If people began to plug their ears and blind fold their eyes, in Bishop Sheen's day, there very well might have been an encyclical on the matter denouncing it as a violation of the natural law. Today, on the other hand, we would hear endlessly about those on the "periphery," the environment, and the need to modify praxis in false mercy. Strange times.
