This bonus clip provides some additional applications for UDE WA (arm ring) and how it can be successfully and easily applied from the rear.
Prepare to take one of the most comprehensive and detailed analyses of the throwing techniques described by Gichin Funakoshi within the pages of KARATE-DO KYOHAN. Often called the “lost throws” due to their diminishing widespread practice throughout the subsequent generations of karate students, these throwing techniques described in the 1920s and 30s by Funakoshi serve as a clear historical reference that knowledge and application of Nage Waza or throwing techniques has always been an important aspect of Karate if you are to study the art fully and completely.
In over 8 HOURS of instructional material study we will delve into the Ten throwing techniques presented by Funakoshi in Karate-do Kyohan, Ryukyu Kempo Karate and Rentan Goshin Tode Jutsu and dozens of variations and methodologies. The series includes:
The TEN THROWS of Funakoshi including BYOBU DAOSHI, KUBI WA, GYAKU TSUCHI, NODO OSAE and many more.
A PRINCIPLE BASED ANALYSIS to each technique enabling a deep technical understanding of each technique enabling you to integrate them into your practice.
Analysis of the MECHANICAL PRINCIPLES underpinning each throw to equip you to enhance all of the throwing methods within your arsenal.
Analysis of the TACTICAL & STRATEGIC PRINCIPLES which will equip you to overcome the primary lines of resistance from your opponent and consistently apply the techniques in high percentage methods of execution.
Exploration of DOZENS OF VARIATIONS, including gripping and control opponents, various atemi and variations on leg position.
Important tangential principles to support the systematic implementation of techniques including SHIMEWAZA (Chokes and Strangles) and counters to likely responses from your opponent.
A detailed HISTORICAL ANALYSIS of the throws and evaluation of the execution of throws within Karate.
Never before has so much detail been committed to film exploring these techniques and now it's fully available for you to not simply imitate the throwing techniques of Funakoshi but MASTER THEM and breathe new life into their study and practice.

I remember learning karate from my dad when I was 7 and these are the exact same throws for the same book just goes to show that this works no matter what decade you teach it.

I absolutely can't wait to come back over and visit its been far too long. I really hope everyone at your dojo is doing well and managing given the circumstances it's a crazy time. First 25 minutes or so focus on a really detailed look at some of the history and context around the throws. Can't wait to hear what you think.

Can't wait! I teach the throws from the first edition Kyohan, but there is precious little information out there on them other than the book. Your content is always so great, I learn something new everytime.

I am super excited to hear your thoughts on this then. All 9 throws from Kyohan are in there plus Nodo Osae and lots of variations plus for some of them adjacent principles to help them context more broadly for example when we look at Kubi wa (Neck ring) as well as several methods of executing the throw we then look at two high percentage strangle combinations.

Thank you. The instructional has a section dedicated to Kuzushi and then for every throw the specific methodologies of Kuzushi are discussed. In a future instructional that I have planned will expand extensively on the theory of Kuzushi. Also there is a lot more of the core theory covered throughout the members area on our website.

I just realized in Chatan Yara Kushanku, there are multiple segments in which you could incorporate these throws. One of which I definitely see in the Passai/Bassai form.

There are definitely multiple examples of nearly all these throws in Chatanyara Kushanku and so many other Kata just got to spot them but once you see them you can’t unsee it

I guess I slowly learned to look at kata as a way I might be able to sweep or throw. This is the most fun part of karate for me. I didn't even really like forms until i started applying them. I think everyone recognizes Bassai's throws. :) I had a few teachers that weren't into it, then one that was really into how into it I was. Like, if there's a hikite in a form, there's probably a grappling application. It's just finding the distance. I love the throw in this vid where you catch the punch and just throw them down by their arm. I think that's the most work-able one. The one that could be in anyone's game. If you do that and step away and let them go, they're probably not coming after you again. Their face and arm are probably messed up. You didn't even hit them... They hit the ground. It's not fair to say that's the same thing.

@@juicicles5881 Absolutely. Koma nage (or Neji Daoshi as it was called in the earlier books) is one of the most prevalent throws in kata. In fact, I would argue it is difficult to find a kata without one variation or another somewhere in it as passing to an outside position and using the reaction of the arm to apply breaking pressure is such a fundamental strategy.

@@DanielPyatt I feel like it perfectly represents karate because it kept you safe while doing a minimal amount of damage to him. Enough that the limb he threw at you can't hurt you anymore. Maybe enough that he won't ever forget it. But not enough where YOU are heading to prison for doing more than you had to. I would rather end a joint than someone's life. Mr Miyagi said "sometime, better to let man like that live" He meant "and have to live with himself". Good advice
