Interesting. Cats are weird and she will adjust. My boyfriend and I actually are from Michigan too and we are planning on buying our first sailboat in about a year. We also have a cat and I've been curious to see how it would be with her on the boat. Even though Georgie was a kitten when she was introduced to boats, it gives me faith that our cat will adjust to the lifestyle as well as she did. Cheers guys! It's been so fun watching your progress.

I'm amazed at all the bones in that graveyard! Just looking at what you guys had to do to prepare to sail again would make me take a long second look at trying to repair any one of these. Just doing some minor work on my 19 foot runabout took longer, and required more work, than I intended to do when I first bought it; although the price was right, or so I thought! Anyway, glad to see you are nearing completion and will soon be on your way again. Looking forward to seeing your new adventures. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Isn't that always the problem? You never think it will take as long as it does. We thought we were smart when we got here by estimating it would take 2 times as long to do the refit as we thought. It turns out it was 4 times as long! Oh well. lesson learned. 🙂

Hi Guys, love your vlog and we are followers especially after Irma.... thank you again for your drone fly over after the hurricane. It certainly settled our nerves to see that our Layla was sitting as pretty as when we left. We were in the storage yard close to Wind a Leigh and while there, a couple drove up hoping to board her but the rules won't allow if they are not the owner. The owner of this cute little vessel is in Sweden and she has been sitting there in that same spot for 10 years. He would like to sell her they said. We thought she was pretty special too but does need work. We saw you leave IT and will miss seeing your lovely boat sitting at the dock. We will look forward to following you on your adventures... crew of S/V Layla

One can cut foam with an electric carving knife--not as well as a proper foam saw, but it works OK. I buy ordinary AC fans and run them trough small inverters. Much better fans and less noise, and when on Marina power just use the AC plugs.

Those are really great prices. I'll have to keep these guys in mind. We will be needing a new mainsail in the next year or so. We have those exact Caframo fans all over our boat (four of them) and they are really nice. I have one fairly close to my head in the V-berth and I have put my face into it while it was running on more than one occasion. I am a slow learner apparently. But no serious damage so far.
@mattjohnson67167 жыл бұрын
Regarding Precision Sails; At first I thought the time they spent explaining and educating Jess and I, along with how nice and pleasant they were being, was mostly due to our "special relationship", but if you read any of the comments posted here from past customers, they really are that wonderful of a company. They truly are some of the nicest, professional people you could have the pleasure of meeting. Based on quality of staff and what sail design I have seen so far, I highly suggest reaching out to them when it's time for that mainsail. We've been using the 757s for about 10 years now, and besides always needing to be cleaned (annoying how dirty they get), have preformed flawlessly. On the last boat, the one in the v-berth was right in front of the light switch. After the first few times, I leaned to just sacrifice my hand and reach for the switch through the blades instead of contorting around. But, If you do that too many times, the leading edge brakes and unbalances the fan, creating a horrible racket. Matt
@svbarryduckworth6287 жыл бұрын
Balance of this fan is one of its weak spots. I use one for right over the galley stove and it gets sort of filthy from kitchen grease and all the dust that sticks to that and collects. Just a little bit of that smeg can effect the balance quite a bit. I have a fan that has been smacked a few too many times and I suspect that either the fan blade is warped or the shaft is slightly bent because it has a vibration/noise issue now. I wonder if replacing the blade would be a good idea. They don't cost very much, so I might just try it. I wonder if the blade is destroyed when taking it off or if it can be reused as a spare if it isn't the blade that is causing the imbalance.

Do not toss the old head sail if it is serviceable. Brand new sails can get damaged when Mother Nature and Murphy stack the deck against you. Either keep it for a backup or donate it to someone that can use it for a backup. It should be OK for broad reaches and runs for someone on a budget.

Glad to see that you developed a relationship with Precision Sails. They built my new sail this summer and you can't beat either the quality or the price. Great group of people to work with and Ron will provide all the help you need. One piece of advice though. They will provide a very detailed online quote, but if you make any changes, the quote changes and you can't get back to the original quote. Make a copy of each version, so you can do comparisons.
@PrecisionSailLoftVictoria7 жыл бұрын
So happy your new sail is working well for you. One of the downfalls of our live quoting system is that it doesn't save different versions, so you are correct, if you download the pdf file and save it you can compare pricing with different sail configurations. We are looking into improving this process.

I learned about sailing too late in life to do any. Got my pilots's license and my ham radio license and lots of radios. I like watching you two but I noticed a similarity between you and one of the younger hams I know in our club. Young and brilliant and can fix or design anything electronic. In a recent conversation between this young genius and an old veteran who recently made about 1500 radio contacts in a weekend radio contest while the younger was designing and planning his tower for a couple years now and avoiding choices the elder said "just shut up and put it up." You can't make contacts with your equipment on the ground.
@mattjohnson67167 жыл бұрын
Right before we left to start cruising, I tried to convince Jess that we should stay in Michigan and for me to get my pilots license. Jess won the debate, and here we are. For me, the planning and building are a part that I really enjoy. Cruising is great, but after three years of bouncing around, it was time to do something more with my hands and head. These two and a half years have been just what I needed to recharge the cruising batteries and once again enjoy a sunset. Matt

Make sure you put batting between the cushions and the coverings so it doesn’t cause wrinkles. Batting is that cotton sheets. It’s not to cause extra cushion but Publicate between the foam and the material.

At 7:00 is that gaff rig ferrocement? Looks a lot like a boat an acquaintance built in his front yard back in the 70's.

Beyond repair. Boats and logic are unrelated. Somebody here in Charleston got all excited about recreating an 18th century sailing vessel and was so enthusiastic about the project that a bank was convinced that financing the $4,000,000 adventure was a good idea. Once the project was completed, the parties involved found there was no way to make money with the boat in order to pay off the loan. Couple years ago the bank took possession and auctioned it off for $400,000. Any rational person could have predicted this outcome.

Idea for a future episode, You an Matt use a lot of terms that us non sailors do not know. I would love a show where you went over the major items of the boat and told us what they where like what is a dodger and so forth.

Thanks for the idea John. Maybe we'll do a special extra episode going over more of the basics of a sailboat. We've had a few similar requests Matt

I'm not sure exactly how many of these are for sale, or which ones they would be. But you should absolutely contact the broker here to see what is available. Here is a link to their site. www.yachtworld.com/bondmarine/bondmarine_0.html And thank you for becoming a patron!! 😍

Looking at the boat yard don't these owners have to pay monthly to store their boats? It can't be cheap. I'm sure you told us what it is costing you to park your boat there but I don't recall. Lots of Love
@mattjohnson67167 жыл бұрын
Storage yard is about $250 a month. Amazingly, most of the boats shown are paid up and never miss a payment. Matt

Are the botas for sale, or can you just pick one and make it yours?
@MJSailing5 жыл бұрын
They're all still privately owned. I think a lot of them are in escrow or being held in estates.

you can change the fokus point on your camera so it fokuses on a serten point in the frame.. . just a tip. love your work...
@mattjohnson67167 жыл бұрын
Alex, You're right. We've become so used to the awesome auto focus on this camera that we forget we actually have to do some work and control it ourselves sometimes. Matt

Where is this "Boat Graveyard" --?? any salvageable boats there?
@MJSailing7 жыл бұрын
Indiantown Marina, Indiantown, Florida. You could talk to the broker at Advantage Yachts and see what's available. 🙂

OK, thank very much--- you never know what is lurking in the back lots of the boat yards-- Perhaps a little gem--???

It's like watching puppies at the pound, all those once-lovely boats left to rot and decay. You should have used some sad Sarah Mclachlan tune over those images. Boat abuse should be at the least a misdemeanor offense. And I love that you're totally cool with the old sheet covers for the time being - totally a me move.

i like the style of that gemini myself but looks like a lot of work/money to get it back to safe cruising, however if there are haul numbers couldnt you do a search to find out who it was last registered to?
@MJSailing7 жыл бұрын
I'm sure the marina has all the information on the current owner, but I didn't want to invade their privacy by going that route. 😉

That Gemini Looks like mine, But mines a 2002 MC105, A days work and it will look like brand new, It just needs a good wash, Mine has sat there for 5 years due to a moron that was supposed to be repairing it, I sued him and got the contract lifted, My new repairer will have my boat finished this year, Its heart breaking waiting on others to do work for you when they have been paid and dont do the work,
@mattjohnson67167 жыл бұрын
Brian, Are you in Australia? I remember a guy with a new to him Gemini dragged anchor during a storm and had hull damage. He was suppose to get it repaired, but had a similar story to yours about a shady character repairing the hull. Matt
@BriansGemini105MC7 жыл бұрын
Yep, Thats me, Matt, Im still waiting, Glad to see yours almost back in the water, The shonky repairer cost me 25 Grand, I bought mine in Fiji, sailed it back to Bundaberg, Australia, Single handed. Learning to sail it on the way, Did 3000 Nmiles on it, then got chucked up on the beach on Broughton Island NSW hiding from the Violent storm that flattened Port Stephens, NSW, on anchor, Bent the anchor, so it was doing its job, But just not good enough, It went from dead calm, to on the beach with a foot of water inside the boat in Ten Minutes, I trucked it to Yaringa Marina in Victoria, Where it has sat since, It has had two complete new hulls . put in it, And beefed up to allow it to sit on sandy beaches with the tide out, Cheers, Brian,

Brian, Unfortuantely, I remember the whole episode from Cruisersforum. I felt horrible for you with how it all worked out, but glad to hear that your finally able to use it as intended. They're great boats and will serve you well for many, many years. Matt
@BriansGemini105MC7 жыл бұрын
The Gemini is a very safe boat, I have been in some very bad weather in it, I was at sea for 19 days, I never felt unsafe or worried with the conditions I was in, The two hulls were completely cut out including the repairs from the Shonky repairer I had first, I put piccys up of the repairs that were done on Cruiser forums, Repairs to my Gemini, I think it was called, I also put a video of it in action on youtube, Crossing the Tasman in a Gemini, Wish you both well and enjoy your sailing in our Boat, Cheers, Brian,
