Making a comment about electricity and water not going together on a video like this, is like watching someone safely pack away a pair of scissors in a solid metal box and then commenting "you shouldn't run with scissors, it's not safe"
@gewdvibes6 жыл бұрын
9600GTMAN you clearly know nothing about the safety of electric motors lol. These guys can’t just throw electric motors into boats and call it a day they have to pass strict safety tests and be extremely safe in many conditions including damage. How come Tesla’s don’t explode when submerged? Or right because they’re not idiots the batteries and electric motors are completely safe in water

@Gewdvibes ~ The electric canal Tug Boat is a winner, if it's tech passes or the marine tests, and can do the job. Damen the ship manufacturer will be watching these guys, they have a next gen hybrid electric diesel tugboats to handle the massive ships in harbour and coastal. They eventually are moving away from the diesel engines to the next gen Gas (LNG) engines, and have specialist 100 ft long LNG tanker pump station boats, that comes to the hybrid gas electric tugboats to fuel them up. Damen found that their diesel powered tugboats when on duty, run their engines constantly at idle between heavy pulling jobs and just standing on station to a non moving ship. That diesel engine idle on standby, accounts for almost 70% of the tugboats fuel costs.

@@nc3826 I've carried out a number of engine conversions and my day job is a vehicle project engineer so an electric conversion is firmly within my capabilities. The cost of motors, batteries and ancillaries in the UK however is my limiting factor! @Charles-A Rovira I like your style 👍
@xxwookey6 жыл бұрын
@@nc3826 It's not that hard to do conversions if you are handy. Some electrical and mechanical clue is needed, but it's really not rocket-science. It's much simpler than tweaking engines. As the parts get more standard it's getting easier. It's also easier in the UK than much of the rest of Europe, because we have quite relaxed rules on modified vehicles.

A small peek into the garages of the future there. Bringing the cost down of conversion to electric may be the real key to making this all work. I had a BMW 318i touring, lovely cruiser, named it The Silver Land Shark. It died on the motorway. The engine flew apart, blew a hole in the block and bits of cylinder fell out like little crushed metal butterflies.. I keep a piece of one it's cylinders on my bookshelf out of respect. It would still live today if i could have just pulled the engine out and had it converted. Something to think about.

future project, convert 54' sailboat to electric power. That would be amazing, cover most of the deck with solar, flexible panels could be stitched into the sails. Well, off to work to pay for all this.
@___Chris___4 жыл бұрын
@@NomadicPhoton It's always nice to hear when people are excited about solar-electric boats. But, as I see it, almost all solar-electric boats that qualify for more than toys are multihulls for good reasons: improved efficiency with narrow hulls and no keel ballast, plus lots of added surface area for solar panels; efficiency rather than top speed is key for solar-electric boats; this also includes superiority of pure displacement hulls (like double-ender canoes, with a fine bow entry and pointy stern) over the typical semi-displacement hulls with lots of rocker and a semi-submerged transom (like seen in most sailing yachts); slender hulls (high length/displacment ratio) can still easily go beyond the theoretical hull speed; stiching solar panels into sails also doesn't really work, e.g. because you can't reef them when the wind is too strong, so why not go 100% solar and forget about the sails? There are more advantages: less maintenance/repair (due to all the wear and tear that usually goes into mast/sails/rigging), increased stability (lower center of gravity and center of effort), smoother ride (no fluctuating forces associated with wind gusts), solar panels on the deck won't be in the shadow of the sails (remember: solar cells are internally wired in series, i.e. covering only a fraction of a panel in the shadow will make the voltage output drop to almost zero) and solar-electric also has less issues with going upwind; a low-profile (=low windage) trimaran design with all accomodations in the central hull and a large unobstructed deck surface covered with solar panels probably makes the most sense for solar-electric boats; only problem is: this needs to be built from scratch; converting a sailing boat into a solar boat gives away much of the theoretical potential
