Step 1: Notice zero fuel for trains in inventory. Step 2: Absolutely under no circumstances add train fuel to personal logistic requests due to getting sidetracked by current build. Glad it's not just me that constantly does things like this!

Damn. Small city blocks must be a killer in space exploration. I ended up building wider blocks with roboports on the perimeter between the rails. They have a 3x3 roboport space in the centre, and they're still a squeeze for some recipes on nauvis. The standard blocks seem to work pretty well in space, though. Hadn't considered splitting each stage of production like you have. Looks neat and still have space to expand later 👍

Thanks for continuing the series! It's fascinating to see the differences in your approach versus my own play through. I've been doing city blocks, but more compact at one block per catalog with 10-15 inputs/outputs per block. At one block per card, the throughput in your base is going to be something to behold!

I just beat an old Space Exploration (before space elevators) in 470h, pretty slow. Space base was 90% logistic robots - mortality 100/min XD No idea how to get to 250 speed at 3000, had to get the first factory spaceship infinite research for 3500 integrity and still just barely made it. Good times. Can't wait to see automated spaceship runs in this stream! Fleets of arcosphere collectors!

I'm not sure if this is the best method for handling crashes, but in y base I use filtered storage next to my landing pad to put them back into it. This way any items picked up by bots will be put back into the correct landing pads.

I use big yellow chest as well. Filtered to the item. I use 2 though. The one from the pad only has 40 slots open (keeps rocket use down). The second inserts to the first with no restricted slots The firsts inserters are wired to the second box to only work if there are less than 100 item in the second box.

I am not sure those 1-1 trains will be able to handle amount of scrap produced by material 2. One recipe is producing 1k scrap. I am assuming you will switch to space elevator eventually and having short trains going through elevator can create a bottleneck.

Couldn't that be solved by having the space elevator network disconnected from the rest of the space network? Having the bigger trains come up the elevator and drop off to a loading area that the smaller trains can pick up from.

You certainly can do that but then you have to build a hub where trains deliver dozens different resources and shorter train picks them. It is chore to do that.

You can recycle it in the orbit but then you have just replaced one problem with another - what to do with recycling output. Orbit does not use enough low tier resources such as iron or copper plates so you would have to build replica of production lines which you have on surface but with space structures and without production modules. All to prevent overflow in the recycling. Best solution I found is recycle on land and feed output back to core miner, which already handles same set of resources.

turn scrap into landfill, put it in a big box and forget it:) not worth to send scrap to land and recycle... to much work.

Space exploration is a mod you can download in-game factorio. It shouldn't be confused with the upcoming DLC called Space Age however
