It's more about your humanity... knowledge (alchemy) is seen as something that will make you more than a human. The dwarf denied his 7 sins that were a connection to humanity, thats why when the homunculi die they are portrayed with human feelings (they are human but extreme or in an evil context). Also he as ed in the beginning think that knowledge will allow them to bypass reality and become divine. But he couldnt even save a little girl. The answer is to embrace your own humanity, your sins, your need of friends and a father and mother. That there are things you cannot change and that in a choice you should choose family vs power or knowledge, that is why ed gets it right. In japanese he in acknowledged by the truth (god) as al alchemist when he sacrifices his alchemy powers

@@Hession0Drasha there is ALOT of symbolism in FMAB in all honesty the scenes with 'god' are ALOT better in japanese :P FMAB draws alot from Philosophy, especially the distinct difference between the realm of Existence or everything we can touch feel and see taste and hear. and the realm of Ideals what most people would consider 'god' there is nothing in this last realm nothing we can hold, smell, see or hear or feel. it is filled with everything and nothing at the same time it is filled with ideals, knowledge, everything that we can't 'grasp' which is why the room is portrayed white and empty. there is a reason 'Truth' is blind and has no eyes. the show is a metaphor for finding your place in life supported by Philosophy. There was still Alkehestry. When he first discovered it, he was curious, but ultimately didn't care about it and used only Alchemy to achieve his goals. And in the end when faced with truth, he didn't know what he should have done when Alchemy failed.

@@highdefinition450 if you look at each of the sacrifice’s individual gates that we get to see, Ed’s is a depiction of the Tree Of Life. Al’s is a depiction of an Alchemy diagram. While Mustangs’s is a depiction of the Seal of Solomon, which is also what we see tattooed on Hawkeye’s back, not exact, but extremely similar. While Mustang’s gate isn’t exactly empty, it’s not near as flourished as either boy’s, showing his stubbornness in learning anything other than flame alchemy. Ed’s was the most embellished, from top to bottom. Father’s was completely blank.

Sacrifice is something Ed doesn't want to do anymore. Notice how in the end Ed and Al are trying to come up with a new theory of alchemy that surpasses equivalent exchange. And how when they found out what philosopher's stones were made out of, they intended to never use them. Ed doesn't want to sacrifice Hohenheim to bring back Al. It's supposed to be the last perfect buildup to Ed giving away his alchemy, effectively rejecting the idea of equivalent exchange. Hohenheim dies regardless, but on his own terms, and of natural causes, right by his wife's side. If Ed had used him to bring Al back there's a chance his soul would not have joined Trisha's in the end.

Every time I watch this episode I note how happy Truth sounds as Ed gives his answer. You get the feeling that Truth has faced hundreds of people who never seem to get the memo, but when Ed does, Truth is so thrilled to finally meet someone who just gets it. I always crack a smile when I hear “You’ve done it! That’s the right answer!”. You can literally hear the tone oozing “FINALLY someone understands what I’ve been saying!”

I also love the idea that Truth is willing to keep giving them a chance, all the way till there isn't any more chances to give. When they get it "wrong", he takes a toll from them in penance, since they were, in general, either arrogant or greedy. Trying to take from him what he gives, without understanding. But in the inverse, he is, seemingly, willing to give just about anything to someone whom understands what he wants from them, and are willing to be humble and satisfied.

The Dwarf already had everything already inside him, from his human blood. God/Truth tells him, "I am Truth and I am you." Hohenheim embraced his inner souls, Dwarf ignored them. Perfection is accepting your humanity and realizing that being "just" a human is the same as being God/Truth. Dwarf could have learned, maybe even evolved without stealing human lives to do it. Just being alive should be enough.

Alchemy isn't necessarily a sin, but subscribing to the sole belief that knowledge (or religion) is power is. Ed triumphed because he recognized that one can never become a perfect being without embracing his failings, treated his power/powerlessness with humility, accepted the help of the people around him, and stayed true to his humanity - things that Father failed to do. Truth is really the embodiment of one's conscience and a reflection of one's personality. Just as these characters have behaved towards others, Truth is snarky and sarcastic towards Ed, kind and empathetic towards Al (on that note, a lot of people - myself included on my first viewing - overlook that it was Truth in possession of Al's body that has been speaking to him, and not Al's body itself) and arrogant and demeaning towards Father. I'm glad you all loved FMAB's story as much as the rest of us here did. I know of a few who feel that it is "overrated" because it plays it safe and doesn't have the most complex of characters or scenarios, but beneath its simplicity it asks pertinent questions about how we should carry ourselves through life and handles it with aplomb. It truly is such a well-meaning series. Speaking of well-meaning, I'm not currently a Patreon but I hope you guys check out Mob Psycho 100 at some point! Season 2 is currently airing and it's up there with this!

The Truth is based on old Hermetic teachings as well as Jewish, Christian, and probably some other teachings mixed in. The concept of everyone coming from the same being like a Source Code. The Truth was both All (individual Humans, The World, The Universe) and One (The collective consciousness of humanity/God/The Godhead). The truth in FMAB is that humanity is separated from itself and viewing its own self individually. Each person has their own subjective Truth, but one person's truth is not any more true/any less true than another person's truth. The price they had to pay for seeing this truth was steep, but the reality of the matter was that it was their own fault because they were doing it to themselves. It is a really interesting and mind boggling concept.

Seeing the Dwarf's story wrapped up so fittingly, him being dragged kicking and screaming into a blank portal that shows he's never learned anything. Ed and Al being brought back into their normal bodies! And Hoenheim, oh man. This story is his as much as it is Ed and Al's and seeing him go hurts so much every time. Though, like Pinaco said, at least he went out smiling.

Edward accepts this himself when he gives up his Alchemy which is a reversal from the obsession he had when his mother died. He came full circle and it's what made Hiromu Arakawa's writing so beautiful.

I've yet to see or hear of someone who noticed the Portal of Truth differences between the Homunculus in the flask and Edward Elric. I didn't notice it my first time watching the series, but did spot it the second time lol. At 5:30 you can see the Homunculus in the flask and his Portal of Truth. Then you notice that his is completely blank, meaning that in the end he learned nothing about the truth he was searching for. Meanwhile, Ed's portal (at 8:38) is filled with pieces of information that he has gathered and learned over his journey.

I find it sad how almost no one realises how human Father actually is. Father isn't just some guy wanting to be God because he feels like it. He says it's to become a perfect being, but there's more. He wants what every human wants: Freedom You see no matter where you are, there are always laws constricting you down: society, nature, god, physics, time.... Those are things that we have no control over, but they have control over us. This is what Father wanted, he wanted true freedom, to not be bound by anyone or anything, to avoid consequence, to do whatever he desires. And his plan makes sense, if you strike down/become that which sets all laws, then you are the one that is free. Now I'm not saying I justify his actions, just that this desire that he had is something all of us have, deep inside. And he dies poetically just like the other humunculi: he gains the power to avoid all laws, but loses freedom itself. He's more human than anyone gives him credit for...(my real name is eren but my favorite anime is fma)

For all that big talk, all the Homunculus really wanted was to get out of his flask, yet all he kept doing was putting himself in another; constantly using the powers of others. In the end, his door of truth, which would normally have a ton of information on it is completely blank; symbolizing that he had truly learned nothing. Ed, on the other hand, had an over-reliance on alchemy and using it relentlessly in an attempt to fix his problems. He eventually realized that alchemy doesn’t hold all the answers; and that the solutions he needs are really all around him.

The God in FMBA is how Christians understand their God. He allows evil and allows good. There are consequences to every action. He does not force you to take part in what you don’t want to do and doesn’t stop you from taking part in what you shouldn’t do. Every humans has one thing in common no matter how long or short their life is; suffering. For limited creatures as ourselves are born into suffering for we aren’t complete but there is fulfillment in this world that we can achieve by striving to become perfect that can rectify our suffering. This comes down to the biggest question posed in the Bible. Satan and Jesus answered this question differently but Both are valid stances. “Should God have created a universe filled with suffering and fulfillment and is this universe and its creator good?” I find these answers have a contrast similar to Ed’s and Father’s answers; Ed’s answer compared to, “this universe and its creator is good,” and Father’s answer compared to the opposite. And as a Christian my view on our universe is like this. I am sided with Ed’s answers it’s just really hard to strive to become more perfect. And one thing to clarify, sin is more of a suggestion of what to not do than a forbidden action. If you want to strive to be more Christ like you shouldn’t do these stuff rather than because you believe in Christ you are forbidden to do these stuff. I see a lot of people think this way and I don’t understand why but please tell me. I would always like to learn more.

That's a really good explanation, but I don't think the truth can be simplified down to an interpretation God The Father. There are some very significant differences. Most notably the fact that the truth is not benevolent or forgiving. It is simply fair.
