Actually, as an owner, and having got rid of an estate car when changing to the P2, there isn't that much difference. The opening tailgate is the most important thing. True, it isn't a flat floor but still, the space and access is great. It's probably enough for many people.

A Norwegian motor magazine does real life range tests of many cars every year and in their latest test they used the RWD single motor Polestar 2 and it came in second of all cars tested. Only beat by the larger Tesla Model S Long Range. This is a really great improvement.

If they lowered the price a bit you'd see a lot more. It is just too expensive fir what it delivers. I love the car, would have gotten one if they weren't mire expensive (while less efficient and less practical) than a Model Y. P*2 LR AWD with Performance pack costs (at least in my country) 6000€ more than a Model Y performance and that is even without options (Pilot pack and plus pack). With those packs it is 15000€ more expensive?!?!

Okay, I’ll take the bait. I paid $32,100 US for my inventory Model 3 RWD in early June 2023 including government (state and federal) incentives, destination fee, order fee, sales tax, and Connecticut registration. Another $7500 off in trade in on a 2012 Forester with 108,000 miles on it. So all together just under $25k. That price and a pretty nice car made me think better of myself.

It was always a fine-looking car that seems to tick a lot of boxes for many people. Normal facelifts are usually the round of tweaks and changes for the sake of it, Polestar have actually made some useful and sensible improvements. from what I remember volvo mentioned that for xc40 ICE it used 7 tons and for the xc40 electric version used double 14 tons. Soo 3 tons reduction for this car is pretty good.

Really had my heart set on the Polestar 2, test drove at the FC show last year, and noticed two things, the massive centre console (I have two legs!), and the drive, quite firm. Was told the harsh ride was down to the tyres being in 'transport mode'...what? Loved the user interface, more like a conventional car, but that architecture needs a good look at...

Cars are often shipped with tyres at max inflation pressure, about 55psi to prevent flat spots in storage. These should have been lowered at the PDI (Pre-delivery inspection)

Enjoy the windows going up and down at the press of the remote button. My 4 year old XC40 did this until recently. You can't now put windows up at it 'a volovo safety feature'. You have to get in, start ignition and press buttons in the door 😮😢

The sales guy at our Polestar space made a point of showing us the 'curry hook' so knew about that. The rear hatch sensor thing is a bit hit and miss so must try your technique. Okay that works but as we have a fixed towbar fitted just have to be careful to avoid shin damage. Auto Park mode we knew about, just have to remember not to do this in our Leaf. Range assistant differs on ours either due to it being a NZ model, or you are on a later upgrade than us (P2.7). Window opening is dinky but do you know about the 'hold' function? Stopped in traffic and want to ensure you don't creep forward, or cause hesitation by touching the brake pedal which can then cause throttle delay? Just put your foot firmly on the brake pedal momentarily. This engages the park brake which disengages as soon as you touch the throttle.

I own a polestar 2. The trick with windows? I had no idea, but I will try that out next time I drive. It will impress the children ;-). The curry hook? Nope. So I will go and get take away soon. The foot bit, I don't think so. And the park button? Well....my wife was in our garage and dropped something on the floor of the just stopped car. When reaching around for it, she pressed the accelerator. Luckily, I'd "prepared" the end of the garage for something like this with several, upright bags of garden fertilizer and 2 stored garden table tops (wood). We needed a new garden table but the car was okay. And on my instructions, the first thing any driver does upon stopping at a destination is press the park button.

Not many EVs sold in the US can handle that kind of commute in the dead of winter with all 70mph highway driving but this one is looking like it could.

Unless the Boot rather than Hatch is a non starter - the Tesla Model 3 (at least in the UK) is much much cheaper for practically the same spec. And you get the use of Tesla supercharging. Have you discounted the Model 3?

It's nice to see that Polestar is doing to their AWD EVs, what Hyundai/Kia/Genesis have been doing since the introduction of the e-GMP platform. Decoupling of the front wheels is an excellent way to increase efficiency at speed.

I am pretty sure Tesla do the opposite and use the front motor (which is a bit smaller) for cruising and only engage the rear for acceleration etc.

Except it doesn’t actually work on the E-gmp platform, the awd variants have a significant range reduction even with the front motor disconnected, and no one knows exactly why, the only comment on the record from Hyundai was the rear inverter is different on the awd.

Since then Tesla uses a permanent magnet rear motor that is the primary drive unit, and the front motor is induction. Induction motors don’t have flux losses when freewheeling, so no disconnect is needed. The disadvantage of a physical disconnect is there is a delay while it is engaged

I drove one for a month recently and agree with your comments. It's a very good car but the knee thing is uncomfortable and annoying. One thing you didn't mention is the small windows and large pillars. The all round visibility is not great and it gives a slightly claustrophobic feel to the interior.

I find that if you extend the cushion and tilt the seat base up, you lift your knee away from the dashboard and then the problem goes away :)

It’s a shame they’ve not fixed that transmission tunnel, it was the bit I really disliked and that was coming from test driving and i4, which also has one, but it digs into your knee a lot less. I really loved the polestar 2 in every other way, but it was a major issue for me as it felt like I was being squashed even compared to petrol vehicles

The only reason I went model 3 is because the p2 was nearly 20 grand more for the same features that the base model 3 was offering, like sunroof window, blind spot monitoring safety features etc. Just to get those simple features on a p2 were a nearly 6k add on to the base price. We haven't even got into the fsd part which p2 doesn't have.

@@MrSinnerBOFH It's not like you can't do that with a model 3. But it's an option that comes in very useful in cities with major traffic issues, which is common more now than before. Having your vehicle take control in stop and go traffic, especially coming from work, is worth every penny and more. But overall, my biggest disappointment with the P2, is that they charged for having blindspot monitoring, a feature that is standard in almost every vehicle, for a 3k markup. Coming from the Volvo brand, which is known for safety, that makes it even worst.

I agree it is very hard to justify all the extra spend to get more or less the same car. The only issue with the Model 3 is that daft boot aperture. If they decided to make a Hatch Back model 3 they would clean up.

It is such a beautiful car, love the looks. Hate the huge center console with no storage. But the biggest problem with this car is its price: P*2 LR AWD with Performance pack costs (at least in my country) 6000€ more than a Model Y performance and that is even without options (Pilot pack and plus pack). With those packs, which you need to have comoarable cars, it is 15000€ more expensive?!?!

Yes here in the UK an equivalent Tesla is a whopping 31.5% cheaper. Thats £12,800 more for the equivalent Polestar. You have to add extras like a heat pump, electric seats, LED lights, panoramic roof, and even a granny cable - which is a bit of a cheek for such an expensive car to start with....

Just drove a rental 2023 Polestar 2 and in many ways it was behind my 2012 3-series. The reversing camera was completely black at night rendering it almost useless. The wiper controls were a mystery; I couldn't seem to set them to auto. My family in the back were shivering with cold while I was melting at the front. The active cruise control was barely an improvement on a car I had in 2007. And while my 3 series doesn’t have lane assist, the Polestar kept deciding my hand wasn't on the steering wheel when it was until I gave up and just used manual steering because it was more comfortable. It was the first EV that's I'd driven though and as an experience it was incredible - very very relaxing. But being behind a 2012 BMW in terms of any aspect of technology or design detail is inexcusable - so hopefully this facelift has addressed those basic issues.

Rear passenger space is terrible in the Polestar. I had to break my neck getting in. I’d stick with a Model Y and getter much more for my money, better tech and performance. Plus a charging network.

I am actually against automatic parking brakes engaging when you leave the car. People get absolutely used to it and when they drive cars that don't do that, they get out of the car without activating the parking brake and very bad stuff happens next

Aren’t Tesla software updates keen on moving options around? Tesla’s might look prettier, but usability wise, Polestar’s Android Automotive is superior hands down to any other EV touchscreen (Tesla’s, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, VW, Audi…). Polestar!s UI is clear, obvious, options don’t change, big targets, bright colors with high contrast to help using it with just a quick glance at it. Tesla’s is very white and gray targets are too small, some screens are too busy

I think though the Polestar software would have to be next level to compete with Tesla. Good to hear that they have OTA updates though - unlike VW and many others.

Little easter-Egg from a Polestar consultant: there is a charging-card holder in the glove box. Open the glove box and on the top of it, there is a storage compartment. And from underneath that storage compartment there is a little sign of a charging-card. Under that sign is the spot where you can let the Polestar hold your charging-card, so it doesn't fly around somewhere in the car or makes your wallet thicker.

I will get one RWD in about a month. You got everything right but forgot 2 things. Top speed is now again 205 km/h and the charging speed is higher with a top of 205 kW. The WLTP range of the RWD is now officially 654 km with the 19 inch wheels.

@@06younger It was inititally estimated by Polestar to be 635km. When tested in the WLTP cycle it reached a maximum of 654km. They beat their own estimations. A norwegian motormagazine does real world range tests of so many vehicles every year and they tested the new RWD long range Polestar 2 and it came in second of all cars, only beat by Tesla Model S Long Range.

If you're American and about to write a comment about how the Model 3 is cheaper. STOP. This is a UK-based video and here in the UK the Model 3 Long Range is £50,990 and the Performance is £57,990. The Polestar 2 long range is £48,950 and the Performance is £57,950 so similar but the Polestar slightly cheaper. If you want to argue about charging networks, looks, build quality, range, or performance, go ahead, but I'm finding it quite tiresome seeing Americans constantly talk about how much cheaper Tesla is because they refuse to consider the prices anywhere else in the world.

My Model 3 used to do that - in the little green graph thing. it gives projected range based on your driving for the last 5 15 or 30 miles I think. However I have found just be easing back to around 60 mph and the range in any car, EV or otherwise - dramatically improves.

I like the shape and interior but it is such a pity the Polestar is so high, it needs to be lower, I would like more cars that are lower to aid handling and efficiency, this car seems like an SUV with a saloon body. Also the reason I have a tesla Model 3 Performance is because of the superb charging network and excellent software, once the other networks catch up I will consider another brand, I think the Google infotainment is good from what I hear, so more brands should adopt this if they cannot produce reliable user-friendly systems. For example, my wife has an Ioniq 5, it takes about 30 seconds to open the charge flap using the app, my tesla it takes about 2 seconds to respond and her car never seems to acclimatise the cabin on a schedule, where the Tesla always seems to work and cools or warms the car quickly whenever I need it too.

Well I sure hope it is better than the first Polestar 2, because the first one was garbage. I regrettably had one for 6 months and I spent almost every day of that requesting to return to my lease company. Thankfully they caved in and let me return it, because I HATED it. It was such a massive let down in almost every regard compared to my old Lexus IS300h. Yes, the accelleration was good on the Polestar, but that is where its positive attributes ended. Also, I loved the electric bit... so this isn't some anti-EV rant. The Polestar 2 I got was utterly rubbish. The reverse sensors were on crack, and would emergency stop randomly whilst reversing - have almost shat myself on more than one occasion. The so called "cutting edge" tablet infotainment was garbage too, I had to reboot it every 2 or 3 days just to get sound coming out of it. It is also sluggish to get media playing though, and the USB ports don't allow you to connect a pendrive with MP3s either. The seats are nothing special for a car exceeding £50K. Oh, and how many times do you have to endure "initialisation error" every time you plug it in to charge??! Its ridiculous how often the first AND second charge attempts fail. This isn't just my home, this is a multitude of chargers. And this brings me to the next point! Adaptive Cruise Control. PAY ATTENTION POLESTAR!! If a car does not have this fitted, DO NOT PUT THE BUTTONS FOR IT ON THE STEERING WHEEL!! This is a death trap for any Polestar or Volvo driver who is familiar with that steering wheel. More importantly, how many cars costing in excess of £50K don't have adaptive cruise control?!?! All in all, getting the polestar 2 was the WORST car decision I have ever made. I paid a small fortune to be the custodian of what was effectively a featureless husk. An electric Ariel Atom. I am now back onto driving the dinosaur juice unfortunately, but my Lexus CT200h is fully functional, comfortable and all the features ACTUALLY WORK.

This is definitely a UK-centric review and that's fine. For those of us in snowier icy climates, RWD is an invitation to disaster. Far better to go with the AWD Polestar set up with decent winter tires. IMO, after three winters, I can say it's probably the best winter performance car I've driven with last ICE car being a Subie WRX.

“Now shows your actual range based on your recent driving”, “parking mode activates automatically once you’re parked” Two things that were present in the Hyundai Ioniq electric since… 2016! 🤣 “Gains: two heavy motors to offer rear drive, but when you need grip, it turns off the front motor for more efficiency…” Well, one could rightly say: ditch the rear motor, keep a single efficient front motor, and there you have your efficiency gains and constant good grip 🙈😁 Regarding software, it is well-known that Mercedes and Renault (Megane e-tech) currently have some of the best software on board. Sorry Jack, not impressed 😂 Their sustainability goals on the contrary are great 👍🏻

I just bought a Model 3 RWD version over the P2 because the P2 in the US is significantly more expensive and doesn't qualify for the IRA tax rebate of $7500. If both those things weren't true, I would've picked the Polestar hands down.
