Tie-Dye Design: Reverse Dyed Mandala Tie Dye Shirt [Using Out White Brite]

In this video I show and explain the entire process that I used to tie a mandala on a black shirt and then remove the color using Out White Brite Laundry Whitener. Followed by the dyeing process. The dyeing process didn't go exactly like I planned for this shirt. I had some issues getting the dye to properly soak into the shirt. I decided to post the video though and show how a tie dye that didn't go as planned can still end up looking really cool.

Thank You….. sooooo much for posting. Seeing/hearing you say this was a challenge has helped me remember everyone has projects that just don’t go as easy as others, even though we have done it hundreds of times …. A video on “fixing” shirts we hate would be awesome…. Thanks for great videos.

Looks great I had a similar issue with a shirt not taking an ice dye yesterday ended up using a hot soda ash solution on the end that wouldn’t take any dye past the first layer of cloth after applying new dye and ice three times so half the shirt is pastel and half is full brightness of colors actually looked kinda cool sometimes completely dry shirt just refuse to dye the way you want🤪

Like the fanfold idea, I've never tried that on the mandala part - neat! Really thick fold for sure! Going to have to play with Out White more, so far mixed results lol but it doesn't fall apart like bleach and others are having terrific results so it must just be my process. I wonder what was making the shirt resist the dye so much... I think it came out awesome!
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I really love the Out White Brite. It works very fast to remove the color. The only downside I've found is that it is sometimes tough to not remove too much color. I love the versatility of bleach and how you can use it to remove color from very specific areas, but I really hate the damage that it causes. I also haven't ever been able to get a shirt past the orange stage using bleach without damaging the fabric. The Out White Brite and even the Rit Color Remover do really well to get the shirt some shade of taupe. The problem with the dye not soaking in was my soda ash solution. Every shirt that I soaked in that batch of soda ash solution had that problem (reverse dyed ones and just plain white shirts too). Unfortunately, I soaked quite a few at the same time before I realized there was an issue. Once I did, I dumped it and mixed more. I haven't had an issue since. I don't know whether the soda ash solution was too concentrated, the soda ash wasn't dissolved properly or whether it was a problem with the water I used (I use tap water to mix soda ash solution).

I like the way it turned out. I was wondering why this batch was such a pain? Was it possibly because of the Out Whitener? I want to do some reverse ones but if it makes it difficult I don't want to use it.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! No, it wasn't the Out White Brite, but instead it was my soda ash solution. All of the shirts that I soaked in my soda ash solution that I was using at the time had issues accepting the dye (both regular and reverse dyed shirts). I ended up lightly spraying them with some additional soda ash solution and they soaked up the dye, but this one didn't cooperate quite as well. The mandala portion did fine, but the top portion of the shirt that was tied tightly with sinew didn't. I believe that was partly due to the fact that there was probably quite a bit of wax residue on the shirt from the sinew. When I pour the boiling water over the shirt to remove the color, sometimes a bit of the wax coating on the sinew melts. Normally it doesn't cause any issues, but I really wrapped the top portion of this shirt with a lot of sinew. Looking back, I should have untied the top portion before I washed it in the washing machine and I don't think I would have had as many issues. I usually leave the shirts tied and this is the first one that I've had this problem with. I wouldn't hesitate to use the Out White Brite - it's a great product and it isn't the Out that cause the problems with this shirt.

Are you using gildan shirts? They’ve been having a quality control issue where their 100% cotton shirts are cut with polyester. You can hold them up to the light and see the lines. If you’re having that issue try giving them a call

I had some trouble recently with my dye not wanting to soak in also. They were shirts that I had tied and let dry for probably a week before I applied the dye. I spritzed on some SA water and it helped a bit, but a lot of the dye was just running off the shirt. I ended up putting the shirts in a tub with about an inch or so of SA water. That was a big mistake as the saturation was really sparse. I won’t do that again!
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
That's very frustrating when that happens. I dye my items dry most of the time and I rarely have an issue. However, the batch of soda ash solution that I soaked this shirt in was probably off - either too concentrated or the soda ash wasn't fully dissolved properly. It also could have been something with the water that I used since I just used tap water for the soda ash solution. Literally every shirt that I soaked in the solution that I soaked this one in had the issue with repelling the dye. After I realized the problem, I dumped it and mixed up some new soda ash solution and I haven't had an issue since. Unfortunately, I had soaked quite a few shirts before I realized the problem.

Angie, I’m at a crossroads. I used Out on a KISS shirt and it did great removing the black from the shirt. I saw GOYO dye some shirts in the leftover muck and thought about dropping the shirt into some muck from a project a couple days ago. Have you tried this? Will it be a waste? I mandala tied the back and sleeves and scrunched the rest. I’d hate to screw up a cool limited edition shirt, what do you think? ✌🏻❤️
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen GOYO's video, but I personally wouldn't risk putting your shirt in the muck. I know some tie dyers put shirts that are tied underneath shirts that they are ice dyeing to allow the dye to drip onto the shirt and the shirt to process in the muck from the shirt above. I think that works well - I've made socks that way before. The muck isn't old and the dye is still active when it hits the shirt underneath. However, if you the muck is older and has been sitting for awhile - I wouldn't re-use it. Once the dye runs through the soda ash from the shirt, it will start reacting. Therefore, if the muck has been sitting it won't be strong enough to make the shirt very vibrant. It will probably still dye the shirt, but my guess is that it will be more pastel or muted. I wouldn't risk it for a shirt that is a limited edition.
