This tutorial video is a comparison experiment to see if there is a difference between using Aluminum foil vs. baseball and softball size wiffle balls to make TDS (tall deep scrunches) on an ice dyed shirt. I also tried Happy Cat Tie Dye's Dragon Egg dye for the first time, and it is gorgeous!

I actually like the aluminum ball shirt the best, Angie. The dye can't flow through the aluminum, like the wiffle balls, so you get the different outcome. Interesting experiment. The color is gorgeous, btw. Thanks for sharing.

What a great idea. Thank you for doing a comparison video. I think I like the foil a little better. Colors are beautiful. Dragon's egg is amazing. Looks like Hawaiian flowers to me. Thanks again.

Thank you, Allen! I really like the way the dye flowed on the foil balls too, and they do look like Hawaiian flowers.

Thanks for doing these experiments! I don't have a huge budget for "try"-dying right now, and limited supplies. Having these videos available is so helpful, and yours are the best I've come across.

I've mixed foil and baseball sized wiffle balls on the same shirt it came out pretty cool. I also just got dragon egg , I can't wait to play with it. Great video I love your channel ❤️

I really like the jagged edgy look on the front of the shirt with the aluminum foil. I can see some of it on the wiffle ball shirts, but it's more pronounced on the aluminum foil.

I love your experiments - I find them so helpful. I absolutely LOVE the dye color - and each of the techniques produces a fun different result - I like them all, but I think the softball wiffle is my favorite - looks like big watercolor flowers.

This color is absolutely gorgeous with the splits!! I do enjoy watching your experiments videos. They help me determine which technique is best for me. I've used the wiffle balls but I think I will need to try the foil. And yes, this color! Beautiful!

I like the foil one best. I'm not inclined to use foil, though. I have lots of baseball and softball sized whiffle balls and they can be reused easier. I am saving toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes to use in an experiment, I think I'll wrap them in plastic wrap or foil to hold their structure in the process. Feel free to grab that idea and experiment. I'd love to see what you come up with.

This was my first time using foil too, and I do love the flow. Using toilet paper tubes sounds intriguing. I can't wait to see what you come up with. 😀

First, I love all three, but I think I like the aluminum foil one best, probably for what Crystal says, the foil doesn't let the water through so it flows better? But I'm not likely to use foil, I'll be thinking about it, maybe just small solid balls? Hmm... Also, I like the smaller balls because there's more ball design. I like the wispyiness. I've got my basket filled at Happy Cat, looks like I'm going to have to get a LARGER amount of Dragon Egg, beautiful color. Do you think you have too much dye, that's why it's not dissolving? Or, less would make it not as bright or colorful? Overall, not a lot of difference. Thanks for the experiment!!! 🥰🥰🥰

Thank you, Patti! I like the wispiness of the aluminum foil too. I probably could've added less dye and that would've helped with the dye not dissolving. I also could've added a little more ice on each shirt and that would've helped too. Unfortunately, the plastic baskets weren't deep enough to add more ice without making a mess.

Great video! Thank you. I'm wondering if anyone has tried wrapping wiffle balls in aluminum foil to save on the amount of foil needed for this technique. If so, how were the results?

Do you find that by soaking the shirts, any white of the shirt gets dyed? And if not, HOW!?!? This is probably my biggest problem with dying, all the color bleeding.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors Жыл бұрын
No, I don't have trouble with the color bleeding when I soak the shirts during washout. If you're having that issue, the best thing to do is to start by rinsing really well in cold water. The cold water will rinse out the soda ash and once it is out of your shirt, it won't be as easy for the dye to bond with the fabric. Be sure and use cold water though - not hot. The fiber reactive dye needs a raised pH (the soda ash) and heat to bond with the fabric. If you rinse initially in hot water, you are rinsing unbonded dye and soda ash out of the shirt at the same time and you can stain the white areas of your shirt by bonding bits of dye onto the white areas. Only when you've rinsed the shirt really well in cold water should you warm the water to hot and rinse in hot water to rinse out the excess unbonded dye. I also add a little blue Dawn dish soap to my soaking water. Blue Dawn is pH neutral and will help keep the water pH neutral and not encourage dye bonding. When I wash my shirts in hot water in the washing machine I add some Dharma's Professional Textile Detergent which is also pH neutral and it helps keep unbonded dye that might get rinsed out from re-bonding with the fabric.
