Hi Simon thanks again, when i did the paper i put 11 7/6 as answer for Q 2
@SimonHTT
@SimonHTT 10 ай бұрын
That has the same value as the answer, but they have asked for it as a mixed number, so you can't have an improper fraction (7/6) in there. That has the same value as 1 1/6 which when you add to 11 gives you the final answer of 12 1/6.

did they change the functional skills in 2019
@SimonHTT
@SimonHTT 3 ай бұрын
Yes. They moved some of the topics around, generally making them a bit harder. The biggest change was to introduce a non-calculator section, you used to be able to use a calculator for all of the exam.

@@the-blue-barron2791 I think there's always been invigilators required for functional skills, like with all public exams, so that shouldn't have a big impact, other than maybe adding an additional level of anxiety. That's why it's good to replicate exam conditions in advance, such as mock exams.

In calculating Question 4 (a) is non correlation
@SimonHTT

Usually these types of questions are more obvious, but this one is quite subjective. Howver, the mark scheme would give us both the mark, it accepts no correlation AND negative correlation.

hello sir, for question number 2, is 2 as whole number and 1/2 as fraction still right?
@SimonHTT
@SimonHTT 3 ай бұрын
I'm not sure which part of the question you mean, if you're talking about the final answer then no, it would really need to be given as I have or equivalent, i.e. 12 and something equal to 1/6.

Hi Simon, is there any chance you can explain question 2 please what I end up doing is 2 5/6 + 9 1/3 the first part i work it out as 17/6 and the second part I work it out as 28/3 then I add the top and bottom to give me 45/9 I know afterwards I need to make the answer as a mixed number which I end up doing 4 9/9 which Is wrong but for the 17/6+28/3= 45/9 can it be done this way, also I don't understand when you had to multiply the 28 X 2 and the 3 X2.
@SimonHTT
@SimonHTT Жыл бұрын
Hi @bigkbasha, unfortunately you're making a classic mistake when adding fractions and forgetting that you can only add fractions if the denominators are the same. If they're not the same then we need to make them the same by scaling up one or both of the fractions. That's what I'm doing with the 28/3. I'm doubling the top and bottom to get 56/6. It has the same value as 28/3 but because we now have a denominator of 6 we can add it to 17/6. The next important thing to remember is that when we do add fractions (once the denominators are the same) we only add the top numbers (numerators). For example, if we had 1/2 + 1/2 we would get 2/2 = 1. Otherwise we would end up with 2/4 = 1/2 which clearly can't be right. Hope that helps.
@bigkbasha
@bigkbasha Жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, thank you for your reply. So Ideally for the 2nd part, the reason why the top and bottom are multiplied by 2 is because the bottom part of the 2nd fraction has to be the same as the bottom part of the first fraction. And regarding adding the fractions any fraction added the number at the bottom stays the same as the original. @@SimonHTT

Somehow, and I don’t know how, I managed to pull it out of the bag, as I passed my FS Maths 🧮 Level 2 in April 2024 (literally 2 weeks before my 40th birthday so I can say I passed it before I got old. I passed at the second attempt, after initially failing in January. This despite all the disadvantages I had to endure as regards to my visual impairment which consequently meant I need larger font resources and a in-class scribe (to do my reading & writing for me), as well as emotional issues surrounding Maths as well. After initially failing, I was permitted to do my exam during the Easter holidays and I think having the quieter environment helped me (as well as being able to take breaks and the extra-time I was given) but I eventually passed and my certificate now takes pride of place alongside my GCSE English Grade C I attained in school. I know Level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE Grade C, but I may consider doing the actually GCSE in the future if I feel I can do it. Videos like this and Math With Mr J also helped as, due to vision loss, in more a visual learner and her more from watching videos rather reading text, which can be a challenge for me.

Thanks Simon for your useful videos , have learnt lots from you. I have heard that in order to pass Edexcel functional skills level 2 exams , you need to pass both papers and if you get low marks in Section A and fail it but get high marks in Section B , still you have failed the exam . Is it true? I believe both papers numbers counts as total to announce if someone is passed or not . Can you please confirm this ?

They are separate exam boards but tend to be the 2 most popular boards for functional skills maths. The content and topics covered are broadly similar, the biggest difference is probably the style and format of their questions.

Hello Simon,city and guilds functional skill maths level 2 and Ed Ed excel functional skill maths level 2 same exam or different exam???
@SimonHTT
@SimonHTT Жыл бұрын
They will both give you the same qualification, test the same skills and are probably equally respected exam boards, but the exams are different. However, the main difference is the format and style. Different people will have different views as to which of the 2 exam boards are 'easier' but I think it's just personal preference. Most of the time, if you're doing the qualification via a college you won't have any choice in the exam board being used. I always think it's useful to look at other exam boards, if only to get exposure to a greater variety of practice questions.

Hi Simon Thanks for all videos very helpfull just one question Calculator one Q7 the first bit is right 1.00-0.45=0.55 but than How can the probablity will be 0.7 when you have to take away from 0.45-0.3=0.15
@SimonHTT
@SimonHTT 9 ай бұрын
They're 2 different things you're looking at, so the probabilities need to add to 1 for each little section. The first part is whether it's a skirt or a dress, the second bit is whether it is long or short, they are 2 independent points. That's why when we want to work out the probability involving both parts we multiply them together.

Hi Simon, can you please clarify this, the answer I got in non calculator Q.2 is 11 7/6 not 12 1/6 though i understood how you got your answer. First of all i added the whole numbers separately (9+2 = 11) then i found a common denominator of 6 and 3, which is 6 and got 7/6. then my final answer is 11 7/6 Is this correct?
@SimonHTT
@SimonHTT Жыл бұрын
My method might seem a bit long winded but the reason I do it is to avoid having to do an extra step at the end, which is what you're missing and so losing the final mark. The question asks for the answer as a mixed number, which means a whole number and a proper fraction (i.e. numerator smaller than the denominator). You have got 7/6 in your answer, which is an improper fraction, so needs to be converted into a mixed number, 1 1/6. The whole number then needs to be added to the 11 so you end up with 12 1/6. So, while you can still get to the correct answer your way I think if you turn everything into improper fractions at the start, and back to mixed at the end, there's fewer things to remember.

Many thanks, merci beaucoup , muchas gracias, Matt, you are the best. I have a question about NO calculator question # 2 If you can check for me, please. I think the answer is that Shona wasn´t correct because Erica's range is also higher than Shona's (14.3 - 12.90 = 1.4). I don´t know if the answer will be that Erica has higher median and range scores. Erica is right.
@SimonHTT
@SimonHTT 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comments. Note this is Q2 in the calculator section. You are correct that Erica has a higher range but we're not interested in the range for this question, only the average. There are 3 ways to look at averages, mean, median and mode. While range is often worked out as well and is related to them, it is a measurement of how spread out (or consistent) the values are and NOT a measurement of average. Also, it is really important to work out what the want you to do, and here the question has asked you to show how they could both be correct, not who you think is correct. But it's good that you were trying to look at other ways to interpret the question as they can ask questions in slightly different ways, which then changes how you need to answer them.

Hi Simon, for Q2 for the calculator section if I add in Shona’s median score of 13.2 is less than Erica’s median score of 13.3, and Shona’s mean score of 13.5 is higher than Erica’s mean score of 13.4 after I have sorted out the value for the median and the mean will that be enough or does it need to be worded differently.

That's al you need. You've showed that both of them can be right, depending on which average you use.
