This video triggered a long-forgotten memory I have of eating dinner at an El Torito in the late '90s with my dad (a fundie preacher). He solemnly warned me to never, under any circumstances, allow the US government to tattoo a barcode to my hand or wrist. ESPECIALLY not to any part of my face, because then there was no possibility of repenting and last minute making it into heaven. I was like 11. My dad isn't super proud of my life choices. And yeah, I might have pierced my nipples and had an abortion, but I have never one time let the government tattoo me with barcodes. And I never will. And I think you can at least be proud of me for that, DAD.

I have a weird Kent Hovind story. My friend's dad was/is really into Kent Hovind and his message. I was like surrogate daughter to this family and so 15 years ago, my friend's dad dragged his wife, three kids, and me to see Hovind in a city about an hour away. Kent Hovind started with a prayer for "those kids that got killed today." The event he was referring to was the Virginia Tech Massacre, which had happened that very same day, about 8 hours earlier. Thus began the longest three hour lecture in my life. Hovind has this talking point where he says that teaching evolution leads kids to believe they are animals and that makes them sin and kill each. He said something to the effect of "We saw that happen today!" So he literally that the Virginia Tech shooting would not have happened if the perpetrator had been taught creationism in school said less than 12 hours after the tragedy had occurred . Then he proceeded to show images from the Columbine to prove that point. It's been over 15 years since that night, I was and still am horrified about he literally exploited the victims hours after their death to prove his message was right.

I unfortunately got to go to Dinosaur Adventure Land over this summer because my mom and her husband are FUCKING INSANE... anyway Kent and the whole place was actually terrifying, and I did not sleep for the two days we were there. I found it to be very sketchy and weird. When we arrived, it was 9-10pm and the entire place was a mile into the woods along a dirt road. Kent was immediately creepy toward my sister and me. He drew smiley faces on our fingers (she is 14 and I am 18) and said he was 'the boogie man'. The guests stayed in these cabins that were barely functional and we shared a 'communal' bathroom with strangers... The food was also gross. There is also an insane number of animals there. There was a poor macaw named Montie who was pacing and screaming the entire time. There was also a gross amount of stray sickly dogs wandering around. I was also KICKED by a donkey. Without a doubt, there is definitely illegal and abusive stuff going on down there.

About the two blind men poem: if you saw two blind men who did not believe sight was real, there's a BUNCH of things you could do to prove it to them. You could tell them to choose between a plethora of multicolored identically shaped, sized and textured balls, shuffle them behind their back and then guess which ball was originally in which hand. You could ask them to put up a random number of fingers to your face and guess the correct number without touching them. You could feed them sour patch kids and guess in advance the flavor they're going to taste. Empirical evidence that sight is, in fact, real. Such simple empirical evidence simply can't be brought up for the existence of God, because the existence of God is not an empirical problem, but a philosophical one. In the end, no one can prove or disprove the existence of God, unlike sight. This is such a dumb metaphor...

For anyone legitimately wondering, The Shack is about a man questioning his faith after his young daughter is kidnapped and murdered by a pedophile while on family vacation. God is portrayed as a black woman for most of the book (and film) because the main character's father was abusive and God felt he wouldn't want a father figure to help him through his grief (as I recall, in the movie at least, the only time God is portrayed as a man is when they collect MC's daughter and bury her, because "this is the time you need a father" or whatever). It's one of my mom's fav books (she's nondenom) so I'm very familiar with it. Just wanted to add in that context to really drive home how typical of a Christian novel this is. It isn't special, the only new thing it adds is that God is genderless and can change the way they are perceived to best suit the person they are trying to reach.
@morbidmusing
@morbidmusing 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a beautiful choice on the authors’ part to have God choose to appear to MC as a woman. As a plot device alone it’s a very powerful choice, but it also portrays a God that’s intriguing to secular readers like myself
@QuantumBoogaloo

@@morbidmusing I didn’t read the book, but I did like the movie. There was actually a lot of characterization given to all three members of the trinity. For example Jesus was just kind of a normal dude (I think it said something about like “since he’s fully human and fully god, he has a much better understanding of people and is much more approachable”). It was pretty good iirc, especially for a Christian movie (I’m Christian, I’ve seen a lot of them, and there are maybe 5 that I’d say are good). Been a while since I’ve seen it though.

Hey, Jen, Kent really did have a theme park in his Pensacola backyard. He'd bought several houses in the neighborhood & had DAL in the collective backyard. He fought with either the city or the county on whether he needed building permits, finally settling and paying a fine. DAL (and Creation Science Ministries) closed down after Kent was convicted of tax evasion and structuring in 2006 because the property was forfeited to the federal government to pay the fine he was assessed for structuring. While Kent was in federal prison, he pestered his son Eric to buy back those properties as they one by one came up for federal auction. When Kent got out, he just expected Eric to give everything back, but Eric didn't. Kent also expected Jo to just start sleeping with him like nothing was wrong after prison, and she was all NOPE. He ended up leaving Pensacola and going to Repton, AL and setting up the new DAL because his family had grown spines and told him they weren't going to do his bidding. The gates shown in the video were originally in Pensacola and then trucked out to Repton. That's just a tiny bit of the soap opera / legal nutcase that is Kent Hovind's life.

Hey, Jen! I have a bit of a feeling that the “Beep! Turn around and sit down!” commands are attention-keepers. When the kids that are listening hear the “Beep!” They follow the instructions. The ones that aren’t listening, maybe dozing off and zoning out, snap back into attention, and they listen a bit better to hear the next “Beep!” Making kids do a physical action to keep their attention on you, AND express energy when they’re getting antsy, seems to work better (at least for me) on keeping their attention. Sometimes, they also think it’s fun and that makes them want to keep doing it, which makes them pay attention. That’s just my theory, though.

I didn’t finish my teaching or early childhood development degree, so take what I say with a grain of salt: but I feel like Kent (or whoever taught him this technique) kinda missed the point. When I had a job where I would design and teach lesson plans for extracurricular classes for homeschooled kids, I incorporated this technique by incorporating silly songs that required hand motions or standing, turning around, etc. But the song reviewed what we’d just learned. I taught a language and one of the things I did was teach animals and we’d pretend to be that animal. Or when learning foods, we’d pretend to eat that food. It got the kids moving so I wasn’t just standing in front of a bunch of 6-year-olds lecturing at them, but it also reinforced what they learned. The “Beep! Stand up! Turn around! Sit-down!” has nothing to do with what Kent is trying to teach. So the competitive kids will just listen for the “Beep!” and tune out everything else, and the kids that are likely to doze a bit will just tune it _all_ out and wait until the kids around them hop to their feet. I know I would have probably done the latter (I didn’t like science topics as a kid). And maybe it’s just my ADHD, but does anyone else have trouble remembering what he said _before_ the “Beep!” ? Especially when he interrupts himself with it? Headache inducing.

38:47 Thank you so much for acknowledging that victims are not treated well culturally. Neither are witnesses. It nearly brought me to tears when you expressed your respect and admiration for Cindy Hovind. As an ex fundamentalist who was publicly outed in court and exploited by true crime culture, I lost my home, my job, my family, and my privacy. I imagine Cindy Hovind and people like her have felt similarly. Being fundamentalist means that you are at a higher risk of losing support if you are named and shamed. I’m working on a project about my experiences with true crime culture, fundamentalism, and being outed as a polyamorous switch as a witness for a federal murder trial. Hearing someone with a platform acknowledge that things are difficult for victims and people who choose to use their voice at he risk of their safety encourages me to continue my project. Anyone who can be brave enough to use their voice and to defend people at their own expense has my utmost respect and gratitude. There are many such people in this comment thread already. ❤ (Edit: 11/11/22 for time stamp correction)

Kent Hovind's VHS tapes were some of the only media I was allowed to consume on Sundays as a homeschooled child, and I once saw him speak live in my hometown when I was in elementary school. We called him "Brother Hovind," which was especially odd since we didn't call anyone else Brother...just him. He fell off my radar for a few years, and finding out that he was in prison and was truly a massive piece of shit when I was a freshman in college was a huge blow to my faith and very instrumental in my initial deconversion. So I posted to my fb about it when we got home, (cause that's just how we used the fb back then 🤣) and a distant relative commented saying that she was right and that the book of Job talks about men walking with behemoths blah blah blah and about 300 comments from friends and other family members later I got a private message from said relative that she would pray for my lost soul 😖😆 I had totally forgotten about that whole debacle until this episode. Important note: the OLD Dinosaur Adventure Land WAS in Florida and it was actually fun and accessible to half-normal families. The NEW one (post-prison) is creepy dump in the middle of nowhere and very culty. I grew up going to Dinosaur Adventure Land in Pensacola right up until the prison sentence. A few years ago I went to the new location in Alabama since it's not far from where I live...and it is a seriously bleak, bizarre place. It's an old dirt quarry so it looks like a bombed out desert in the middle of the pine forest. Everything built very cheaply with volunteer labor. The tour was all "Dr Hovind believes this, Dr Hovind teaches us that." I will say everyone was very friendly and welcoming, except for Kent who only wanted to tell me about my place in hell.

I can help a bit with the Methodist/ Mennonite thing. In some rural communities (I come from West Virginia, so ...) you end up going to a church in a denomination other than the one your family hails from. My folks were Methodist, but we lived in a remote area where Anabaptism was standard, so we'd go to Bretheren churches. My parents now are in a religious community shared by Bretheren, Mennonite, Amish, and assorted Bible-church folks, and I kind of appreciate it. The Amish have been deradicalizing them from their far-right fandom by getting them away from the podcasts and out to F2F community activities. Now, I don't want to vouch for our man of the hour here; I don't find him trustworthy. But his backstory sounds believable if his pocket of the midwest is like our pocket of Appalachia.

One guy (Steve, I think is his name), who is a convicted sex offender, brought a kid he was grooming to dinoland, and several folks thought the boy was dead after no one could locate him for 3 nearly years. Thankfully, he ended up being found, but had indeed been abused on the property. VERY dark stuff. I fear a Waco moment is coming. The Paulogia video shows how toxic it's gotten, as Atheists, Young Earthers, etc. all worked together to compile all of the info. Kent's awfulness has brought unlikely people together as allies. Also, I'm pretty sure he had a mini-stroke (TIA I believe it's called) during a stream. I hate the guy, but don't want him to die on camera. Also, MATT POWELL!! As the child of two scientists (a geologist and a biologist/ecologist), this video is incredibly entertaining to me. (Obviously not the parts about abuse and whatnot, that stuff is just horrifying.) And I will absolutely be copying that lovely blue eyeshadow look at some point in the future 👀😍 It looks gorgeous and the color is positively delectable, like blue raspberry cotton candy 😊

Teacher here, the BEEP thing to ensure kids/people are paying close attention. The idea is that they listen very carefully in order to catch the beep when it goes, as a result they end up, listening to his teachings very closely, and learning much more than they should be

I actually met the guy at a conference with my parents. They thought he was amazing. I remember his presentation included us making paper airplanes. Oh, and when we met him it was after he went to jail but my parents didn't even see it as a red flag. It was explained as him being persecuted for sharing the "truth"

I’m from Pensacola, I went to East Brent Baptist church there growing up. It was about five minutes away from Pensacola Christian College. I saw Ken speak at my church. I was only around 15 and I remember thinking how ridiculous he sounded. I kept looking at the people around me and they were all enthralled and seemed to agree about the Earth only being 6000 years old and how we walked with Dinosaurs. It was the craziest thing to me. I quit going to that church when I was 18 and never looked back. That church did a lot of damage to me mentally. I’m 39 now, but it’s taking many years to get to this peaceful place I’m in. Thank you for your videos! Love your perspective!

If you want a good breakdown of why the "man walked with dinosaurs" thing is b.s. Miniminuteman has a video all about it in his "Awful Archaeology" series (episode 4, Creationist Footprint Conspiracies). I think he specifically addresses the Texas ones, even.

As someone who spent years writing both my Masters and PhD theses, it makes me mad to see Hovind referring to his infantile word-vomit as a 'Doctoral dissertation'. His use of the title 'Dr' is insulting to real scholars. Another brilliant video, Jen. Thank you. You look gorgeous with that blue eye shadow, btw.

I know what the beeps are! I worked for Child Evangelism Fellowship during my summers as a teen. We taught the gospel to kids and we used a "secret word" to get the kids up and moving during long sitting periods. It helps the wiggley ones that need to move a little more. We didn't say beep though... it was more like, "When I say hula hoop," we'd whisper as to keep the secret. "I want you to stand up turn around and say, 'BRING IT AROUND TOWN' okay👍

I read "The Shack" that apparently Steven Anderson doesn't like and it was a really good read! It covers the grief this father goes through after his daughter is murdered by I believe a serial killer in the book. But yes, God is a black woman and I think comforts the dad and encourages him to ask questions about his daughter's death to get him through the grieving process if I remember correctly. I read it like 6 years ago at least so I'm not sure about every detail.

That beep thing is to keep the kids engaged while also distracting them. You wouldn't have the capacity for critical thinking if you're listening to what he's saying AND waiting for the beep to do a physical command. Kind of sick to see the practice in action
