Having fun on a 60 les paul!! How to get lots of tones without pedals.

Every so often someone says exactly what I've been thinking, and you just did it. Pedals are effects. Bingo. So glad I'm not bonkers. Give me a wah, a fuzz and an amp with reverb and tremolo and I'm done. No pedalboard, no power supply (just batteries) and no cables getting tied up in knots and tripping me over. I still like watching That Pedal Show though... :-)

Only more recently, I started to follow your work. High 5 man! Great guitarist, with a great sound, tone and feeling. Why do people need to make so many comparisons...!? You're top of top! Period.

JD Simo has been my inspiration for awhile now.phrasing,technique,tone......too many admirations to list.id give anything to get one good hour face to face lesson with this guy.ive been playing 25 years and can't touch this guy.hes a powerhouse.and I also believe is far,far better than bonnomassa.

Just got to see you for the first time at Pomeroy on the 18th. KILLER!! Best power trio rock I've heard since '75. Sure hope you same 3 guys stick together and keep blastin it out. I've been playing resophonic guitar for about 35 years but I was a rocker as a teenager. You guys take me back. Started playing electric guitar a couple years ago...better late than never! Hope to see you again soon!!

Fabulous playing,JD. The problem with using only an amp for your Overdrive tones,as preferable as it may be,is that we’re not all playing venues that will allow/tolerate a loud amp,however small it is.I’ve played my Diaz-built Deluxe Reverb for 37 years,& have gotten the “turn down” the whole time. Hence,pedals.Fortunately,David Barber makes pedals that react as amp-like as possible,so the knobs on my guitars can work for tone & texture. And let’s face it;it’s in your hands first & foremost!

JD , I think you're one of my favourite guitarist now. Great play , tone and feeling with EVERY guitar you used in this year , better than Bonamassa IMHO.

Smokes Bonomasa!!! Bonomassa is one of the most boring guitar players around!!! This guy is the real deal he just needs to write some better songs and he will. "I'd Rather Die in Vain" is brilliant but hes running into the same problem Jeff Beck had in the 60's: lack of great original songs. My god what a player though.

You mentioned the new Supro Dual Tone amp that you are using in this demo and I'm a huge Yardbirds fan too, especially Page era 'Little Games' and first Zeppelin album and I would humbly request a video on your take on Zep I amp tones with one of your Teles and maybe also demo your Supa Fuzz which is similar to Page's '66 SolaSound Tonebender in the course of said clip? Of course Zep I amp tones are loaded with Internet controversy...some are fairly straightforward like the "I Can't Quit You Baby", some are probably dependent on mid-range enhanced mic placement (like say the basic rhythm sound on most of the record-...rhythm tracks on "Good Times Bad Times", basic track on "How Many More Times", basic track on "Communication Breakdown", basic track of "Dazed"...cheers and I hope to catch Simo in Houston someday!

I use my old sgs and my old les paul through my old Marshalls, got three 1972 marshall super leads 100 watts. And a 1970 Marshall major, some old cabinets and i think a 77' hiwatt 50 watt. No pedals, it's all in the fingers and how to control your guitar with these amps.. I never use pedals.. so much better and a real test to see how well you can play through these honest sounding guitars and amps! Sounds good Simo, good sounding burst! my 60' burst sounds quite alike!
@1388Anthony19 жыл бұрын
A vintage amp especially Marshalls are like instruments themselves. All I use is a reverb pedal and a treble booster but depending what type of room im in I don't even use those half the time.
@1388Anthony19 жыл бұрын
A 70 Major? That's a rare beast. Blackmore's amp one of my all time favorites. My 50 watter is loud as shit, that's really got to move some air. Nothing like the raw power of a dimed marshall. All you need is a volume and a tone control on the guitar. Yeah you are right those are honest amps but that's how you get the dynamics.
@lars47388 жыл бұрын
You can't honestly say it's all fingers when you need a real burst and the rarest amps in existence ;)

Why so few views? Pedals are an addiction. They never sound as good as the studio manipulated dealer demos do. I got stuck at a blues jam one night without my pedals, no time to set them up, best thing that ever happened to me. Never took my pedals to the jam again. JD is an amazing player, I like his older videos that are more classic blues rock than the swampy stuff of late. Haven't seen much lately......Covid really messed things up for musicians.

So this sounds like underwound alnico 2? Also you know what, you are the first person ever in a guitar demo, to mention the sheer awesome that is middle position and why. You can get more tones out of the middle position than any other. In fact I have used more or less only the middle position my entire life.

Much better Boreomassa. I have been plugging straight in to my 71 Marshall JMP 50 watt lately. I have always used my vol/tone but when its played through a quality tube amp thats cranked you really get some great dynamics. I'm a P90 guy ive been running my old Casino with Lollar 50's Winds straight in to the marshall and it fucking sings. Or my SG Junior i love 1 pickup really makes you use those controls and alter the way you pick. I still love a strat with a good fuzz face though.

JDs phrasing is way more authentic but still personal ,than bonamassas. Bonams phrasing is more like a fusion of a lot of other guys styles. He's still a shit hot player tho!! And nice dude. But I prefer JDs playing for my taste. I think he's going to end up being a famous guitarist.
@imannonymous77075 жыл бұрын
He already is....love this guy hes got an old soul. Speed dont mean dik , but hes got that too ...but his quest for pure tone well its second to none....and his phrasing ,his intonation his vibrato these skills are the foundation that jd built his house....gotta love jd

I understand where you are coming from in running the amp flat out and adjusting the guitar ! BUT it becomes very loud and if you play in small surroundings they want to kill you !! That is why OD pedals work as you can get near that sound at lower volumes ..
@MarshallAmpMan6 жыл бұрын
agreed in the '70's I used to play the clubs with a Twin at about volume 7... now days if I play a Blues Junior I can't even play it up to 7 otherwise the owners complain, audience too

i often thought of posting a vid that explains alot of what he's sayin but im just not that good. Alot of this stuff i have just naturally picked up on over 30 years or so....i really use the diff positions to pick on the guitar. i love on old fender amps just setting my guitar on the neck pickup with the guitar treble maxed out and the guitar volume on 6-8, but then diming all the amps knobs and setting the trem to slow and the verb low
