Would you buy one? With your own money? How long would you keep it? It's a trike! Being kind I would equate it to a a 2 seater sports car/roadster. Being honest I would not be caught dead in one! Let me ask you this question: You are driving along at an unremarkable 60mph on a dual carriage way & a big sided truck starts to pass as he gets half way passed an impatient car driver wants to pass him. Being a Trucker courteous Knight of the road, he floors it & moves closer to you and let's the car go by. All good? Almost as the truck completes the overtakes & moves back into the right lane. He checks his mirrors & you've gone? The compression & subsequent decompression of air as he passed has flipped you on your side/roof & into the the ditch! Oh, sorry the question: Buried or cremated?
@uladzimirc5672
@uladzimirc5672 Жыл бұрын
@@kevinburke6743 you dare to ask Aptera engineers how their cars would deal with truck drivers; it's far beyond my expertise to ponder about air and other technical stuff. They way I view this car is as the perfect mean to forget about the gas expenses and other expenses on other disgusting carbon substances needed to be infused in your car. Of course, being limited with two seats doesn't really make it a good car for families living in suburbs, but there are other categories of people that are OK with only two seats, and it's not a small marginal category. Other than that, thank you for your opinion. Very thorough criticism of Aptera's safety from your side, pal!

@@kevinburke6743 "the compression and subsequent decompression of air as he passed had flipped you on your side/roof" If you had researched this vehicle in the past, you would know that this specific issue was actually a design consideration when creating this vehicle, as far as any amount of air is concerned this car basically doesnt exist, from its side all of the pressure differentiation would just be sucked and swooped through the open bottom of the vehicle, meaning that the car is virtually unaffected.
@my2cents795
@my2cents795 Жыл бұрын
@@kevinburke6743 Does the side of an Aptera look flat to you ? Because that's the kind of surface that would interact significantly with air being pushed into it or from it. The Aptera aerodynamics engineering team had a ridiculous amount of time to work on every aspect of the shape of this vehicle from all the way in the late 2000s. They have ran the simulations and have optimized the shape for every scenario over and over for years and now it's all being tested irl. You're claiming to be more of an expert than a team of specialists working on the problem for years. I suggest you reconsider your claim sir.

Aptera, take note: When the VW Lupo 3L was sold in Europe, roughly 25% of the total Lupo production line from 1998 to 2005 was sold in Denmark! 25%!! There are still a lot of Lupos on the road here today, and we wave or talk enthusiastically to each other upon seeing another - either in motion or parked. That is a crazy market share and loyalty for any car model production sales anywhere. Danes will want your car; strike a deal with the Danish goverment - it's a win/win scenario. 🙂

Lupo was small and good for urban driving. Aptera only seems small. In reality it's very wide, wider than a typical SUV, it's not good for tight spaces. With current size, it can't even be registered in Europe, as this kind of vehicles need to be up to 2 m wide and 4 m long and this thing exceeds both.

As soon as this car is available in Europe (especially Denmark), I'm buying one. Right now, we have two diesel VW Lupo 3L (never marketed in the USA) that easily delivered their advertised 82 MPG as new in 2003 (3 Liter per 100 Km, hence the "3L" name in Europe where they measure efficiency in Liters [quarts ... 4 quarts to a gallon] used per 100 Km). After 19 years wear and tear, they both still average an astonishing 76 MPG (3.3 Liters per 100 Km). I would happily keep these cars for the rest of my life, but rules are changing with the climate crisis that deny diesel cars driving into big city centers (like Copenhagen, where we live). So this little Aptera would suit our needs just fine when the no-diesel rule comes into effect October 2023.

I love this thing. I've watched so many reviews of it. I've always said that I'd never buy a new car, but this thing is special. My only issue with it is parking it, and how protected those wheels would be against British curb sides on urban streets. I get the feeling that the fairings will need to be very heavy duty and durable. For example, when I park outside my flat, I usually get in so close that my tyre touches the curb. That would be ill advised in an Aptera.

I actually teared-up whilst watching this video...! I've only had an EV now for a few years, but I'm already 100% EVangelical about efficiency and making the most out of the energy I put in. So, to hear CEO Chris Anthony matter-of-factly describe how, just by ticking off the 'mathematics' parameters to ultimate efficiency, you end up with the beautiful, swooping design of the Aptera... I honestly welled-up with the realisation that incredible efficiency and clever design IS being taken seriously in the EV market. And, that the starting price is well within the reach of mass market users is simply incredible and genuinely exciting. Oh... and his comment "there are no brick-shaped fish" was just legendary...!! 🤣

7:00 - Being legally classified as a motorcycle also allows them to save weight by significantly reducing safety systems. I'm not complaining, I own a similar (although much less "stylish") Arcimoto FUV that achieves weight savings the same way - it's only 1300 pounds. But it must be acknowledged that this is a compromise made in the name of efficiency. And yes, I have a preorder for an Aptera, too. My biggest concern is the width - with the side-by-side seating (instead of front/back like Arcimoto) and the outboard wheels, it's very wide - wider than the F-150 Lightning. The swoop up behind the seating position is a part of that skin surface cooling. Most all EVs use flat panels underneath for the aerodynamic benefits but with four wheels and suspension needed for the ones at the rear there can be no swoop upwards. Briefly The air that gets admitted under the front of the cabin is slightly compressed but will be rapidly expanded from that swoop while still in contact with the vehicle. expanded air gets cooled in the same, but opposite way that air that gets compressed gets hot. Think of the heat of a bicycle pump near the bottom after several hard pumping strokes. All fast aircraft also taper towards the rear as do fish, birds and dolphins. It is how that taper is done that changes to a flattened form when close to the ground. I study these things as I work with streamlined human powered vehicles that are even more efficient than the Aptera. Our world record racers have achieved 89.6mph through 200 Meters after a 5 mile run up on flat ground with nothing but the leg, heart and lung power of the rider.
@dereknalley

>Briefly The air that gets admitted under the front of the cabin is slightly compressed but will be rapidly expanded from that swoop while still in contact with the vehicle. You're describing a low pressure zone, which would mean the drag would be incredibly high. I'm pretty sure that's exactly the opposite of what the car designers wanted. They made the car to be slippery, which means as little drag loss to low pressure zones behind, around, and under the car as possible. It would be impossible to both have a low drag coefficient and also create a zone of low pressure that's creates a cooling effect through gas expansion.

I park on the road and live in the tropics. This car would be perfect. Can't wait to buy one.

This vehicle keeps tempting me and I am a Tesla fan and investor. Unfortunately this didn't qualify for the new new EV tax credit, BUT at the prices they are starting at... it shouldn't be a deal breaker. I love the look (we have a reservation for a Cybertruck) so it's a go on so many levels. Give this vehicle SERIOUS CONSIDERATION. I'm excited to see them produce and deliver these to people. I might end up being one of them.

Agree completely. It's the first "tricycle" that I've ever been propely excited about. And I also say that as a Tesla admirer and investor. I very much hope Aptera succeed, and also their 3-wheeled fun utility vehicle friends up the coast, Arcimoto. A word for jack. Does he do those end monologues in a single take? It actually looks and sounds like it. He speaks to camera very well. Not a single um.. or err. Impressive.

I used to be a Tesla fan but the longer Musk stays in charge the less of a fan I've become. I've heard too many horror stories of Tesla not making repair parts available that at this point I'm waiting for a better option from a more traditional OEM. However, I've always liked the efficiency of the Aptera and they've just gotten better this time around by including solar panels. Once they start deliveries at that point I'll put down a deposit.

Agree. I ordered one when they were introduced. I live in Denmark, so it will be a few years before it arrives here. But unlike the Cybertruck order I believe it will actually be delivered here. Do you want my Aptera refferalcode?

As a long time Tesla fan and investor, I agree too - the Aptera ticks all my boxes and I can't wait to be in a position to own one. And yes, Andy, Jack's talent, style and cognitive performance is a huge asset to the channel - there's no way I could do that in even 100 takes!
