People being like "in my day I only got a Macbook"... Hell, all I got was the degree and no gear whatsoever (2004). I paid off the loan last month.

I'm in the camp of people who don't understand the purpose of a degree in anything creative. The only reason it sounds potentially valuable is the networking, but not the actually courses themselves.

You’re absolutely right about not needing the degree but in this situation it’s a good opportunity for beginners to learn the foundation of cinematography and also get some really nice gear.

On the other hand most people work in a field unrelated to their degree. At this point a college degree is basically just a checkbox on your resume. I absolutely wish I had ignored everyone's advice and gotten a creative degree in something I was interested in. My college experience would have been much better and I would still be in exactly the same place employment-wise.

​@@FILMSBYRU with the point you just made, a beginner could instead avoid the debt and take whatever money they have saved up to buy an entry level set up for around 5k. Someone who knows dogshit about cinematogrophy does not need a sony fx6 kit with a $260 tripod and studio light set up. With things like youtube and master classes, fullsail is the last option a beginner should be looking into when like you agreed, the degree itself is worthless.

I agree you could attend numerous workshops or bootcamps here in So Cal or Atlanta buy your own gear and start a youtube channel. sign up on Staff Me UP or any of these job boards sites look for work in your town. Start shooting projects for businesses in your city. I graduated in 2010 if I had the access of todays kids I woulda skipped film school. I dont see the value in film school anymore.
