People are freaking out about powdered alcohol, but I wasn’t convinced they understood the science behind it. So I tested their concerns. Will it get you crazy drunk? Will people snort it? Watch and see! -Brent

Notes: Let’s state the obvious here: this is not the commercial version of powdered alcohol. It’s a very DIY version that was suggested by Popular Science (see link below). The version that is slated to go on sale this summer will almost certainly use a higher proof alcohol (151 is as high as we could legally get in California), so it’ll be a bit more efficient. There’s also a strong chance that it will use a cyclodextrin powder instead of the maltodextrin we used. Cyclodextrin is essentially a ring of sugar molecules that can trip liquids inside. Right now food-grade cyclodextrin is very difficult to find for consumers and it’s quite expensive, so we went with maltodextrin. We acknowledge that there’s a chance that cyclodextrin would dissolve a bit faster, but we maintain that it would still be prohibitively slow for spiking a drink. Everything else basically holds true. For the snorting section, for instance, that is the real quantity you would need to get one drink’s worth.

DrSpooglemon Huh? When you dry something into a powder, all the water leaves and it becomes smaller but the ingredient is still there. Therefore, when you make a powder out of pure alcohol it has to become super concentrated. It's like if you heat up an entire bottle of rum you get left with a brown sticky substance that is like 1000 times smaller than the rum used to be, and if you keep on heating it, you get a super concentrated powder of rum cause all the water is gone. That's how it's possible. QED, as they say.

Snorting with a Clipper card! Love it!!! This guy is my favorite thing in WIRED videos. Best use case for this stuff I can imagine is camping, festivals, or other scenarios where you don't want a bunch of room-consuming spillable liquid in your pack and you can just add water upon arrival so you don't have to carry all the excess liquid.

Probably wouldn't make a world of a difference but ingesting through the nostrils (or any other mucous membrane for that matter) will get any substance much faster/more efficiently into your bloodstream, so you wouldn't have to work through 30 fat lines to get the same results.

My Uncle is a doctor and he explained to me that to get a quick hit from alcohol 7% ABV is around the correct strength to get straight into your bloodstream. If you drink stronger alcohol the body decides it is too strong and the alcohol stays in the stomach while the body finds water to dilute the strong alcohol, this takes time so the your hit is delayed.

The percentage of alcohol in that powder is probably too low to burn. Even vodka (~40%) usually doesn't instantly burn when lighted up but has to be heated first. The more probably reason why it would burn is because of a deflagration due to the powder (like flour can explode when the mixture in the air is right).

I would imagine that it would be a re-formulated version of alcohol that is a solid at room temperature, not tapioca powder saturated with vodka, that's just silly. GHB for instance, is basically alcohol in powdered form just with very slight differences in effects.

The way they do powdered alcohol it's gonna be much more concentrated that what you did. They have a special process during which alcohol get encapsulated inside tiny maltodextrin capsules. Nothing evaporates, mix easily and deliver a punch.

The alcohol is diluted in the powder because pure alcohol is a liquid. It's impossible to turn pure alcohol into a powder unless you freeze it, in which case you would have to transport it at temperatures _much_ colder than in any normal freezer. It's diluted in the powder, because the powder is what dilutes it. You can't saturate the powder any further because the alcohol will just flow out because it's a liquid. This powdered alcohol is an inherently stupid idea.

This is elementary science, Proper. Powder, especially alcohol powder, does not have the same physical properties as liquid alcohol. At best you'd be using a shit ton to slightly sanitize an area and be left with a huge powdery mess that you will have to CLEAN OUT, AGAIN, in order to not have bacteria harbor in leftover powder gunk once the alcohol goes out.
