This is very useful, but in a lot of cases you have a maximum hole centres specified by a structural engineer, if this is the case you will want to do the following. 1 - Create a "maxholecentres" parameter, in the parameters window, this will be what you need to change if the hole centres need to vary. 2 - Create a Numberofholes parameter, this will need to have the following equation. 1+ceil(isolate(((Length-(H1*2))/maxholecentres);ul;mm)) This will take the overall length value and subtract the two end distances (h1) then divide the amount left by the hole centres, then turn the number into a unitless figure before rounding it up and adding 1. 3 - Create your pattern as you normally would, make sure you're set to "distance" instead of spacing and then use Length-(H1*2) as the distance then for the number of holes, simply use the Numberofholes parameter. Now you have a holes pattern which will dynamically adjust to the size of the part and you can increase or decrease the maximum hole centres by adjusing the maxholecentres parameter which will add or subtract holes as required. Also worth mentioning, that although this is typically something you might do in inventor. If you use dynamic blocks in autocad, you can do the exact same thing with driven constraints in a parametric dynamic block.

This is extremely simple and yet...incredibly useful. We just did a die similar to this...idk two or three weeks ago. With a few more parameters this could be very easily modified and scalable in the way we would need it. Thank you for this video! Next show how to use iLogic to create patterns with counts and spacing created using nominal space ranges. Example: Holes evenly spaced with spacing around 30 mm. That one is always an eye-opener for the casual user.

I do this just a bit differently for sheetmetal . I drop and dim 1 hole ( not necessarily with named parameters) select distance then for length select measure and subtract initial measurement from end of the flange length twice. I do this mainly on sheetmetal flanges where the flange may not be the true length of the parts due to flange offset and such but you want even holes. Thanks for the video Neil as always

Hi tfi. I need to make a cilindric shape roller out of 3mm sheet metal. But there aslo needs to bee some kind of hole pattern on the whole face. Can that be done in Inventor? So that I can laser cut the pattern before rolling.

Great video! Do You (or You; random comment section reader) know if this is possible to do in an assembly with Component pattern? I want the pattern to insert parts to automatically fill in blank space when lengthening the assembly. To calculate #number of needed components, I tried naming the dimension "length" and making a simple formula "length/400" but no matter how i edit it, the text stays red and won't compute. Length between each insert is set to (c/c) 400. In my head, this is a simple command, but it doesn't seem as Inventor has it incorporated although you can fill in most menus like this.

How do you create a pattern where you want to have the geometry evenly spaced between. It doesn’t matter what the number of cuts/holes or geometry are. In my case I want to create a bead board on a sheet of MDF (49”x97”). The first cut is on the edge of one of long sides and the last cut is a distance from the other long side equal to the spacing between all interior cuts which are equally spaced. This set up allows the installer to only make one cut when installing more than one board while maintains the pattern. I use Fushion 360, I’m sure the principles are the same. Thank you for a great video. If necessary a portion of one or both sides can be cut off in the production of the sheet

Very nice video. But the holy grail of the patterned holes, is the distribution of holes (and patterned features in general) inside a closed random spline. What about that? Creo and SolidWorks have already something like this. I am amazed, this is not available in Inventor so far. Is there any patent issue?

Width - H2*2 - works good without ( and ). You don't need to use brackets in this expression because Inventor knows math rules ))))

Can't promise I'll learn either as I'm already juggling far too many areas of expertise, there's only so much stuff someone can take on so I'm just not sure yet, I want to but realistically it's going to be difficult to find the time and brain space to take that on!

I really do like your channel but this "trick" on hole patterns is something that every good engineer already should have figured out on his own - as you mentioned in your video. ;) One question remains: Why work with two sketches if you could include the point for the first hole directly into the first sketch and reuse it for the hole feature? Of course with that you would need to extrude not symmetrically but into one direction... Wherever it is possible I challenge myself to use only one basic sketch with as many information in it as possible. With that most changes can be made out of this one sketch.

One of the unofficial golden rules of Inventor is to try and keep things to 1 separate sketch per 3d feature. Reusing sketches isn't something that's recommended if it can be avoided

​@@Neil3D Oh really? I didn’t know that and maybe I have been lucky that it worked well for me to use as few sketches as possible. Can you tell me please why it’s not recommended? I thought one sketch is more "stable" than many sketches derived from one another by projected geometry etc.

I normaly don't bother with namning the dimension, Instead of "list parameters" I chose "Show Dimensions" and pick the feature I want to see, then pick dimensions I want to use it the equation. In more complex parts, where I might want to go back and be able to edit and change the dimension easily in the parametrs window I will name the measurment, but not for a pattern lite this.
