This was my first try at reverse dyeing a sweatshirt myself. I was concerned since it is so thick that the Rit Color Remover might not work very well. Since I didn't untie it in between the color remover and the dye, I was concerned that the middle of the sweatshirt might all be black with none of the color removed. I was very pleasantly surprised during washout. I love it when that happens!

Tried the color remover on the first shirts I tied up the other day with great success! Don't love the smell but love the results. I untied mine to wash, but was going to re-tie some to try and put color on and hope the color turns out how I want it to.

This sweatshirt is so gorgeous. I have questions. Before dying, can I use Arm and Hammer washing soda instead of soda ash? Is Jacquard dye any good? And finally, how much would a shirt like this be priced for? ✌😊
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 5 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yes, it is sodium carbonate, but I'm not sure if it has any other ingredients. I haven't ever used it though so I'm not sure if you use the same amount to make your solution. The pH of your soda ash solution should be approximately 10.5. You could get some pH paper and check your solution. I haven't ever used Jacquard dye either. It is the same type of dye that I use, but I haven't used that particular brand.

Good morning Angie, I had an idea about a reverse geode t-shirt. A black shirt tied like a geode and then using bleach as like you would a die on a regular geode. And leaving it like that. But I've had problems because the bleach tears at the fabric of the T-shirt. My question is do you know of any kind of products that you could use like bleach like a liquid but not have the same damaging effects of bleach?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I've actually made a shirt like that before, but I didn't video it. It turned out looking really cool with the orange/black combination. I don't use bleach much anymore because it is so damaging to the fabric. I prefer Out White Brite laundry whitener or Rit Color Remover. For this sweatshirt I used Rit Color Remover. They both are very similar, but the Out White Brite works much faster than the Rit Color Remover. Out White Brite doesn't damage the fabric and it will get the shirt much lighter than I've been able to with bleach (it goes to a taupe color). If you aren't familiar with Out White Brite, here is a link: amzn.to/3ix1UWF Also, here is a link to a reverse geode shirt I made using the Out White Brite: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZKzf5uLp7Nkr5Y

@@FunEndeavors I've actually really been trying to experiment with different bleaches, I know that none are up to par as far as fabric being burnt up but have had some good results using a regular strengthened bleach diluted to enable the fabric to be saturated through to the center of the geode then a gel like consistency bleach to coat the outside of the fabric. Let sit for not more than an hour, washed amd dried with my sinew still on. Then untied, rinsed, washed and dried. It's held up pretty nicely, not what I'd like but decent. Idk just sharing my experience. Have a good day.

@@benjaminkiesov3459 that's great! I'm really glad that you've found a process that works really well for you. I love how versatile bleach is, but I really don't like how damaging it is. I don't use it too much any more though since I've been using Out White Brite.

Do you add anything to the dye like casoline oil or urea? Your colors seem like they're brighter than most tie-dyes.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
I do add Urea to my liquid dye, but I don't add calsolene oil. The heat is what helps me to get the bright colors. I made this sweatshirt last August, and I live where it gets really hot during the summer. I put my tie dyes on metal racks down inside of plastic containers and then place the lid on the container and put them outside to process. Inside of the plastic container they will get really hot, but they won't dry out because with the lid on the container they are in kind of a mini sauna. After leaving them in the heat (we have a heat index of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit here today) for 24 hours, the colors will turn out really vibrant.

Looks Good! 🙂👍 I too was surprised at the color saturation. Have you ever tried Dharma's Dyehouse Color Remover? It looks like it uses the same process.....🤔
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I really kept pouring the dye on trying to make sure it was well saturated. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. No, I haven't used any of Dharma's color remover. From what I've read they are chemically different, but they both remove dye.

@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
Color removers just don't work with some items. I think it has something to do with the way the item was originally dyed. It's kind of bizarre. Is your sweatshirt cotton? The color removers work best with cotton items.

I'm trying to decide what size dye to buy. Approximately how much do you use per item?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
That's kind of a tough question. It depends on the color and the method you are using (ice or liquid dye). Dharma Trading Company has some great resources available that may help. Here is a link to a group tie dye materials list. One of the paragraphs addresses how much dye to purchase. You can use that guide and scale it to match how many items you would like to dye. I tend to be fairly heavy handed with dye application and so I usually use a little more than they suggest, but that should give you a good starting point. www.dharmatrading.com/techniques/tiedye/tie-dye-materials-what-you-need-for-a-group.html

I've had difficulty with black losing it's intensity after a few days. However, most other colors will last at least a week or more if they are kept where it is cool. I know some tie dyers refrigerate them. I don't, but I keep them in a cool room and haven't had any issues. I actually used some dye that was about 3 or more weeks old on a damaged shirt just to experiment and I was amazed how vibrant it was. I was expecting the color to be more muted.

No, it's a different chemical. It removes the color, but doesn't damage the fabric the way that bleach does. It is very stinky though (bleach is too) that's why I use the color remover outside.

It turned out nicely. But you can get better results with starting on white and applying colors on one side and black on the other. You eliminate the unnecessary color remover step And multiple washes.

Thank you! You're right you can start from a white shirt and put black dye on the back. I dye shirts that way too, but I've been having fun experimenting with reverse dyeing. The reverse dyeing does give a different effect than just using black dye. It does take a bit more time to do though.
