We didn't know either. It wasn't until our second visit that we realized Panama Viejo was different from Casco Viejo. It's a very historic city! Glad you liked the hat! I ruined my previous Panama hat a couple of year ago, I was happy to come back to get another :)

Hola, just a heads up, Panamá Viejo was not sacked by the Spanish themselves. It was sacked by Captain Henry Morgan. The Spanish had to move to a better strategic spot in the city, currently known as Casco Viejo. Scenery is lovely.

I lived there in 96-98. Miss it alot. Beautiful country. Great fishing, great food, fun night life, cool shopping district. If i had the money i would retire there.

Yes, we weren't guests at the Marriott and could go to the bar. We stayed at the Hard Rock, but it definitely looked like many people went up to the bar without staying there.

Panama City - the "Dubai of Central America". Ok, there are not that many attractions as in real Dubai but as well a lot of high and impressive skycrapers. There are plenty of great hotels and many good restaurants and bars. Unfortunately you cannot swim in the sea in Panama City - only far outside of town its possible. I suggest to stay in the Financial District or Paitilla. Safe areas, most hotels and restaurants are there. The old town "casco viejo" is not that impressive as described in this video. You can spend there a few hours but there is not that much to see or to do - and avoid the bad part of the old town! Its really dangerous, dirty, a lot of crime, prostitution and drugs!

Curious when you were in Panama City last? We were there the first time a couple of years ago and felt the same way, but then we returned this year and it is evolving quickly. There is a lot of construction going on and it is transforming fast.

@@ThePlanetD I was there first time in 2016 - and since that once every year. My last visit was 2 weeks ago. Luckily I was able to leave before they closed it for Europeans - right now as a European you cannot enter into Panama anymore! Within these 4 years I haven't seen much changes. It still looks pretty much the same. It was certainly different 20 years ago. My father was in Panama City as a young man in 1963 (!!), he still has some old photos. By that time it was for sure a completely different city. -:)

@@globaltraveller6418 I've lived in Panama all of my life and can see where you are coming from, but Casco Viejo is really a fantastic place to grab something to eat, with amazing restaurants and coffee shops. It also has great museums and people there. I disagree with the fact that you can't spend more than a few hours in Casco. I can spend a whole day!
