@@bnzzai4882 You don't have to believe me, just look it up. You are mispronouncing 'Mecklenburg'. That is a bit ironic in this context. Fact is many Germans mispronounce names of places in Germany. Place names are usually older than the current rules of orthography. You find that a lot. 'Soest' is pronounced with a long 'o' and not an 'ö'. 'Duisburg' is pronounced with a long 'ü'. 'Troisdorf' has a long 'o'. And 'Mecklenburg' has a long 'e'. Those are historical spellings that don't conform to modern orthography.

13:50 actually those are just “special edition coins“. Every year another state gets featured on the 2€-coin. The “standard 2€- coin“ in Germany shows the german eagle. Also those coins are of course not coined by the individual states but by the federal government. Great video as always and don't worry about your pronounciation. It's actually pretty good :)

The V in germanic rooted terms and names is pronounced F Vater (father), vier (four), Vogel (bird), vorüber/vorbei (over), Vetter ((male) cousin), Hannover, Volk (people), Volkswagen, Volksmusik (folk music), Voest Alpine (name of an austrian steel company), Otto von Bismarck, Ludwig van Beethoven .... The V in latin (including french as a romance language) rooted words and names (used in German) are pronounced like an English V (or as a German W) Violett (violet), Victor, Virus, veritabel, Vera, Volatilität (volatility), nervös (nervous), Vitamin (vitamine) P.S.: The Z always is pronounced TS Hohenzollern (royal dynasty), Zoll (toll, customs, duty, inch), Zoo / Zoologischer Garten (zoo), Ziege (goat), Zar (tsar).... Erfurt stayed a part of Prussia until 1947 (abolishment of Prussia through the four Allied Victory powers of World War II), so well through the whole Weimar Republic. It only became a part of Thuringia during the years 1947 until 1952 (abolishment of the states in the GDR in 1952) and than since 1990. Erfurt is also only since 1990 the capital of Thuringia, from 1920 until 1952 the capital of Thuringia was Weimar.

For those who are interested: The Flag of Schleswig-Holstein contains the Blue from the Lions of the Coat of Arms from the Former Duchy of Schleswig and the White and Red from the Coat of Arms of the former Duchy of Holstein. The Flag itself was never official since 1848 (cause the two duchies was seperated but ruled from the danish King, Schleswig as Part of Denmark and Holstein as the Duch of Holstein which Was Part of the german confederacy). As 1848 the people of Schleswig and Holstein have rebelled against the danish King they used this flag for their cause, and in the danish language this flag is still called the rebell flag. For those who are verry interested in: In old medieval times, the King of Denmark and Charlemange decided that the northern Part of Germania should be go until the River of Eider. So there was formed the Duchy of Schleswig (northern Part) and Duchy of Holstein (southern Part). Then border conflicts openned up cause the People of Schleswig and Holstein always felled connected and Denmark had interests in Holstein, and the german Emperor sometimes had interests in Schleswig, as in the middle of the 15th Century a treaty was signed. The treaty was mainly about that Schleswig and Holstein should never ever be seperated. There Was formed the Well known sentence (at least in Schleswig-Holstein) "Up eewig ungedeelt" (forever undevided). That has meant the Duchy of Schleswig got a little more Autonomy but Was still under the rule of the danish Kingdom, and the Duchy of Holstein (Part of the Holy Roman Empire) was ruled by the Duch of Holstein which also had to be the danish King. For centuries this was a good treaty, until the german confederacy was formed. Holstein remained Part of the germany in terms of the Confederacy still inder danish rule, but Denmark and the Confederacy maked the Real that Schleswig (mainly habitted by german speaking people) and Holstein has to have been ruled equally. 1848 as german revolutionaries tried to unite the german confederacy to the first reich, Problemes came up. They wanted to give germany a constitution, and Part of it was that all german states had to have an own regional condtitution, therefore also Holstein. But the danish King was not interested in condtitution at all. Since Holstein was not a Main Part of Denmark he agreed to give Holstein a Condtitution. But since Schleswig and Holstein had to be rulled equally also Schleswig (Part of core Denmark) had to get a condtitution too. But that would have meant the danish King agrees to have constituions in the core land of Denmark and would strength Parlaments and liberal forces. So he decided to give holstein the condtitution but not Schleswig, which upsetted Schleswig and Holstein people where they decided to rebell against Denmark with the help of the german reich. The war was lost (also die to the failed Revolution in Germany) and Holstein was connected more to Denmark. 1864 (nobody knows exactly why) the new formed german Confederacy (mainly ruled from Prussia and Austria) decided to fight a war for the german People in Schleswig and Holstein, faughted a short blody war, and Austria got the Duchy of Holstein, Prussia the Duchy of Schleswig. Since Schleswig and Holstein are devided once more (but this time under two german rulers at last) Prussia used the cause to unify Schleswig and Holstein as war cause against Austria (politically the war was to kick Austria out of the german Confederacy so that Prussia remained as Single big Power, the 2nd of 3 steps to the unification of germany). Short Things first: Prussia has won the war, uniteded Schleswig and Holstein to the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein and for the first, Schleswig and Holstein were truely united at last. After the lost first World war, the People of Schleswig got the right to vote weither Schleswig should remain german or go back to Denmark. The upper half votes mainly for Denmark, the lower half voted for Germany. So they divided Schleswig into Northern Schleswig (Part of Denmark with a German minority) and Southern Schleswig (remaining in Germany in the State of Schleswig-Holstein) with a danish minority. The danish Minority has it's own Party, and since they are a recognized minority in germany the danish minority Party has to be represented in all Parlaments were they are able to vote and get voted (actually it is just the State Parlament of Schleswig-Holstein for now, but I have heared they want to take Part of the federal election this year and as soon as they get 1% the danish minority will be represented in the Bundestag xD). Thats enough, hope you have something interesting learned about my Homeland Schleswig-Holstein :D

The part about Mecklenburg is a bit too short. The 5 stripes are from the two old Mecklenburg flags blue / yellow / red and the pomeranian blue / white flag. The two bull heads (1219) in the coat of arms stand for Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

Well I think there is a bit of truth to the Legend. As far as I know the pagans had sacred groves that were inhabited by white horses as they were considered holy to Frey and Freya. So that might be why all three of our tribes ( Westfalen, Engern und Ostfalen) still have them in their coat of arms.

Just to clear something up: German euro coins have the german eagle on their back, most of them anyway. There are a Limited number of Clubs that are produced to celebrate something special. These "special coins" include a fairly limited number of state specific coins as shown in the video, but there are also coins with motives about the Olympic Games, celebrating our friendship with France or showing famous politicans and former chancellors.

The 8th star in the Thuringian coat of arms represent Erfurt and some other areas, which when Thuringia was founded in 1920 still belonged to Prussia. After the reconstitution of Thuringia in 1990 they were added to the state and color of arms. The only place free on the shield was just above the lions tail and this resulted in the somehow heraldically irregular pattern of the stars.

13:46 Those are only special commemorative coins, though. Rather rare to encounter them. Other countries in the Eurozone mint such as well, celebrating their culture and history, with vastly different numbers in circulation (some of them becoming real collector's items). I think every member is allowed to make up to two new commemorative coins each year (used to be only one). In Germany, we have this Bundesländer series, where every year one of the states gets its coin, depicting a famous building from that region. But the Euros with the standard backsides are waaay more common.

At 13:00 you are right with the 7 stars. Before 1920 in the historical region of Thuringia, were many rulers, which became sovereign. There were several duchies of the Ernestines, mainly two principalities of Reuß and two principalities of Schwarzburg: 1. Großherzogtum Sachsen(-Weimar) 2. Herzogtum Sachsen-Meiningen, 3. Herzogtum Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha 4. Herzogtum Sachsen-Altenburg, 5. Fürstentum Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, 6. Fürstentum Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. 7. Volksstadt Reuß (which united the two principalities of Reuß-Gera (Younger Line) and Reuß-Greiz (Older Line). The eight star represents the former Prussian territories like Nordhausen, Erfurt, Ziegenrück (Provinz Sachsen) and Schmalkalden (Provinz Hessen). In 1920 Prussia stil existed and so Weimar became the capital of Thuringia, not the bigger and more important Erfurt, which is nower days the capital of Thuringia. One supplement to Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha: Only Gotha joined "Great Thuringia" not Coburg, which became a part of Bayern.

Interesting video and well informed I think. The eighth star in the coat of arms of Thuringia is there today, because Thuringia was enlarged after WW2. Part of the former Prussian province of Saxony (the rest of which is now part of Saxony-Anhalt) was added to Thuringia, thus eliminating a lot of Prussian enclaves and exclaves in Prussia that Thuringia had, when it was founded after WW1. Your pronunciation of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was quite good. The only little thing: Burg or ...burg is pronounced like 'boorg', in German easily distinguishable from Berg or ...berg (as in Nürnberg), which is prounounced like'bairg'.

The eighth star in the new coat of arms of Thüringen stands for the former parts of Prussia that were added after WW2. When Thüringen was formed in 1920 large regions inside belonged to the Prussian Province of Saxony, which are today the northern parts of Saxony-Anhalt and Thüringen.

Small correction on Bavaria: The Bavarian coat of arms is actually a fusion of the coat of arms of Frankonia, Swabia, Bavaria and Oberpfalz with the Wittelsbach pattern in the middle. (I believe you just showed the Wittelsbach Version or a small coat of arms) Apart from that it is commonly assumed that white and blue refer to the colours of the sky (The Bavarian national anthem contains a line "And preserve for us, the colours of our sky; white and blue")

What also might be interesting is the fact that there is a 'hidden' bundesland in Germany called Franconia, it's located in northern bavaria but does not really identify itself as bavarian. It therefore also has its own flag which is red & white. If all former franconian regions in germany would be their own federal state Franconia would be the seventh largest Bundesland in Germany.

The eighth star on the coat of arms of Thuringia represents the parts of Thuringia that were previously part of Prussia or Hesse. After WW2 some parts of Prussia were incorporated into Thuringia. Previous attempts to do this failed because of Prussian refused to give up the Land. Erfurt for example was part of Prussia until 1945.

Almophan vi Brittania is correct. The coat of arms of Thuringia in the times of the Weimarer Republik showed seven silver stars on a red field. The eighth star were added after the unification with the former Prussian parts of Thuringia in 1945. The both parts of Reuß (elder and junior line) were united befor the unification of all Thuringian states in 1920, so they were counted as one.
@almophant1673

@@volkerwendt3061 The eighth star still represents the Prussian parts of Thuringia. Quote Wikipedia. The article is called Thüringer_Landeswappen. (The English Version doesn't mention the eighth star specifically. It only says that the eight stars represent the former Divisions of Thuringia and which parts are represented by the first seven stars.)

Thuringia had 7 stars in their old flag (Weimar Republic), because it was made up from the 7 former monarchies. But Prussia had terretories sprinkled in. After 1990 when the State of Thuringia reformed the former prussian terretories became the 8th star.

Nicely done! The coat of arms of Thüringen has 8 stars because the 'recreated' (1990) state of Thüringen consists of 8 former states. You have the ones that formed the first state of Thüringen (1920) ... Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, Sachsen-Gotha, Sachsen-Meiningen, Sachsen-Altenburg, Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and the 'Volksstaat Reuß' (which was an amalgamtion of Reuß jüngere Line and Reuß ältere Linie) plus the former Prussian province of Erfurt - the final and eighth star. Erfurt was still part of Prussia when Thüringen was first formed and when the state of Prussia ceased to exist, the province of Erfurt was integrated into a 'Bezirk' (the GDR/"East Germany" abolished the federal states). Only in 1990 the former province of Erfurt was finely joint to the rest of Thüringen.
