@michaelrch4 жыл бұрын
zenbudhism 1. The boot is a bit small for a family of 4 doing a small road trip. 2. The wheels spin if you accelerate a bit too hard, especially in Sport mode and especially in the wet. I have changed my front tyres already! Now I am more careful. 3. When it's cold, it's can be a bit tricky to get the climate to hit a comfortable temperature and stay there. That's all I can think of. HTH. Oh, one more. 4. If you floor it in Sport mode, the steering becomes light and you have to work pretty hard to keep the car going in a straight line. Can take some getting used to if you are trying to overtake on country roads.

It does look like the Kona cargo space is too short to replace my current car. There's no affordable electric car with enough room to take a fully assembled bike in the back with the seats down and most of them aren't rated to tow at all, so my dieselgate diesel remains a better fit for my needs. I saw (Probably on comments on other electric car videos) that that VW ID3 can be fitted for a tow bar for bike racks, but won't be rated to actually tow at all. I'm really starting to wonder what mainstream manufacturers are thinking building limits in to their electric cars when the cars they've been making for decades don't have the same limits.

@@ewanmacgregor6186 I bought my car as a bike transporter, so between carrying my bike for my own spins and towing a trailer with up to 16 bikes on club spins, this functionality is fundamentally needed. taking a wheel off more than doubles the time it takes me to put a bike in the boot, every time I do it, even more if you factor in that I ride mountain bikes, so the bike could be covered in mud. Having got used to not needing to do that, there's no way I'm going back. I have used nearly a a half tank of fuel since the end of January though, so buying an electric car would cost me money I'd never make back on fuel saving anyway. The frustrating thing is when my current car does die, it's nearly 10 years old now, the market for 2-4 year old electric cars still won't have anything worth buying for my needs pushing me back to another diesel estate car based on what's for sale now, though a turbo petrol version of the same car would be of interest with the mileage I do too. The other shitty trend in cars in general but especially electrics is the lack of a spare wheel - having a spare has allowed me to get on with my day with minimal inconvenience too many times to ever consider buying a car without one. Sadly most new cars, especially electric ones, seem to be missing even the option to have a spare, which runs the risk of turning me into a classic car enthusiast :-(.

@@peglor the Rivian has a huge towing capacity but it won't be cheap and no idea when it'll be delivered. For me the lack of space I can cope with when I'm saving so much in fuel. Means I can use my trailer when lock down ends and until the Ford comes out.

So... after 140,000 km, I had my first car part replaced, which went bad, covered by warranty: some bearing on the front-right suspension mount. If I look, however, on recalls, I must point out that my battery was changed, although it didn't had any kind of degradation (still 420 km range in the city during the winter and 250 km range on the highway in the 10-80% range - 330 km range full battery - at 120 km/h ACC) after 123,000 km. @@ossxq Soon hitting 160,000 km mark :) and out of warranty. Actually the car is at 159,800+ km. Normal commute (70-100 km) and some 1,000 - 5,000 km journeys (leisure) every few months do add up pretty quickly. I have my folks / family in Romania, and I'm using the car to get there from Switzerland. One way trip is over 1,900 km, so I usually add very quickly 5,000 km in 3-4 weeks of leisure combined with "working from anywhere" policy from my workplace. Then you add your typical city-breaks around in France, Germany, Austria, Italy, which add up to about 1,500 km for a week. And in the end, you add to all this the commute of around 70 - 100 km for each day I get to the office and back. Of course, that's not daily and I usually work from home quite often. But that's my typical mileage.

@@ossxq I went for it from a Honda Civic mk. 8 hatchback. One thing to watch out for is to not charge it that much unless you really need the range. Ideally you might want to use the 10-80% range on the battery and charge it overnight. I have the single-phased on-board charger, so I see it as 10% per hour, but if you have the three-phased on-board charger, and you can provide the 11 kW of power to your car, then it'll be even better. If all of your 260 km (back and forth) are on the highway, you might want to step down a bit on the speed. I found that the sweetspot for the car is 120 km/h on the ACC. Keep in mind that 0% is really 0%. The car doesn't have a "lower" buffer, and many got stranded thinking that they can drive for another few kilometers until they reach a charging stop, unlike other car manufacturers which do feature a larger lower buffer. If you get the facelifted model (not the one in the video) then you'll get slightly better efficiency, as they have improved the drag coefficient a bit. Otherwise, I think all the reasonable things apply to an EV battery as for a regular smartphone one: high heat and freezing temperatures is the number one enemy of any Li-Ion battery. While the not so wonderful 75 kW peak power (+2 kW used to cool the battery) doesn't heat the battery that much, during hot summers the temperatures in the battery can reach 39-40°C, which is not that great. But as long as you charge it slowly the battery itself will last a looong time. I know another guy who charged its car 99% at home, from a regular power outlet and his degradation after 150,000 km was 0.8%

I've had my Kona Electric Prem SE since Aug 2019 and I love the car. You are right, I don't think about the range anymore, because I don't need to. Most of the time I am charging from home at 7 kWh for typically 7 hrs. It is so easy to drive and it also has great performance (more power and acceleration than the top performaning Kona petrol car). In Pre Covid-19 times I have taken my Kona on longer trips from Chelmsford to Devon and Chelmsford to Leeds, and I understand your comments regarding prefering to take you Tesla Model 3 on longer trips. We know the Kona Electric can do the longer trips with ease, but you just have to take more care planning your trips to identify the rapid (>=50 kW) charger locations, as the general EV UK CCS rapid charger infrastructure is not great compared with the Tesla Supercharger network. On the plus side, it is improving. Since having my Kona the number 50+ kW CCS rapid Chargers in Chelmsford has virtually doubled to from 4 to 7, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

I've been convinced of the electric future for some time. We bought a Yaris Hybrid in 2012 for my wife. I swapped my Land Cruise for an Outlander PHEV in 2015, Three years ago my wife went fully electric with a 30Kw Leaf. Having decided to reduce to one car the PHEV was traded for a Kia eNiro 64Kw last month just before lock-down so I've only managed just over 200 miles. The lease on the Leaf was up on May 1st but we still have it as the collection company is not considered an essential business. I haven't had a chance to fully assess the eNiro but I believe if Kia can get them into mass production it is a better car overall that the Kona and is set to take electric cars to a new level. Keep up the good work at Fully Charged.

I have one myself - it was fun to watch and see what someone else thinks of it. The "old man grunt factor" is something I totally get - my previous car was down a lot closer to the ground, and getting out of the thing usually involved putting my elbows on the frame for extra leverage. The Kona is so much better and easier to get out of. If it weren't for this Covid thing, I would be out driving a lot more. Right now I have nowhere to go. The only little nit that I can complain about is that the LED headlights are apparently fairly bright - I frequently get flashed by other drivers who seem to think I have my high-beams on.

He installed a 9.6kw charger in his garage, and it's great, cause if there is a little time between trips, you can get a lot of charge in it. Robert I'd buy 1 in the morning except my wife is a wheelchair user. Therefore we have to get the passenger seat to swivel outwards and I need the boot big enough to just pop the wheelchair in with no dismantling for those days when it's absolutely pouring. We live in Ireland so we get a good bit of rain, especially in the winter. We've been told that the original seat cannot be swiveled as there isn't space for it. So I stayed with Skoda's Octavia Combi as it covers all requirements. Now if only they made an electric version of it and have it reasonably priced. Anyway as usual it's enjoyable hearing you natter away on electric cars, it's just so relaxing listening to you. And before someone says he gets his car for nothing because of my wife, sorry to tell you I had to pay all €32,450 of it.

I disagree with the miles/km per kWh recommendation. Well, that's what you get for not using the metric system... The best measurement, to my eyes, is in kWh/100 km (or miles). And since a liter of fossil fuel basically has 10 kWh of energy, this is pretty straightforward to compare the energy consumption of ICE vs electric. An electric car consuming, for instance, 18 kWh/100 km is basically equivalent to 1.8 l/100 km. Straightforward, and to the point, plus it is just a simple division to get the estimated range from that.

Hi, I’ve had the pleasure of owning a Kona EV 64kwh since March 1st 2019, now with approx 11,000 miles on the clock. Still looking for something other than the small trunk/boot that I don’t like. On the plus side, it’s supposed to do 278 miles per charge. Over the past few months I’ve been getting between 327 and 356 miles per charge (average if anyone is interested of 344 miles per charge!!!) My journey is a 14 mile to work, 14 mile home, 5 days a week. I travel in the peak hours. The difference - not going 10 - 15 mph above speed limit, and travelling at no more than 50 mph; oh yes, and no A/C.... My journey time is increased by approximately 4 minutes!!! Be interesting to see what the winter returns are like...
@nickmartin8844 жыл бұрын
I remember when this first came out and popped down to my local Hyundai dealership. It's really great and "almost affordable" - LOL - but it's simply too small for a family. The back is also too small for adults and the boot is a bit of a joke unless you've previously been driving a BMW i3. I view the Kona as a bit of a 'niche' vehicle given its limitations. I would love the E-Niro but that's priced perilously close to a Model 3. I had to go for the MG ZS EV - as Robert mentioned in his review, "quite a few quirks", but it's big enough and most importantly, affordable.
