What 5 ppl would down vote a tutorial on these shirts. This looks like i would get way to frustrated ive always been curious hoe these were made my uncle used to brag how he could tie dye so i bought some supplies and went to his house. Needless to say i wouldnt wear them if i worked solo in a lighthouse where id not be seen for 6 months at a time. Note to self just bc someone says they tie dye , has long hair and smells of incense doesn't mean they truly can. Thanks for another great video

I really like how the dye flowed on this one, the blending is lovely 🙂 I recently found a new type of shirt to try to dye, called Shaka wear. They are the heaviest weight shirt I have ever seen, their website says they are 7.5oz. That is a full ounce heavier than Carhartt work shirts. If you shop around you can find them on eBay in a 3 pack for 26$

This turned out fabulous. Do you use a fixative or is the dye just permanent now? Thanks.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
The soda ash that I soaked the sweatshirt in before I tied it along with the extra sprinkle of soda ash that I put on top of the dye is what fixes the dye to the fabric. It raises the pH and allows the dye to bond with the fabric. The sweatshirt was allowed to process in a room that was above 70 degrees for at least 24 hours too. After the Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes are put on a garment, the garment needs to be in an environment above 70 degrees Fahrenheit to get as vibrant as possible. I usually leave mine for at least 24 hours before I wash them out. After that, the dye is permanent and once the excess dye that didn't bond with the fabric is washed out completely - the garments shouldn't fade under normal conditions.

Fun Endeavors thank you so much for going to the trouble of explaining all that. I didn’t realise the temperature of the room was so important and affected the vibrancy of the colours. Very interesting, and I will bare that in mind.

I wash and dry before I prep my shirts/sweatshirts to get out any chemicals or treatments that might be left in the shirt from the manufacturing process. Those things can affect how the shirt will dye. I purchase my shirts from a wholesaler now, but before that I purchased from Jiffy Shirts. They sell a wide variety of brands and they ship really quickly.

Fun Endeavors thank you for replying. Sorry one more question. I never saw anyone use the powder?? You used. What is that and if you don’t mind. Why do you use that compare to the liquid. And again thank you for taking the time to answer my questions
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
@@michelerepko5504 I use a Procion Fiber Reactive Dye. It is a powder that I use as a powder for ice dyeing, but mix with water to make a liquid to use for liquid dyeing. I do both ice and liquid dyeing, but they yield different results. The ice dyeing gives more of a watercolor type effect. I have quite a few videos on my channel showing both techniques. Here is a link to the kind of dye that I purchase and the colors used on this sweatshirt. I've been ordering from a wholesaler, but I used to order from Jiffy Shirts. I have also ordered from Hanes, JcPenney and various other places depending on the item. I started fan folding and followed the sweatshirt all the way down to the sleeve. I fan folded the sleeve and then folded the sleeve up and over the top of the sweatshirt fan folds. This helps keep the fold a little more compact and easier to tie.

Does the fact that there's nothing on the bottom not factor into the incline?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Do you mean since it is on a rack instead of in a gutter like I normally use? I was initially concerned about that too, but it works really well rack incline dyeing. I still ended up with the dye movement that I love with an incline. I prefer to use a piece of guttering for t-shirts, but hoodies and sweatshirts are just too large to fit in the guttering.

Hi, I saw a couple of your geode designs and then found this. I really love your designs and the really strong, vibrant, designs. I love the effect of ice dye techniques but am a bit cautious about using dyes in powder form for direct application. I have had some good results with washing machine dyes and simple designs and some very good ones with direct application liquids or dye baths. We do use dye powder to make the bath, but make it outdoors, as apart from the bathroom, our only convenient source of water is the kitchen and I don't want to have any dye powder in there. In addition, I am mildly asthmatic and so dealing with powder is tricky. Do you use a face mask? I only dye very occasionally, so haven't invested in a high quality mask yet.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, I always wear a P100 respirator whenever I handle soda ash, color remover or powdered dye. The dye is fine once it is mixed with water, but I always wear a mask when I use it in powdered form. I have a couple masks, here are some links for where I purchased them: amzn.to/3MMgNls amzn.to/3MCBsbP The second one I mainly wear when I use bleach or color remover. I have a background in Chemistry and so I am cautious about protecting my lungs. I don't blame you for not wanting to have dye in your kitchen or eating area. I have a dedicated dye space, but I don't have a water source in my dye space. I do have a sink in my garage though where I mix my dye and where I can source any water that I need. I also have a freezer for storing my ice for ice dyeing. I wish I had a way to add water to the space, but it would be too costly to do so.

@@FunEndeavors Thank you very much! I thought you might, I hope you didn't mind my asking? I was quite interested in alcohol ink dyeing and realised that some people were using them for colouring epoxy "geodes" and so on, but were not taking basic precautions with masks or ventilations. One young woman was quite cavalier in one video, only to turn up a few months(!) later with serious breathing difficulties.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
@@charleshayes2528 No, I don't mind you asking at all. I periodically mention that I wear a respirator in my videos, but I probably should mention it more often. You're right though, some of the tie dyers don't wear one or see a need to. I also wear gloves every time I handle soda ash too - it really dries my hands out if I don't. If you ever see me tying a shirt without gloves - you can assume that it isn't soaked in soda ash yet.
@charleshayes2528
@charleshayes2528 2 жыл бұрын
@@FunEndeavors Hi, Thank again. I appreciate it. I only use this account for youtube, it saves clogging up my main email with even more stuff that I forget to read. So I apologise for not replying sooner. I have had few problems with soda ash, but I haven't used a method that requires it recently. I haven't done direct application (with squirty bottle kits) for ages and the most recent bucket/long immersion dye was a commercial type called Dylon that only requires salt. If we use the washing machine version, then it doesn't even need that. I am sorry I can't show you any of my recent attempts. I don't know if you are familiar with Melanie Brummer and her book "Contemporary Dyecraft", but many of the designs I use come from her or are variations on her work. Of course, her results are much better than mine because she is really precise about her preparations, her dye mixes and timings. We just twist it, fold it and or knot it and bung it in the washing machine. Except one got undone and we had to try again in a less violent dyebath! No need to reply to this one. All the best.
