get me wrong. Brotherhood is a better show, but Nina and Alexander was an even tougher moment in the original show.

A religion that took hold in a desert, with harsh rules to ensure the society survives in harsh conditions, monoheism, etc. Not to mention the author did heavy research on iraq (both sides) to flesh out some of the details. @@greatman5885She actually only mentioned them in one interview, she criticizes how Japan treats their indigenous people and she also likes to explore racial opression in her manga. She never actually stated that Ishvalans were inspired by the Ainu. It's obvious to anyone who has eyes that the Ishvalans were CLEARLY inspired by Arabs/Muslims, down to their appearances, cities, to their clothes and culture, to their religion, even the wars, genocide and opression. Hell, any similarities between what we just saw on this episode about the Ishvalan war to what's happening right now in Palestine is no coincidence. This is a sad story that keeps repeating in the Middle East. Now why the author never expressly talked about where ahe obviously drew inspiration from, now that I don't know. Maybe it has always been a touchy subject and she trusted her audience to catch the message.

Have they seen Cowboy Bebop? Doesn't someone die in almost every episode of that?
@PorungaSan11 ай бұрын
There is a difference between showing someone die and the death of a character that you get emotionally attached to. Not just that, in Bebop it is such a jaded adult way to look at death - its just something sad that happens from time to time, but you cant keep dwelling on it, there are more important things when you don't have enough money to put food on the table.
@joffrecordan11 ай бұрын
@@PorungaSan I agree the degree is different. The death in Cowboy Bebop is more poetic, and it's often easier to move on because it feels like there's closure, there. It also dwells on other types of loss and grief, I think. FMAB deals almost exclusively with death or the guilt revolving around it. While it brings up the abandonment issues repeatedly, I don't think the series really deals with it very well. All that said, I want to watch the girls break down in tears when Faye sees the video from her childhood.

@christiankello292411 ай бұрын
Any stratification can be used to justify horrid acts and genocide, and most certainly not just religion. A belief in a superior in-group reinforces 'other'-ing out-groups to the extent of dehumanization, priming people for such acts. In fact, 3 of the 5 worst genocides were committed by atheist regimes (Great Leap Forward, Holodomor, and the Khmer Rouge). ANY stratum can be twisted and wielded to commit atrocities.
